4g63 Balance Shaft Elimination - bearing modification

This is the first part of a two part series about balance shaft elimination on 4g series engines. This video details the bearings, the other video will cover the front case modifications. I've already got a low-def video of the front case mods, and I plan to re-shoot that one in HD when I'm in the assembly phase. It's linked in the video. The balance shafts are designed to cancel out harmonic vibrations caused by combustion and the spinning rotating assembly. They may offer a greater degree of comfort to the driver and passengers, but with that comfort comes a price. Often, when a 4g63 timing belt gives up, it's because the balance shaft belt breaks or comes loose and takes the timing belt out with it. When that happens, it can total your pistons, valves, damage the crankshaft, wrist pins, timing belt tensioner and crank angle sensor. Basically, it can total your motor. The balance shafts also have a combined weigh over 10 lbs and both are driven off the timing belt making them additional and heavy rotating mass. If you've got a lightweight flywheel but still have balance shafts, you have your priorities mixed up. So here's what you do with the bearings. It's easy. You can do this at home. You CAN do it with the motor in the car, BUT DON'T. You must enjoy punishment to do this like that. The end result will slightly increase your oil pressure, but usually not enough to cause concern unless you have a full-circumference bearing turbo, ball bearing turbo--with your oil feed ...

4g63 Coil On Plug 201

This is a continuation from my earlier coil-on-plug how-to video. I was troubleshooting an ignition problem where I couldn't boost over 14 PSI without misfiring or backfiring despite having an ignition amplifier, and this is what worked to completely resolve my troubles. There's lots of information about what parts work well on a 4g63 (and their relevance) as well as lots of reports about people having ignition problems once they're installed. I noticed that there's not really any instruction available regarding ideal methods for trimming the longer Chrysler boot down to the size and shape for a 4g63 setup. Some of this could be due to the depth of various COP mounting plates, but this video is intended as an effort to help fill that void regardless of why. If the boots are not trimmed properly, then as combustion chamber pressure increases, the possibility of the spark arcing from the plug into the plug well is possible. This can happen on improperly insulated plugs, or as a result of an old worn boot. The solution if your coil resistance is good... is to run down to NAPA and buy yourself a set of new boots. They come with new springs. They just need to fully-sleeve the spark plug's ceramic insulator, and make good electrical contact internally. If air can get in and out, so can spark. FYI: When inspecting older worn-out boots, wherever spark leaks through leaves a white spot.

This is the video I made for the rebuild I did on my 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. It took us over 6 months of hard work consisting of many almost sleepless nights, and countless frustrating moments that almost made us walk away. Engine Work Includes: honed cylinders, decked head and block, head rebuilt, new timing components, water pump, arp main and headstuds, acl race bearings, cometic mls headgasket, new engine gasket set, stock pistons and rods, odds and end stuff.
WORLDS FASTEST SKYLINE/ 4G63 DATSUN/ 20B RX7 IN TESTING

Willowbank Raceway held the 1st of the 2012 Top Sportman Series on the weekend. Reece McGregor and the Heat Treatments Skyline thought it would be a good chance to have some test runs in their worlds fastest RB26 powered 4wd skyline. The team worked hard all day and were rewarded with a final pass or 7.64, not far off their 7.56 record, although something tells me theres plenty more to come from this car again. Another car using the test lane was Rob Novak in his Jett Racing 4G63 powered Datsun 1200. The team made adjustments through the day and saw a PB 7.35 @ 187mph on the second last pass of the night, the final wild pass on video then saw a transmission failure but a happy team none the less. Final team testing was the Direct Clutch/Promodz Rx7, the car is 3/4 chassis and a running 3rotor 20BT tweaked by Mazfix. The team recently made adjustments in the rear and also in transmission and are starting to see results, it ran a 7.99 @ 171mph through the day, then later in the night suffered a leaking boost pipe. Owners Jerry and Dan tell me they havent even started to push the motor yet, so another car with plenty more to come, and im sure that pb 7.80 will soon be slashed. These cars should all be running at the up and coming Sydney Jamboree at WSID and by the looks of things have some unfinished business they want to take care of :) www.insidedragimport.com www.willowbankraceway.com.au www.jamboree.com.au

