There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this, yes, for those who were wondering, and I did mix the two together. In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin. The Warsaw Uprising, was a struggle of the Polish underground which, between August 1, 1944 and October 2, 1944, conducted an armed struggle aimed at liberating Warsaw and its 1000000 inhabitants from the German occupation at the time the Soviet army was approaching the city limits from the east. As the city fought desperately and the Germans began to bring in reinforcements, the reaction of the Soviets was silence. Soviet forces, which had advanced confidently throughout the summer, stopped within miles of Warsaw. Some equipment and ammunition was dropped by the Allies, but this was largely ineffective. Since British and American planes werent allowed to land at Soviet air bases a few kilometers away, they were forced to fly from Italy and back, carrying only half their potential load, and dropping it largely into enemy hands. The airlifts were quickly abandoned, and the Poles were left alone to defend their capital. German forces introduced new types of weapons into Warsaw: Karl Morser heavy mortar, Wufrrehmen incendiary rockets, and Goliath, a remote-controlled vehicle mine. These weapons will play a crucial role in the German offensive: isolated areas were bombarded non-stop by planes, heavy artillery and rockets, then Goliaths and tanks are sent in, followed by the infantry. In this film, made during the Second World War by the Ministry of Information, a group of West Indians, led by Una Marson and Learie Constantine, assemble at Broadcasting House in London. They describe to listeners of a popular BBC radio series, 'Calling the West Indies', how people from the Caribbean are supporting the war effort. Constantine speaks about factory workers, and introduces some war-workers, including Ulric Cross, a bomber navigator from Trinidad. Cross tells of his work in the RAF and Carlton Fairweather introduces a film about lumbermen from British Honduras. The film ends with a dance in the BBC studio. RARE OLDIES VIDEO WITH THE FAMOUS SHORT FILM " JAMMIN' THE BLUES " !!! Jammin' the Blues is a 1944 short film in which several prominent jazz musicians got together for a rare filmed jam session. It featured Lester Young, Red Callender, Harry Edison, Marlowe Morris, Sid Catlett, Barney Kessel, Jo Jones, John Simmons, Illinois Jacquet, Marie Bryant, Archie Savage and Garland Finney. Barney Kessel is the only white performer in the film. He was seated in the shadows to shade his skin, and for closeups, his hands were stained with berry juice. The movie was directed by Gjon Mili. Producer Gordon Hollingshead was nominated for an Academy Award for this footage in the category of Best Short Subject, One-reel. In 1995, Jammin' the Blues was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Adam Aston (Adolf Loewensohn) was one of three or four most popular pre-war "crooners" in Poland. His performances of the Polish as well as international hits, called in Poland with the German word, the "schlagers" - remained on Odeon, Columbia or Syrena-Electro records as masterpieces of the singing art - dramatic, strong, and sung with his stunning Jewish cantor-like tenor/baritone entirely free from any sentimental manner of the era. When in September 1939 Nazi troops invaded Poland and WWII broke out, that king of Polish "Tin Pan Alley business" managed to flee to Eastern part of Poland - in the meanwhile taken by Soviet army, who, according to Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, attacked Poland from the east as the Hitler's loyaliest ally. In those gloomy days Aston followed the way of millions of Polish citizens living there: hundreds of thousands were killed, hundreds of thousands - deported by the Soviets into deep Russia. Yet, he managed to survive again through this Polish Apocalypse and, as soon as the Nazis attacked Russia in June 1942, he joined the Polish army being formed by General Władysław Anders -- according to the quickly made pact Sikorski-Stalin -- from those of Polish officers and soldiers, who survived the Stalinist labor camps or were not massacred in Katyn -- the place of the XXth Century Polish Apocalypse in Russia. Igor Stravinsky, Elegy for solo viola (1944) Played flawlessly by Miles Hoffman. (His channel is MilesHoffmanViola) This short 5-minute work remains to be Stravinsky's only contribution to viola literature. It has been said that world renowned violist William Primrose once proposed commissioning a viola concerto from Stravinsky, but Stravinsky was not interested in the project, so he went to Bartok instead who did agree to the offer. The Elegy was commissioned by Germain Prevost to honor the memory of Alphonse Onnou (1893-1940). Prevost, who was an extremely sentimental man, not only commissioned Stravinsky for this work, but also his friend Darius Milhaud, who wrote three works for viola and piano in memory of Onnou as well. Undoubtedly in the war torn year of 1944, in which this work was composed, there were many victims worthy of this somber token of remembrance. Thank you for 45000 views!
