Nuclear Detonation Timeline "1945-1998"

The 2053 nuclear tests and explosions that took place between 1945 and 1998 are plotted visually and audibly on a world map. As the video starts out detonations are few and far between. The first three detonations represent the Manhattan Project and the two bombs that ended World War II. After a few representative minutes the USSR and Britain enter the nuclear club and the testing really starts to heat up. Even though the video does not differentiate between sub-critical "safety" tests and full detonations, you get a good idea of the fever of the nuclear arms race. The time line does not extent to tests by North Korea (October 2006 and May 2009). video credit: goes to Isao Hashimoto (www.ctbto.org/specials/1945-1998-by-isao-hashimoto/) The video was cleaned up, re-sized and edited to fit You tube's 10min limit by the folks at Bit of Fun

Soviet Victory Parade of 1945 [Part I]

Moscow Victory Parade of 1945 was a victory parade held after the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War. It took place in the Soviet capital of Moscow, mostly centering around a military parade through Red Square. The parade took place on a rainy June 24, 1945, over a month after May 9th, the day of Germany's surrender to Soviet commanders. Marshals Georgy Zhukov, who had formally accepted the German surrender to the Soviet Union, and Konstantin Rokossovsky, rode through the parade ground on white and black stallions, respectively. The fact is commemorated by the equestrian statue of Zhukov in front of the State Historical Museum, on Manege Square. The Premier of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin stood atop of Lenin's Mausoleum and watched the parade. Displays of the Red Army aircraft and vehicles were some of the focal points of the ceremony. One of the most famous moments at the end of the troops parade took place when various Red Army soldiers carried the banners of Nazi Germany and threw them down next to the Mausoleum. One of the standards that were tossed down belonged to the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Hitler's personal bodyguard raised to divisional size.

we waited until the blast had passed, walked out of the shelter and then it was extremely solemn... if the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky that would be like the splendor of the mighty one... the optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist knows it. -j. robert oppenheimer we were lying there, very tense, in the early dawn, and there were just a few streaks of gold in the east; you could see your neighbor very dimly. those ten seconds were the longest ten seconds that i ever experienced. suddenly, there was an enormous flash of light , the brightest light i have ever seen or that i think anyone has ever seen. it blasted; it pounced; it bored its way right through you. it was a vision which was seen with more than the eye. it was seen to last forever. you would wish it to stop; altogether it lasted about two seconds. finally it was over, diminishing, and we looked toward the place where the bomb had been; there was an enormous ball of fire which grew and grew and it rolled as it grew; it went up into the air, in yellow flashes and into scarlet and green. it looked menacing. it seemed to come toward one. a new thing had just been born... -isidor rabi at the instant of the explosion i was looking directly at it, with no eye protection of any kind...the grandeur and magnitude of the phenomenon were completely breath-taking. -robert serber we wore welder's glasses. the thing that got me was not the flash but the ...

Tokyo Woes (1945)

This cartoon (along with other "Hook" cartoons) was found by accident in the garage of a former soldier who had saved them, thinking they were "Private Snafu" shorts. The cartoon was finally discovered in the mid-1990s when an A&E documentary on war cartoons began production. It turned out that Warners made these shorts for the US Navy and because they wanted to keep this a secret, all original negatives were destroyed shortly after release. The "Hook" shorts that were given to the cartoon researchers had "vinegar syndrome" and have deteriorated, but fortunately before that happened, they transferred them to video. ~ Source; IMDB.

Battle of Manila, Free of Japanese Domination 1945/3/22

"The Battle of Manila (Additional pictures, just received, showing the details of the terrible battle between MacArthur's Armies and the fanatical Japs). The Japs, content with delaying actions against the Yanks, as they retreated southward in Luzon, resolved to put on one of their fanatical 'death stands' within the confusion of Manila. The motorized US 1st Cavalry Division enters Rizal Stadium, where Jap fire meets them from the bleachers and the stands. Tank fire and machine guns turn the stadium into a death trap for the Japs. Huge fires are raging throughout the city. Hundreds of huge Yank guns fire across the Pasig River into Jap hideouts. Then foot soldiers of the US 8th Army use rifles, machine guns, liquid fire and grenades to finish off the Japs. Charred Jap corpses are seen. American wounded receive American Red Cross blood plasma. Fighting converges on Intramuros, the old city, surrounded with 30 ft. walls. US artillery breaches the walls, Jap madchine gun nests are silenced, and fighting in Manila ceases. Nuns and Filipino civilians, used as shields by the Nips, leave Manila. Scores of corpses of other civilians are found, tied hand and foot, then coldly stabbed and butchered by the fiendish Japs. General MacArthur walks through Manila, which now lies in absolute and complete ruin, the Stalingrad of the Pacific, Pres. Osmena's government assumes power and Gen. The Philippines 1941-1945