6 bolt 4g63 in 2g Eclipse GSX cylinder head removed in under 10 mins

Removing the head of a 4G63 in 10x speed. The project got delayed a few months. After finishing it and cranking it over, Interference in the cylinder was discovered. Shamefully, I admit my mistakes were: 1) Not putting the spark plugs in immediately after installing the head. 2) The bad habit of using my Valve Cover as a parts tray and 3) Putting off the project too long, so I didn't recognize a missing bolt from a custom fabrication. The head needed new valve seats, valves and some welding. Wiseco and the machinist both thought I'd be OK running the piston after smoothing out hot spots, but I ordered a new piston not wanting to risk the deep gouge in it with the high boost I plan to run. Peace of mind is priceless. The danger in being over confident is sometimes you skip triple checking stuff. I've built that engine at least 5 times and got careless. 4g63 Turbo Manifold Swap #1

This is one of the problems I found after the Thursday night test & tune. Over the next 2 days, I kept watching my airflow counts dropping gradually in my logs and knew what was going down. Then I decided to drive it to work and it sounded like somebody was running next to me with a lawnmower... further confirming that I knew what was going on. Yep. Pre-turbo exhaust leak. It still had balls when I mashed the gas, but I could tell it wasn't right. I was surprised because when I found the crack, I realized I shouldn't have even been able to spool the turbo. This manifold flows better than the stock piece, sure... but unless you get one made of inconel, it's a raging pile of crap. Get rid of it. 304 stainless doesn't cut it. I even had the lower turbo/exhaust brace in place, so it wasn't getting wrenched on accelerating and decelerating. This thing just wore out & broke off from heat and pressure, and it did it in less than 2000 miles. Yes, it's the one in the polishing video. Other things that are a good idea to do... 1) always use factory turbo bolts and washers. You're supposed to replace them with NEW bolts and washers. Use FACTORY TORQUE SPECS! 21-23lbs + 60-70° 2) Stainless Steel 3mm turbo gaskets are re-usable. Worth the investment. 3) Use Stainless Steel ARP head studs. They don't break off like OEM ones do. This job sucks when you snap off factory studs. Use FACTORY TORQUE SPECS! 19-21 lbs (even on ARP hardware) for the M8 nuts. 21-23 lbs on the outer two M10 nuts ...

Jamie's 92 Hyundai Elantra with bastard 4g63 swap

There's a history both behind this car, and the friendship with this person. I met him 10 years ago following a random conversation that I injected myself into between 2 strangers at an auto parts store. I had just bought a '92 Civic CX with crap compression and was picking up some service parts to keep it limping and useful while I built my DSM. I overheard him mention "4g63" to somebody as I walked by, so I turned around and introduced myself without any clue that he was one of the "realest" people I've ever known. What occurred for me in the following discussion was an awakening on my part. He led me to an adjacent parking lot where an un-assuming Hyundai Elantra sat. This isn't the one, but is one of many factory cars that he's swapped a 4g63 into. What he managed to get through my big thick skull was there were lots of great inconspicuous chassis that you can simply bolt a 4g63 into. Over time it became evident where you can find lots of "racing" parts, from factory equipment on various mini-vans, station wagons, much of the Hyundai line-up from '92-'95. During the "DSM Years", there were plenty of cars from other manufacturers that made dynamite donors, and this sparked my ability to be frugal in some of my ventures. If you ever meet Jamie, expect his knowledge of car parts both inside and outside the realm of Mitsubishi to be as unassuming on the surface as the car in this video. He has true talent. Blueprint 102 - Measuring 4g63 Crankshaft Endplay

4g63's are famous for hosing crankshaft thrust bearings. This video illustrates the process of how to check the thrust bearing clearance whether the motor's in the car or not. Of course in my case the motor's on a stand for this video. Lucky for me! In cases where the engine is still in the car, the same procedures can be used so long as the indicator is attached to the engine block. The plunger can be set up touching either the inside of the crank pulley or by removing the clutch cover plate and contacting the flywheel. What the thrust bearing does, is prevent the crankshaft from having lateral movement in the main bearings. If a crankshaft develops excessive movement here, clutch engagement and hydraulic problems will begin showing up, followed shortly thereafter by catastrophic failure of main bearings, rod bearings, connecting rod failures, oil pressure problems, or even broken blocks, crankshafts and rods in extreme cases. It's important that every 4g63 turbo engine is within spec on this measurement. When the crankshaft aggressively wears through the thrust bearing developing lateral play, this is called "crankwalk". On some block castings, replacing the bearings will NOT fix the problem. An engine block that is prone to crankwalking can not be fixed. The only option in these cases is to replace the shortblock and rotating assembly with new or used parts that are stronger than the one you've unfortunately encountered. For the 2g guys, the best option for repairing ...

