Frankenstein (1910) - Full Movie

Frankenstein is a 1910 film made by Edison Studios that was written and directed by J. Searle Dawley. It was the first motion picture adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The unbilled cast included Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein, Charles Ogle as the Monster, and Mary Fuller as the doctor's fiancée. Shot in three days, it was filmed at the Edison Studios in the Bronx, New York City. Although some sources credit Thomas Edison as the producer, he in fact played no direct part in the activities of the motion picture company that bore his name. Frankenstein is in the public domain, and you can download it here for free: www.archive.org

Making Christmas Crackers (1910)

After a businesslike introduction to the manufacture of crackers (did you know the cardboard centres were called tum-tums?), this appealing short suddenly switches tone, as a festive family prances around a Christmas tree and pulls a gigantic cracker. But what - or who - lurks within? The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (1910)

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910) is the earliest surviving film version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, made by the Selig Polyscope Company without Baum's direct input. It was created to fulfill a contractual obligation associated with Baum's personal bankruptcy caused by The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays, from which it was once thought to have been derived. It was partly based on the 1902 stage musical, though much of the film deals with the Wicked Witch of the West, who does not appear in the musical. Tenement Life 1860-1910

Squalid NYC Tenements... How some of my ancestors lived after arriving in New York in the late 1800s from Ireland. I made this slideshow from pictures in the archives of the NYC Dept of Tenement houses, from various Manhattan street scene photographs, and photos taken by pioneers like Jacob Riis who fought for better sanitary conditions among New York's poor. At the end is a 1-minute clip of one of the first motion pictures shot in NYC in 1903 by Thomas Edison, which shows a scene in the lower east side at the turn of the century titled "Move On" The music is from the soundtrack of "The Assassination of Jesse James"

The Acrobatic Fly (1910)

Propped upon the tail-end of a match, a housefly performs astonishing feats, alternately juggling a series of objects - a blade of grass, a cork, a miniature dumbbell... Most extraordinary of all is the sequence in which the fly spins a ball twice its own size, while a second fly perches on top. In the final sequence, the fly repeats some of its earlier tricks while apparently seated on a tiny chair. This truly delightful (or singularly repellent) film is the work of Percy Smith, pioneer of a particularly engaging early form of natural filmmaking. 'The Acrobatic Fly' is one of a series of Smith films on similar subjects around this time, and near identical to, though briefer than, a sequence in his 1911 release 'The Strength and Agility of Insects', which also features similarly impressive accomplishments by a scorpion, a flea, a grasshopper and a praying mantis. Viewers might worry about the techniques used to secure such performances, but Smith always insisted that his stars were none the worse for their moment in the spotlight. (Mark Duguid) For more information about filmmaker Percy Smith see www.screenonline.org.uk You can watch almost 1000 other complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive free of charge at the new BFI Mediatheque - www.bfi.org.uk

Henri Coanda First Jet Engine

The Coandă-1910 was the first jet-propelled aircraft ever built. It was constructed by Romanian inventor Henri Coandă and exhibited by him at the Second International Aeronautical Exhibition in Paris around October 1910. Unfortunately during a ground test of the engine on December 16, 1910, Coandă was caught unaware by the power of the engine and found himself briefly airborne. He lost control of the machine, and it crashed, burning, to the ground. Coandă was thrown clear of the crash. Between 1911 and 1914, he worked as technical director of Bristol Aeroplane Company in the UK, where he designed several airplanes known as Bristol-Coandă airplanes. In 1915, he went again to France where, working during World War I for Delaunay-Belleville in Saint-Denis, he designed and built three different models of propeller airplane, including the Coandă-1916, with two propellers mounted close to the tail; this design was to be reprised in the "Caravelle" transport airplane, for which Coandă was a technical consultant. He invented a new decorative material for use in construction, beton-bois; one prominent example of its use is the 1926 Palace of Culture, in Iaşi. 1926: Working in Romania, Coandă developed a device to detect liquids under ground, useful in petroleum prospecting. Shortly thereafter, in the Persian Gulf region, he designed a system for offshore oil drilling. Probably the most famous of Coandă's discoveries is the Coandă Effect. Beauty through the Decades: 1910-1920 Hairstyle

READ ME!!! This was a sort of limbo decade between the flapper era of the 1920s and the soft, Edwardian era of the 1900s. Many women were still sporting the big, soft, Gibson Girl hairstyles on a day to day basis, however many women were also cutting their hair short, and styling it in fun finger waves as well, especially after the start of World War I. With the introduction of the war in 1914, women found themselves taking over their husbands' duties as well as their own priorities, and didn't have the time to form big, poofy Gibson Girl hairstyles anymore. Many women switched this style with a short bob, and stylish finger waves or some other kind of slicked back curl. I mix the two in this video to represent the split in this era: the Gibson Girl was still widely popular, but the short, bobbed finger waves were just starting to emerge. Sorry for the lighting, I did this when the sun was just starting to set, so it may look a little washed out and blue. Beauty through the Decades: 1900-1910 Hairstyle

READ ME!! At the beginning of the last century, there were no movies or television, or even radio. Advertisements and style came directly from newspapers and cartoons. One cartoonist, Charles Dana Gibson, gave life to his perfect woman: a Gibson Girl was spunky and sentimental, down to Earth and aristocratic at the same time. She was very lady like, but she was allowed to get her hands dirty as well. His cartoon Gibson Girls sparked a fashion revolution, and every woman around the country found herself yearning to be a Gibson Girl. The Gibson Girl was the Pin-Up Girl of the 1900s, and she stayed that way until World War 1.
