This is a close-up video study of the famous Lockheed P-38 "Glacier Girl" that was recovered from under 268 feet of glacier ice in Greenland in 1992. Most of the video was taken at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, Calif. in March and April, 2007. The take-off sequence was taken at Palm Springs, Calif in 2005. Simon Faithfulls Escape Vehicle no.6 started as a live event commissioned by The Arts Catalyst for its 2004 Artists Airshow. The live audience witnessed the launching of a weather balloon with a domestic chair dangling in space beneath it. Once the apparatus had disappeared into the sky, they then watched a live video relay from the weather balloon on a giant screen as it journeyed from the ground to the edge of space (30km up). Now presented as a non-live video work, the footage shows the chair first rush away from the fields and roads, ascend through clouds and finally (against the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space) begin to disintegrate. The chilling nature of the film is that the empty chair invites the audience to imagine taking a journey to an uninhabitable realm where it is impossible to breath, the temperature is minus 60 below and the sky now resembles the blackness of space.

This Lecture was presented on Wednesday, October 6 at the National Air and Space Museum's National Mall building. Learn about "Glacier Girl," the famous Lockheed P-38 that became stranded on the Greenland Ice Cap, from Bob Cardin, the man in charge of rescuing her, and Rod Lewis, her owner. On her way to Europe to fight in World War II, "Glacier Girl" made an emergency landing. Although the crew survived and was rescued, the aircraft remained in Greenland for the next 50 years under 268 feet of ice. After being dug out by a team of aviation enthusiasts, the airplane was repaired to flying condition, a process that took 10 years. "Glacier Girl" is now one of the most recognized and award-winning airplanes in the world. The GE Aviation Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of GE Aviation.

Arm Chair Reaches 98268 Feet The latest object to shoot high-def video from the edge of space isan arm chair. • The shots were taken at a staggering 98268 feet above the earth using Toshiba's own cameras • To reach the altitude required and to conform with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, the weight of the rig had to be carefully managed to a weight of no more than four pounds • Tied to the rig was More.. a specially created full-sized model chair made of biodegradable balsa wood the chair was made by a company called Artem and cost about £2500 • Launch coordinates of the rig were - 119 degrees, 14 minutes by 40 degrees, 48 minute (12 miles North-East of the town of Gerlach, Nevada) • The quality of the footage from the Toshiba IK-HR1S cameras was: 1920x1080 pixel count; 1080i @ 50hz; 100 Mbps • The temperature dropped to minus 90 degrees when the chair reached 52037 feet • The chair took 83 minutes to reach an altitude of 98268 feet where it broke and took just 24 minutes to fall back down to earth with the rig.

Deep Forest of Old Growth Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Sitka Spruce and the Fir later known as the Douglas Fir, once covered the entire Valleys including Issaquah. In the Video, the "Land of the Giants", the story unfolds the history of the Snoqualmie Pass from an Indian Trail to the seven lane Interstate Highway I-90; from the Ski Resort at the Pass down into the Forest of Giant Old Growth Trees which existed in the Snoqualmie Valley West on Interstate I-90. The Old Trees stretched north of the Canadian Border and South into Northern California, a distance of over 640+ miles and from west of the Cascade Range slopes to the Pacific Ocean, further than the eye could see. The documentary shows shots taken of these Old Trees from the late 1890's when they were often photographed by professional photographers of Tourists gathered around the OG trees. One of the Old Growth Western Red Cedars was over 1500 years old and was claimed to be the LARGEST TREE in Washington in 1896. The tree was measured to be over 100 feet in circum-ference. It's no secret that Chrysler is making the most of its new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine.