How to build a 4g63 Coil On Plug Assembly

This is just like all other do it yourself projects. 1) Buy parts that make doing the job easiest for you. 2) Put the stuff together. 3) Install it. No really, I used the JMFabrications Coil Plate, ordered all new UF269 Chrysler coils and wiring from Toyota. This video is intended to compliment thread #290665 at DSMTuners dot com which contains wiring diagrams and part numbers for these specific products. The only thing I did different was use 3/16" grommets in the harness holes rather than elongating them to prevent wire chaffing. I went a little overboard with the convoluted tubing, but it looks fantastic. you can get coils from Chrysler models... 1999-2003 300M 2003-2003 300M PRO-AM 2002-2003 300M SPECIAL 1998-2001 CONCORDE 2002-2003 CONCORDE LIMITED 2002-2003 CONCORDE LXI 1998-2003 INTREPID 1999-2001 LHS 2001-2002 PROWLER DODGE... 1998-2001 INTREPID 2000-2000 INTREPID ES 2000-2002 INTREPID R/T 2002-2003 INTREPID SE 2003-2003 INTREPID SXT 1997-2001 PROWLER What isn't covered in that thread is the necessity of a capacitive discharge system. This is the documentary of the blood, sweat, and beers that went into the 2.0L conversion to a 2.6L Stroker engine race car. Built for the DSM Shootout with some friendly gear heads. Its been for one test drive around the block and it was a blast just to see this beast drive under its own power after months of hard work. It still needs quite a bit of tuning so if anyone is very knowledgeable in the area of tuning, we could definitely use some advice. Ive researched and noticed that all of the 2.6L Stroker motors out there have the 7-bolt crank. I have yet to find another one like this build with the 6-bolt crank 106mm. 4G63 Lifter removal without special tool part 1

Part one includes some general info, and removing the rocker arms with a screw driver. Not a special tool. And without removing the timing belt, or even removing the cams. You should theoretically be able to get about 8 of them off the first time around. (Keeping in mind cam phasing regarding which valves are depressed or obscured by the cam lobes.) You can bump the starter to inch the cams along if you don't feel like rolling the motor over by hand. Keep everything clear of spinning things or you will hate your life. Car pictured is an Evo VIII. All DSM similar. If you aren't excited about doing it this way, or someone specifically said not to, and gave you a reason to believe its not the right way to do it. Don't do it this way. However I have and it works. Use a rag to cover the rockers as they pop off or they can fly. It's also good insulation for your fingers so they don't get struck by a flying lifter. FYI... if you do you will likely be bleeding. They come off with considerable force. Again, take your time, be patient... (not like me rushing in the video) and it will work just fine.
4G63 Lifter installation without special tool part 2

In this segment I reinstall the rockers over the new lifters. Again, no special tools, or removal of the timing belt, cams, or cam caps. All we are doing here is putting the rockers back in place over fully bled aftermarket (topline) "3g" big hole lifters. These are NOT ebay lifters. I can't speak for them - I have never used them. *** Some side notes and related info*** -This car was purchased used with about 22k on it. They started ticking heavily about the third day after I bought it 2 years ago... and have ticked for about 20k more miles. -I recently switched from a 969400011 rom (05 rom) to a patched version of 96530006. Which must run different knock filters, as I had excessive part throttle knock I previously did not have. -Topline lifters stopped the part throttle knock -While they were pumping up and chattering, I couldn't even drive the car. I got repeated high knock counts to the point I could feel timing being pulled through the floor. -Once they filled up with oil and went silent I have NO knock. Even between gears, from stops, after a aggressive throttle then reapplication of throttle... Basically all the places I had knock before, I don't now. Which is great when it's this simple. Yay for lifters that don't tick.

Polishing a 2g GSX 4g63 Turbo cylinder head & manifold

The stainless steel manifold had never been polished, but the nice thing about stainless is you don't have to do all the prep-sanding that you do with Aluminum before being able to polish it. Aluminum takes 10x the effort with sanding than it does to polish. Fortunately I had already done all of that to the head and coolant neck back in '05, so all it needed was black rouge to come back to life. Stainless is much more corrosion resistant, but tends to blue itself with heat over time. I think it cleaned up pretty well!
