Haec Dies - William Byrd [1540 - 1623]

This motet is from the Missale Romanum and is the Gradual after the Epistle and before the Sequence Victimae Paschali. It was composed for 6 voices (SSATTB)for the Traditional Tridentine Mass. Byrds' composition shares much in common with Palestrina. Both employ 6 voices; both are essentially jubilant in character; and both have rhythmic pattern duple for the words "Haec dies quam fecit Dominus" and for the final "Alleluia" section, triple for the middle section "exultemus et laetemur in ea". Byrd expresses his joy in this piece through polyphony, the voices engaging in subtle cross-rhythms. Latin: Haec dies quam fecit Dominus; exultemus et laetemur in ea. Alleluia. English translation: This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia.

In resurrectione tua - William Byrd (1540 - 1623) Latin text with English translation

In resurectione tua (no. 17 in the original print). The shortest of the 1589 Cantiones, this sets an Easter text from the Sarum rite. The voices vie with each other in lively rhythms, and twice the word "Alleluia" breaks in, in a way which foreshadows many of the Gradualia motets.

Rome Total War Online Battle #1623: Rome (10k) vs Gaul (15k)

I command the 10k army of Rome. My opponent, Pffft (aka "Belle"), commands the 15k army of Gaul. MISCELLANEOUS - My opponent was the host. She set up the battle where I used the Romans at 10k. She would get to use Gaul at 15k. - My opponent contacted me and told me they were unaware that leaving the game would terminate it like that. So there were no poor intentions from my opponent. A very friendly opponent to be sure.

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) Pensées

www.philosophybites.com oregonstate.edu There are two kinds of argument for theism. Traditional, epistemic arguments hold that God exists; examples include arguments from cosmology, design, ontology, and experience. Modern, pragmatic arguments hold that, regardless of whether God exists, believing in God is good for us, or is the right thing to do; examples include William James's will to believe and Blaise Pascal's wager. Pascal — French philosopher, scientist, mathematician and probability theorist (1623-1662) — argues that if we don't know whether God exists then we should play it safe rather than risk being sorry. The argument comes in three versions (Hacking 1972), all of them employing decision theory. Some acknowledge that Pascal's wager cannot decide among religions, yet maintain that "it at least gets us to theism" (Jordan 1994b, Armour-Garb 1999). The idea is that Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Moslems, and devil-worshippers can all legitimately use decision theory to conclude that it's best to believe in some supreme being. Against this there are two objections. First, it disregards theological possibilities such as the Professor's God. The Professor's God rewards those who humbly remain skeptical in the absence of evidence, and punishes those who adopt theism on the basis of self-interest (Martin 1975, 1990; Mackie 1982). Second, the claim that Pascal's wager yields generic theism assumes that all religions are theistic. But consider the following sort of ...

STALKER Builds 1610, 1616, 1623, 1629 and 1632 (2003)

I'm not saying this video will make you a dapper dashing babe magnet like Fredy, but I am insinuating it. Build 1610 (November 27th, 2003) offers a first glimpse into the gaping maw of the ChAES Reactor Four sarcophagus. It is dark, and Marked One is likely to be eaten by a crashtodesktop. Build 1616 (December 3rd, 2003) contains two ragdoll test maps, one old and one new. Build 1623 (December 10th, 2003) is billed as a particle effects demo, but in fact pits an unarmed Marked One against a savage bloodsucker. Build 1629 (December 16th, 2003) gives Marked One his chance for revenge. Build 1632 (December 19th, 2003) is a comparatively tranquil tour of Army Warehouses, showing off the first steps towards dynamic, interactive NPCs, followed by a plunge back into the sarcophagus. Lots of griping about these builds at www.tinyurl.com (Music and sound effects are MoozE's Ambiance #1 from SoC, Duty Radio / Cossacks themes from CS, combat track #2 from CoP, the Wilhelm scream, the Windows XP Critical Stop, and the Old Spice classic whistle.)