Philippines during World War II The Sack of Manila A Photo Montage by Alfredo Villanueva Music by Richard Wagner (Orchestral Prelude to Lohengrin) Comments by Fred Baldassare "For the sake of historical truth, I must comment that the destruction of Manila, which was "The Pearl of the Orient", before the war, was done in great part by US bombers and US artillery. Gen. Yamashita, unlike Gen. MacArthur in 1941, did not declare Manila an "Open City", which would have freed Manila from hostile activity. After Gen. Yamashita withdrew most of his troops to the Mountain Province, a large contingent of Japanese soldiers and sailors, and Korean marines stayed behind and defended the city, under the command of Admiral Iwabuchi. Manila had to be liberated by fighting it out, street by street, and building to building. With the American and Filipino liberators just on the other side of the Pasig River, the Japanese soldiers and sailors, and the Korean marines proceeded to go from one city block to another, burning and looting the homes, raping the women, and murdering as many citizens of Manila as they could, in biblical proportions. The Ermita, Malate, and Pasay districts were most greatly affected. The Japanese Military, in Manila, declared war on its civilian population. Conservative estimates state the the Manila Massacre, which took place in February, 1945, claimed the lives of over 111000 civilians, an estimate of 35000 more than either Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter Introduced 1945 (Boeing 377 Stratocruiser)

airboyd.tv Boeing C-97 Page http How To Fly The C-97 www.ovi.ch From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter was a long range heavy military cargo aircraft based on the B-29 bomber. Design work began in 1942, with the prototype's first flight in 1944, and the production aircraft entering service in 1947. Between 1947 and 1958, 888 C-97s in several variants were built - 816 of them KC-97 tankers. C-97s served in the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Some aircraft served as flying command posts for the Strategic Air Command, while others were modified for use in Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadrons (ARRS). The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter was developed towards the end of World War II by fitting an enlarged upper fuselage onto a lower fuselage and wings which were essentially the same as the B-50 Superfortress with the tail, wing, and engine layout being nearly identical. It was built before the death of Boeing president, Philip G. Johnson. The prototype XC-97 was powered by the 2200 hp (1640 kW) Wright R-3350 engine, and was fitted with a built-in ramp and a hoist to help in the loading and unloading of supplies and personnel through the large clamshell-type doors in the belly. On January 9, 1945 the first prototype, piloted by Major Curtin L. Reinhardt, flew from Seattle to Washington, DC in 6 hours 4 minutes, an average speed of 383 mph (616 km/h) with 20000 pounds (lb) of cargo, which was for its time rather ...

Deutschland 1945. the western and eastern fronts and of Volkstrumm recruitment. The East Prussian Offensive, known officially to the Soviets as the East Prussian Strategic Offensive Operation, (Russian: Восточно-Прусская стратегическая наступательная операция) was an offensive by the Red Army against the German Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front (World War II). It lasted from 13 January 1945 to 25 April 1945, though some German units did not surrender until 9 May. The Battle of Königsberg was a major part of the offensive, which ended with a total victory for the Red Army. The East Prussian operation is known to German historians as the Second East Prussian Offensive. The First East Prussian operation, known also as the Goldap-Gumbinnen Operation, took place from 16-27 October 1944, and was carried out by the 3rd Belorussian Front under General ID Chernyakhovsky as part of the Memel Offensive Operation (Russian: Мемельская операция) of the 1st Baltic Front. The Soviet forces took heavy casualties while penetrating 30-60km into East Prussia and Poland, and the offensive was postponed until greater reserves could be gathered. The Ruhr Pocket was a battle of encirclement that took place in late March and early April 1945, near the end of World War II, in the Ruhr Area of Germany. It was, for all intents and purposes, the final dagger in Nazi Germany's war effort, as more than 300000 troops were taken prisoner. In March 1945, Allied Forces crossed the Rhine river. "With the Marines at Tarawa" (ca. 1945) Tarawa, or Betio Island, was assaulted on November 20th, 1943 by the 2nd Marine Division. The Japanese defended Tarawa with approximately 3000 men of the 7th Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force, "Japanese Imperial Marines," and 1000 Korean laborers. By the end of the battle 990 US Marines were listed as killed-in-action. Out of the entire Japanese garrison 1 officer and 16 Japanese enlisted men survived. The American public was outraged; by the 3286 casualties, inflicted on the Marines, for an island 1 square mile in size. Marine cameraman took amazing combat footage of the 3 day battle. It was up to that time a shocking account of combat in the Pacific. So shocking was the footage, that many top military figures opposed releasing the film: "With the Marines at Tarawa." President Roosevelt overruled all opposition and the film was released for general circulation. "With the Marines at Tarawa" won an Academy award for: Best Short Documentary in 1945

Lapland war 1944-1945

Dedicated for Finnish and German soldiers in that war. Lapland war were the hostilities between Finland and Nazi Germany between September 1944 and April 1945, fought in Finland's northernmost Lapland Province. When Finnish wrote Moscow Armistice The Soviets demanded that all German troops had to be expelled from Finland. The Finns were thus placed in a situation of having to fight to free their lands of German forces. The Finns' task was complicated by the Soviet demand that the major part of Finnish armed forces must be demobilized at the same time, even while conducting a military campaign against the Germans. General Hjalmar Siilasvuo, the victor of Suomussalmi, led the Finns against the Germans, who were commanded by General Lothar Rendulic. During the first few weeks the withdrawal of Germans and advance of Finnish troops was organised jointly by the headquarters of both armies, a fact that was kept secret from the Soviets. The Germans fell back according to a common timetable, and the Finns attacked and fired at the empty trenches. After two weeks the Soviets realised the deception, and demanded the Finns conduct immediate heavy action against the Germans. Fighting intensified when the Finns made a risky invasion from the sea on 1 October 1944 near Tornio on the border with Sweden. Heavy combat lasted for a week, and the Germans were forced to withdraw In their retreat the German forces under General Lothar Rendulic devastated large areas of northern Finland with ...

Beethoven 'Appassionata', 1st mvt: Dame Myra Hess (1945)

Dame Myra Hess in a lunchtime concert at the National Gallery plays the opening movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 57. During the war years, and the blitz, Dame Myra Hess organized over a thousand concerts at the National Gallery. The Gallery had removed all their paintings, keeping just one on display each month as thousands of folks (many not regular concert goers) came to hear, be inspired, and maybe gain a little hope by these wartime concerts. Andrew Dickson wrote in his blog at the "Guardian": "the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around."
