I previously had an Armalite AR-50, but sold it to buy the Barrett M99. The Armalite is a very nice gun, but I dig that you can shoot the Barrett offhand (nearly impossible with the Armalite). The fluted barrel and efficient titanium muzzle brake make all the difference in recoil (which is still stout, but manageable). Many people ask about the cost of ammo. It's typically between $4-8 per shot. Armor-piercing incendiary military ball ammo is, interestingly enough, cheapest. High-quality solid-brass boat-tail rounds get up into the $7-8 round easily. Shooting a 50 BMG is an expensive hobby, but it's not really too bad if you put in perspective. Many guys will go out and shoot a few hundred rounds ($50-60) worth of AR or AK ammo at some cinder blocks at 50-100 yards and not think twice about it. For that same price, you could go out and shoot one box (ten rounds) of 50 BMG at 500-1000 yards. It's the same cost, just a different challenge and different discipline.
