How to Be Well Groomed (1949)

This film details the grooming rituals of brother "Don" and sister "Sue". Both are incredibly neat; in fact, grooming seems to occupy their entire day, while their evenings are spent ironing outfits and polishing shoes. The work load is so heavy it requires two narrators! Features some excellent voice over lines, including: "Sue avoids red nail polish since it would call attention to her stubby hands." "Mother too keeps up a good appearance even around the house, for that keeps up her spirits." "Their good grooming habits help them in friendships and business. For your success depends a great deal on how you look." Producer: Coronet Instructional Films

KING OF THE ROCKET MEN 1949 SERIAL TRAILER

Re-release theatrical trailer for the 1949 Republic serial, KING OF THE ROCKETMEN, starring Tris Coffin, Mae Clarke and House Peters Jr. The eye-defying flying sequences were accomplished by Republc's ace special effects team of Howard and Theodore Lydecker, who used aa life-sized dummy against natural backgrounds with the camera undercranking at the appropriate speed. Combined with stuntman David Sharpe's spectacular leaps and effective sound effects, the scene of Rocketman in flight still awe today. So popular was the serial, that two additional serials -- RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON (1952) and ZOMBIES OF THE STARTOSPHERE (1952) were built around the Lydecker footage as was the the COMMANDO CODY (1953) series of featurettes, which later sold to television. I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY (1949) by Hank Williams

One of my favourite Hank Williams songs. Hank recorded this track on 30 August 1949 in Ohio. With him were ace studio musicians: Zeke Turner (electric guitar), Louis Innes (rhythm guitar), Jerry Byrd (steel guitar), Ernie Newton (bass), and Tommy Jackson (fiddle). They were known as the Nashville A-Team, and were not part of the Drifting Cowboys who toured with Hank at that time (although a couple did do stints with them). The Drifting Cowboys did record with Hank on many other sessions. According to Colin Escott who wrote a biography on Hank "Here is the chill of the void that would become one of the hallmarks of Hank's writing. It is the most oft cited example of Hank Williams the hillbilly poet, but its poetic form comes from the fact that it was originally intended to be spoken, not sung. Acuff-Rose staff writer Vic McAlpin said that Hank had written it for his first session of recitations slated for January 1950, but at some point he changed his mind. "I think ol' Hank needs to record this," he told McAlpin. Hank was concerned that some of the lines might sound self-consciously artsy and alienate his audience, but, as he so often did, he tried out the song on friends, fellow performers, and Fred Rose, and let them convince him that he had excelled". Veteran Nashville songwriter Jimmy Rule recalls: "One day I was over at Acuff-Rose, our mutual publisher, and Hank handed me a piece of paper and said, "Do you think people will understand what I'm trying to say when I ...

Mighty Joe Young Trailer, 1949

I'm an avid Ray Harryhausen fan, and this is one of my favorites. Disney remade it some years later, but I still love the stop-motion special effects from this era. If you haven't seen this already then it chronicles the story of an ape that gets adopted by a young girl. In typical Hollywood fashion...the ape is transported to civilization where mayhem ensues and terror and confusion are the norm. Add in a little romance, excitement and a happy ending to get a lovable movie called "Mighty Joe Young."

This is the once famous music that catapulted the 1948 film to the status of a #1 box office hit in Britain. Rota adapted the first movement to a symphony he was working on, the Sinfonia Sopra una Canzone d'Amore, and added an overture for the film. It is sung by Tito Gobbi.

Part 1 of 3. Now this is a piece of television history. A rarely seen complete half hour as broadcast live on Channel 4 New York, then known as WNBT (now WNBC) on April 30, 1949 (aired 8-8:30 pm ET): the WNBT 10th Anniversary Show hosted by Ben Grauer. Ben Grauer is seen outside sutdio 3H where he says the first WNBT-TV show was broadcast 10 years ago from experimental station W2XBS. Scenes from the 1939 World's Fair include: The GM Building, the Trylon & Perisphere, Avenue of Nations, and RCA Building. Exteriors of the Empire State Building and RCA Building at Rockefeller Center are shown. Earl Wrightson sings "There's a Great Day Coming". Kyle MacDonnell & Wrightson sing "The Alphabet Song" accompanied by The Norman Paris Trio. See signs on floor of 1944 Democratic Convention in Chicago and results come in to the NBC Studios on Election Night. Ben Grauer gives on-air election results. Later see early video footage off a WWII aircraft carrier. More music and song with The Three Flames. This is a kinescope recording from a very early CRT monitor. Meet King Joe (1949)

