Canadian Armed Forces 707 DVDs Part 1 and 2 are now available: henrytenby.com henrytenby.com The Canadian Armed Forces operated a fleet of five Boeing 707 transports (code named CC-137s) from 1970 through 1997. These reliable aircraft provided the Canadian military with a truly global deployment capability, with air-to-air refueling, humanitarian, and troop and cargo transport capabilities. The footage on this DVD was filmed using state-of-the-art TV broadcast betacams. This two-part visual documentary takes the viewer for an up-close visit exploring all aspects of the operation. On this DVD, a period CAF promo film explains the workings of a trans-Atlantic CF-5 refueling flight across the pond. We then fly from Kai Tak to YVR on a Vietnamese refugee flight in 1979. Then we join troops boarding their CC-137 at Quebec City for their flight to Andoya for military exercises, along with a tanker CC-137 escorting CF-5s across the pond. Theres ample footage of all the action at Andoya airfield with lots of noisy & smoky 707 footage. The CC-137s were based at CFB Trenton where we then soak up some winter cold weather operations. Finally, we join a sked-run military passenger flight between Ottawa and CFB Trenton. Tex Johnston rolls a 707
On August 7, 1955, Alvin M. "Tex" Johnston stuns the crowd at the Seafair Gold Cup hydroplane race on Lake Washington by barrel (or aileron) rolling the prototype Dash-80, the precursor to the Boeing 707, thus launching the era of the modern commercial jet. Johnston's co-pilot was Boeing test pilot James R. Gannett (1923-2006). (What Johnston did with the airplane was called a barrel-roll but some consider it an aileron roll in which a plane rotates on its long axis, rather than describing a "barrel" loop. However, unlike a conventional aileron, or snap, roll, Johnston maintained positive gravity through the maneuver.) Even Boeing President William Allen is taken by surprise as he escorts potential customers who are seeing the jet for the first time. Flying at more than 400 miles per hour just 400 feet above the water, Johnston commenced a sudden ascent. The jet's swept-back wings spiraled as the 128-foot-long, 160000 pound plane rolled, flying for a short time upside down. Then, for extra measure, Johnston performed a second barrel-roll. Boeing President Allen asked a guest with a heart problem if he could borrow his pills. The potential jet buyers were duly impressed. By the time Johnston broke the transcontinental speed record in 1957 by flying from Seattle to Baltimore in three hours, 48 minutes, orders for the new 707 were pouring in.

2nd and final test flight, at Southend (UK), of Australia's first civil jet aircraft (Apologies for the wind noise - it was gusting 22kts). Also the first 707 sold by Boeing to a foreign customer, and the first short bodied, QANTAS specific, model -138. Departed for Sydney via Dublin, Tenerife, Orlando, Los Angeles, Honolulu and Nadi 2 days later. It will eventually reside at the QANTAS FOUNDATION MEMORIAL museum in Longreach, Queensland.

www.henrytenby.com Throughout the Lebanese civil war, Lebanon's flag-carrier airline MEA kept flying, while almost everything else in Beirut was destroyed. Most would have thought that Middle East Airlines, like the country it serves, should have gone out of business. This DVD examines the story behind MEA's remarkable survival, with on-location action footage of MEA Boeing 707 and Boeing 720 aircraft shot at Athens, Beirut and Larnaca Airport, as well as once-in-a-lifetime flights aboard these historic aircraft. Exterior and interior footage of 707 air-starts (one engine at a time), taxiing, take-off, passenger cabin and cockpit, and landings will bring back the memories of what it was like to fly as a passenger on a Boeing 707! In September, 1994, with MEA's assistance, airline videographer Henry Tenby traveled to Beirut to visit the airline and document their current day operation, which was then, one of the world's last, passenger Boeing 707 operations. MEA retired the last Boeing 707 in 1997, but their memory lives on forever on this DVD, dedicated to the many MEA employees responsible for the company's survival. Female Special Forces
In the South Korean Military there is a small unit of elite female soldiers. They are part of the super elite 707th Special Missions Unit "White Tigers". When I was in Korea to participate in exercises I got to meet and see them in action. They work side by side with the men, or on their own. I was told by the Brigadier General in charge of the unit that no special treatment was given because they are women. In fact their selection is deemed more difficult as they have limited slots for their platoon size unit. In the 707th White Tiger culture they are accepted as equals and indeed the Korean command is quite proud of them.

Prewar tv set Marconi 707 from 1938
Some footage displayed on a prewar television set from 1938. The original picture tube of this set has broken filaments. In a test, a radar picture tube 7BP7 was installed into the tv set. The scanning coils were driven to their limits to provide a full screen raster. The design of this television set shows its roots in radio design. It looks like a radio, and it has a radio too. But it is a radio with vision, with image. In these old days, no concrete conception did exist what a tv set has to look like.

Boeing 707-3J6B belonging to Quiet Skies doing a high speed run/aborted takeoff and then departing, landing & even includes cockpit and interior shots. They eventually made this aircraft Stage III compliant and even put winglets on to find a customer for it which sadly never happened so this plane was broken up. All footage prior to the landing was shot by my Dad, everything else was by me.

AviationExplorer.com - NEWLY EDITED VERSION As part of the Dash 80s demonstration program, Bill Allen invited representatives of the Aircraft Industries Association and International Air Transport Association to the Seattle's 1955 Seafair and Gold Cup Hydroplane Races held on Lake Washington on August 6, 1955. The Dash-80 was scheduled to perform a simple flyover, but Boeing test pilot Alvin "Tex" Johnston instead performed a barrel roll to show off the jet airliner. The next day, Allen summoned Johnston to his office and told him not to perform such a maneuver again, Johnston's assertion that doing so was completely safe. Boeing Chief Test Pilot John Cashman stated that just before he piloted the maiden flight of the Boeing 777 on June 12, 1994, his last instructions from then Boeing President Phil Condit were "No rolls".
