This is my favorite Funk beat of all time. I had floundered over getting this beat correct until I finally met with the master of this beat face to face. The story goes that John Blackwell used his rendition of this beat to seal the deal during an audition with Prince and then performed on the Musicology tour with him. A new line-up of my beloved funk-project "The Roots Of Funk", performing live at jazzclub Fasching in Stockholm 100305. The song is 777-9311, one of my absolute The Time favorites. It´sa real challenge to make it sound good and groovy live, especially in regard to the complex rythmic drummachine patterns programmed on the original track. We tried to capture that same feel but in a live situation. A big hand to our drummer Andreas who made an outstanding job keeping all the patterns going with only two hands and two feet. The footage is a sync from a DV camera recording with the raw audiofiles I was handed from the sound engineers mixing console (48 tracks). I put them on my harddrive and made a rough mix at home using Logic 9. The instrument separation is quite good I think (but on the downside it lacks some audience ambience). Did a 8o's gig at Fasching in Stockholm a couple of months ago. A video of the band performing legendary song 777-9311 by The Time was put up on YouTube. A lot of great comments, but there were some that said that they didn't believe that I played the very busy hi-hat pattern live and that it was prerecorded. So this is a video for you nonbelievers that it is possible to play that beat by the book and this is how I played it live during the gig. And to get the beat right i use a Roland SPD-S with a Cabasa quater note loop being triggerd live on the unit and a Hand Clap loop on 2 and 4 being trigged on a external pad just to the right of the hi-hat, no sync or click just a good sence of the tempo of the song. -- enjoy!