Cold War cartoon aimed at American workers with the objective of convincing them of their good fortune. "American labor, management and capital -- the greatest production team in the history of mankind -- have made the United States the industrial master of the world." This theatrical cartoon is one of the "fun and facts about America" series, made "to create a deeper understanding of what has made America the finest place in the world to live." Actually, it was financed by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, created by the chairman of General Motors, and its message in the labor-unruly late forties is clear. Joe, who wears overalls and talks with a pseudo-Brooklyn accent, is "king of the workers of the world" NOT because he is worthy, but because the machinery in his factory "multiplies strength and efficiency." This is part of "the "American way of doing things," the narrator tells us. We also learn that Joe is "king" not because he can exert power over anything (union rabble-rousers take note), but because "he can buy more with his wages than any other worker on the globe." Joe dutifully goes on a shopping spree to demonstrate. As proof that the American system is the most wonderful on earth, the narrator informs us that Americans own 72% of the cars in the world, 92% of the bathtubs, and "practically all the refrigerators in existence." In the end, Joe sits atop a giant machine that spits out futuristic cars, TVs and washing machines at the yank of a lever. While America ...

Dating Do's and Don'ts (1949) Part 2

This social guidance "how-to" film has received more camp accolades than any other, and deserves it. Alan Woodruff ("Woody") receives a ticket to admit one couple to the upcoming Hi-Teen Carnival. "One couple," Woody reflects. "That means a date! Not like just going around with the crowd!" Woody decides to ask Ann Davis, who, the narrator points out, "knows how to have a good time." With her perpetual squint and chipmunk cheeks, Ann (pronounced "Ay-yun" by the actors in this film) is the perfect companion for super-nerd Woody. At crucial moments in the date, the narrator stops the action and presents Woody with several possible options for his actions. Happily, Woody makes all the correct decisions and ends up walking home from Ann's doorstep whistling with satisfaction at a job well done. "Thanks so much," says Ann with a toothy grin. "I had LOADS of fun." Classic Coronet! Rare (but incomplete) Kodachrome version.

Sikorsky S-52 First Helicopter Loop - 1949

HE "Tommy" Thompson loops the Sikorsky S-52 helicopter in 1949. First recorded helicopter loop from 8mm movie and stills. Thompson also set an international speed record of 129.616 mph in this craft. Describing looping the S-52 from my Dad's memoir - "At about two hundred feet I put the helicopter in a dive and picked up airspeed to approximately 120 miles per hour; by this time at the bottom of the loop we were only twenty or thirty feet above the ground. Then the ordeal of raising the pitch stick, applying more power, gradually easing back on the azimuth stick more and more until as you look over backward and see the horizon and ground as the helicopter is now upside down in reference to the ground. Just before going over I backed off on power and pitch and by all means didn't allow the rotor RPM to exceed it's red line. Gingerly continuing to hold back on the azimuth stick allowed us to begin our descent down to the landmark from which we started. As we were coming down, we felt a thump or thud which shook the helicopter. This thump or thud was rewarding in that it signified our loop was next to perfect in that we reentered our prop or blade wash." Tommy was flying that day with Adolph Plenefisch, the S-52 crew chief. Prior to the flight. he had asked Adolph to adjust the aircraft for maximum fore and aft control that was allowable without mast bumping. Adolph was a little suspicious and wanted to accompany him if he was going to try anything aggressive. Thompson ...

Women's fashions: year by year: 1949-1980

Year by year images of women's fashions, 1949-1980, with 4 frames per year - more or less arbitrary selection- pics not in any chronological order within each year. The music is 'Aphrodite' by Alessandro Carabelli (details at All About Jazz website) WARNING! 1/Ideally, a slide show like this should be put together by someone with some credentials in, or a wide knowledge of, fashion history (rather than a mild interest)- but I did it anyway. I like the way the images convey the passing of years and decades. 2/ To the best of my knowledge (!) all images were published in the year shown - except that of the hippie girl in 1968b, which I believe is a later watercolour rendition of a pic of someone who attended a concert in Hyde Park, London, in that year. Ive had to try and judge which sources to trust for dates of post 1960 pattern illustrations and several individual scans. 3/Images should be seen as picked at random from each year and jumbled up within a year. The 4 frames per year do not represent any chronological order. Because fashion seasons begin in spring and autumn it is possible that things like Year A (all Dec pics) Year B (all Jan pics) Year C (all Dec pics) (meaning situations where 2 consecutive years containing one season are followed by 3 seasons being skipped before the images for the next year) could happen but blind chance makes it unlikely. Besides the hippie girl in 1968b, there are 2 other non-contemporary images: the mannequins from the Bath costume ...

www.painteddesigns.nl A short film was made in 1949 by Esso and the Wolfsburg volkswagen plant. This was only 4 years after the war. Only few could affort to drive a car. Amazing is to see the early split window car playing a main role in the film Kleiner Wagen, grosse Liebe. I was told the pretty lady in this clip is NOT Hilde Hildebrand, but she appears in the film this scene was extracted from. She was a well known german pre-war actress. She plays alongside less well known actors like Jakob tiedtke, Beppo Brem appear in this short film. This song is sung at the end of the 58 minutes movie.
