An animation of a 10-barrel .45 cal 1874 Gatling gun, with 240 round Broadwell magazine. This gun was sometimes called the Camel gun, after some imaginative advertising. Earlier models of Gatling gun were heavy and difficult to transport across rough terrain. In 1872, Gatling patented a shorter lock design, which allowed a shorter and lighter firing mechanism, and with short barrels, a light Gatling could be transported by infantry and mounted on a tripod (or a Camel!). The firing pin of the lock runs through the lock ending with a knob. As the gun turns, a lug at the base of each lock runs in a racetrack which drives it forwards and pulls it backwards. Just short of the firing point, the firing pin knob is captured in a groove, so that as the lock continues forwards, the firing pin is held back and compresses the firing spring. Le Api (The Bees) (1874) is as much a character study of the performer as it is of bees. Considered virtually unplayable because of its daring writing, this oboe piece can only be performed by a virtuoso that has mastered the skill of circular breathing (storing air in the mouth to keep the sound going while taking quick breathes through the nose). Pasculli is considered "the Paganini of the oboe" and Le Api was written as one of three virtuosic studies for the oboe, composed before Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble Bee. Performed on xylophone this afternoon, Le Api serves as a light, yet showy finish. Program Note by Justin R. Stolarik

Wilhelm Richard Wagner ( /ˈvɑːɡnər/; German pronunciation: [ˈʁiçaʁt ˈvaːɡnɐ]; 22 May 1813 -- 13 February 1883) was a German composer, conductor, theatre director and essayist, primarily known for his operas (or "music dramas", as they were later called). Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex texture, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs: musical themes associated with individual characters, places, ideas or plot elements. Unlike most other opera composers, Wagner wrote both the music and libretto for every one of his stage works.

Josef Lhévinne was one of the finest pianists in history. Sadly only a handful of recordings exist of his playing. His technique was immense and his art suave and masterly. This is a recording of Chopin's Etude in G sharp minor op.10 no.6 from 1935.

The Road Not Taken TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost (18741963). Part 3: www.youtube.com Four part music history series originally broadcast by Channel 4 in the UK, Autumn 2002. Composer Howard Goodall links great pieces of music to the era in which they were written in a bid to prove that time, place, culture and politics had more of a part to play in the end product than the genius of the producer. He begins with a historical look at 1874, the year which saw the completion of Wagner's influential Ring cycle. As always, should these become commercially available i will remove them immediatly. If you enjoy this series please purchase the DVD to support the production of any future work.

The 1934 RKO Radio Pictures adaptation of W. Somerset Maughams Of Human Bondage, directed by John Cromwell and starring Leslie Howard in the leading role, is a part of Hollywood history because it afforded Bette Davis the opportunity to establish her superiority as an actress and star and yet subsequently failed to earn her an Academy Award nomination despite thunderous critical acclaim and commercial success. The saga that ensued—the battle to be cast, Jack Warners discouragement of her nomination, the allowance of write-in ballots, her failure to subsequently win—would end in Miss Davis receiving an Academy Award for Best Actress for Dangerous, an honor which she considered a very obvious consolation prize for the Academys failure to recognize her work in Of Human Bondage. Amidst such a scandalous turn of events, it becomes easier to overlook what an incredible performance was at the root of such controversy. And, more than 75 years later, Mildred remains one of Bette Daviss most vivid and brilliant film characterizations. For years this film has been widely available but in low-quality public domain versions that rarely look any better than a second-generation VHS tape. However, in 1999 a DVD of the film was released in a beautifully restored and remastered version by an independent entertainment company that was trying its hand at early talkies on DVD after having great success with European horror films in the laserdisc market. Much to the chagrin of film fans ...

After Horowitz'American debut in Carnegie Hall performing the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto in 1928, Rachmaninoff told him, "You may be the loudest and the fastest but I must tell you that it was not musical." (See page 112, Horowitz, by Glenn Plaskin). It was this kind of criticism that Lhevinne abhorred. When in 1970 RCA re-released the Lhevinne recordings, Edmund Morris wrote," Gifted with a technical equipment so massive that even Horowitz admired it,Lhevinne spent his life refining away its 'interference' in his art. He steadily reduced the frequency of his concert appearances, and seemed happiest when puttering with a telescope in his private observatory." Here in the Schumann -Liszt Fruhlingsnacht his "massive technical equipment" comes into perfect confluence with the music.

Lénore, poème symphonique d'après Bürger (1874-75) A symphonic poem by French composer Henri Duparc (1848-1933), based on the famous 1773 Gothic ballad "Lenore" by Gottfried August Bürger, which is considered a foundational work in the development of Romantic literature. The following synopsis of "Lenore" is taken from Wikipedia: Although the Battle of Prague is over, William, the fiancé of a young woman named Lenore, has not returned from the Seven Years' War yet. Since he moved into to battle along with King Frederick, Lenore impatiently worries about William every day and longs for his return, but has not heard any news from him. When the other warriors return from the war without William, she begins to quarrel with God, complaining about His unfairness and proclaiming that He has never done her any good, which prompts her mother to ask for her daughter's forgiveness because she knows that such a thought is blasphemous and will condemn her to Hell. Lenore's mother also suggests that William probably found another woman in Hungary, and that Lenore should forget him. At midnight, a mysterious stranger who looks like William knocks on the door searching for Lenore and asks her to accompany him on horseback to their marriage bed. Lenore happily gets on the stranger's black steed and the two ride at a frenetic pace, under the moonlight, along a path filled with eerie landscapes. Terrorised, Lenore demands to know why they are riding so fast, to which he responds that they ...

Orchestra di Mandolini e Chitarre Città di Brescia www.mandolinobrixia.it Direttore Claudio Mandonico. "Madrigale" di Eugenio Giudici [1874-1949]-Bergamo (Italy) per Mandoloncello e Orchestra. Solista Raffaele La Ragione. Composer Eugenio Giudici (Bergamo 1864 -- 1949), student at the Istituto Donizetti (A. Cagnoni, E. Pizzi and A. Marinelli) took the diploma in composition in Bologna. He soon devoted himself to the band tradition and accepted positions as a bandmaster in several provinces, directing the Musical Institute of Badia Polesine for some time. Back in Bergamo, he became director of the "Estudiantina Bergamasca" until his death. Nearly neglected today, like Tarenghi he devoted his composition activity to instrumental music his works reveal a deep timbre knowledge and great originality. His "Concert for saxophone and orchestra" was the first one ever written in Italy, while in "Notturno Lagunare" he included an ensemble of mandolins and guitars in the symphonic orchestra. The "Scherzo per mandolino e pianoforte" bears the dedication to G. Lucca, who was teacher at Istituto Donizetti at that time. Spread the word of true greatness. Forward to a friend. Day of Sorrow Sir Winston Churchill 1874 - 1965 I Vow To Thee My Country - Gustav Holst Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS (30 November 1874 -- 24 January 1965) was a British politician and statesman known for his leadership of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. He is widely regarded as one of the great wartime leaders. He served as Prime Minister twice (1940--45 and 1951--55). A noted statesman and orator, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and an artist. To date, he is the only British prime minister to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and he was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States.[1] Churchill was born into the aristocratic family of the Dukes of Marlborough. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jenny Jerome, an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Sudan and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and through books he wrote about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before World War I, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of the Asquith Liberal government.