William Byrd (1540-1623) - Pavan & Galliard

This episode features music from lutenist and composer John Dowland. Dowland wrote the Lachrimae Pavane, known in English as Flow My Tears, in 1596, and it is now one of the most widely known pieces of the English Renaissance. Lachrimae became the composers signature song literally as well as metaphorically: later in life he would occasionally sign his name Jo. Dolandi de Lachrimae or John Dowland of the Lachrimae. Here well hear music of one of Dowlands contemporaries, William Byrd: a Pavan and Galliard played by Charles Metz on the virginal. This instrument is closely related to the harpsichord, but the strings run parallel to the keyboard instead of perpendicular to it. Because of this orientation, the virginals strings are plucked closer to the middle than the harpsichord, which gives the instrument a richer, fuller sound.ArsAntiguaPresents.com, directed by Jerry Fuller, is a series free video web cast programs of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical eras performed on period instruments.Video production by Phillip W. Max! Nooo El cor de la ciutat ep 1623

Translations by michellepe89 & YGwanwyn Gracias! Clara: Okay don't get mad, that's the last thing I need... Max: How do you expect me not to get mad? You spend the night in the hospital and you don't let me know until this morning Sergi: Your mother wanted to call you, but I told her it was better not to worry you until we knew something for sure. Max: Oh thanks... Clara: I'm sure it won't be anything. All of the tests that they've done to me until now rule out that it's anything with my heart. The doctors say it was probably just an anxiety attack. Max: When are they going to let you leave? Clara: They want to do a stress test on me and have me monitored another day. If everything goes okay, they'll discharge me tomorrow. Max: It's not a problem for her to stay here? Can they guarantee her safety? Sergi: All of the entrances to the hospital are protected...and there's surveillance 24 hours a day at the door of the room. Clara: The nurses must think that I'm from the mafia, or worse Max: That's good, then they'll treat you like a queen Sergi: One thing, Max...you should tell the people from the neighborhood not to come and visit Max: It seems Beni wanted to come later... Sergi: He better not. The way things are right now, the fewer people that come and go from the room, the better. Max: Does that include me? Sergi: Just think that we'll definitely be at home tomorrow Clara: Didn't you tell me that you had to go to the university to look for your grades? Max: Yeah, but I ...

Hark all ye lovely saints above - Thomas Weelkes (1576 - 1623) "subtitles" included

This is a fine example of Elizabethan secular music by Weelkes, who along with others - Morely, Wilbye, Bennet, Tomkins et al. wrote for the court of Elizabeth 1. The text of the madrigal is sung by soloists and then repeated by a choral flourish finally ending as many Madrigals did of the era with a series of fa la la la's!

Civitas sancti tui - William Byrd (1543 - 1623) Latin text with English transliteration

This motet was widely sung in Elizabethan recusant circles, as the seven surviving manuscript sources show. It provided a model for Byrds famous Civitas sancti tui (Ne irascaris Domine Part II). One factor in its popularity was undoubtedly its text, a responsory from the Roman and Sarum Breviaries which was sung during the weeks before Advent. (Behold, Lord, for the city once full of riches is made desolate, she who ruled the peoples sits in sadness: there is none to console her but thou, our God. (2) She wept sorely in the night, and her tears were on her cheeks: there is none to console her but thou, our God). Texts of this type (which also feature widely in Byrds penitential and political motets of the 1590s) were widely read by the Elizabethan recusant community in contemporary terms as expressions of Catholic nostalgia for the old religious order. The Non est qui consoletur canon was probably widely sung in recusant circles with the same connotations. Although this version has not survived in written form, the canon subject was simple enough to have been memorized and transmitted orally.

From "Carols for Quire 2": Quire Cleveland, conducted by Ross W. Duffin, performing at Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland OH, December 3-4, 2010. Subtitled "A Carroll for Christmas Day" from his "Psalmes, Songs, and Sonnets" of 1611. In keeping with Byrd's Catholic background in Protestant England, the text is a translation of the antiphon to the Magnificat for the Second Vespers of the Nativity. However, rather than sounding like a stately motet, it is instead in a full madrigalian style, with angelic voices entwining, and thrilling alleluias.

Tu es Petrus - William Byrd [1540 - 1623]

This composition by Byrd is from his "Gradualia" Book 2 from 1607. Tu es Petrus affords a fine example of Byrd's contrapuntal ingenuity and of his musical "word-painting." In the phrase "et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam", the word "petram" - (rock) is frequently set to notes of long duration as a pedal-point, whilst others sing above it an ascending phrase, symbolical of the words "aedificabo ecclesiam meam" (I will build my church). In the Missale Romanum Tu es Petrum is often set as the Gradual or the Tract before the reading of the Holy Gospel. It is interesting to note that Byrd does no include the entire text. [Byrd did not set the words enclosed in square brackets below, but added Alleluia.] Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam; [et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam. Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum.] Thou are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church [and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of heaven.]
