It is a comic revision of the classic Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Mr. Dinkle and Jack look for work at the Cosman Employment Agency. Jack makes advances to Cosman employee Polly, but he is thwarted by the arrival of her boyfriend, a towering police officer. Polly assigns Dinkle and Jack to babysit for Eloise Larkin's brother and infant sister, while Eloise and her fiancé are out for the evening. The babysitting duties are complicated by the fact that Donald is something of a prodigy, as well as a self-proclaimed "problem child". The dullwitted Jack is soon outclassed by the child, and an attempt to lull the boy to sleep by reading the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk (Jack's "favorite novel") aloud fails when Jack stumbles over the larger words. Bemused by Jack's incompetence, Donald reads the story instead -- a role-reversal made complete when Jack falls asleep as Donald reads. In his slumber, Jack dreams that he is the young Jack of the fairy tale. In his dream Jack learns that the Giant, who lives in a castle in the sky, has stolen all of the land's wealth and food. The situation obliges the kingdom's Princess to marry The Prince of a neighboring kingdom, whom she has never met. In real life Joe Kirk was Lou's brother-in-law. Born Ignacio "Nat" Curcuruto, the bulk of Joe Kirk's early film career consisted of playing bit parts, often uncredited, in low budget productions. Typical roles for him were "ethnic" Sicilian-Americans...gangsters, bartenders, bookies, and henchmen. He appeared in several films produced at Monogram Pictures, including "Spooks Run Wild" (1941), "Dick Tracy vs. Crime Inc." (1941), "Mr. Wise Guy" (1942), and "Smart Alecks" (1942). He was occasionally billed as "Joseph I. Kirk", the "I" standing for his birth-name, Ignacio. Through his marriage to Marie Cristillo, the sister of Lou Costello, Kirk secured steady appearances (albeit in small roles) in Abbott and Costello films. His more prominent parts included the pet shop owner in "Rio Rita" (1942), Honest Dan the Bookie in "Here Come the Co-Eds" (1946), the shady real estate agent in "Buck Privates Come Home" (1947) and Dr. Orvilla in "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars" (1953). Kirk continued acting through the late 1950s, with appearances in "The Jackie Robinson Story" (1950), the 1956 Bowery Boys comedy "Hot Shots" and Fritz Lang's drama "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" (1956). [From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Here is a classic vaudevillian sketch that you have probably seen from more than one comedian or team (The Three Stooges in their short "Gents Without Cents" first comes to mind). Lou finds himself behind bars with a psychopathic jail mate, Sidney "Sid" Fields. Of course, the violent psychotic trigger is the mention of "Niagara Falls". At the end of this clip we also see Sid playing the dual role as their lawyer. This just shows that Monty Python was not the first team to have the same actor playing multiple roles in the same show...or even the same sketch!

Abbott and Costello - Jack and the Beanstalk
This ambitious film begins with Jack's descendant and works its way backward to the story of the original young man and the beanstalk. Because the first Jack used that towering vine to steal a giant's magic goose and harp, an entire world was reduced to poverty and a bloodline was cursed--all Robinson men die in their 40s, and the modern-day Jack is around that age. Fortunately, Ondine (Mia Sara), a visitor from the giant's alternative reality, has a plan. If she and Jack can recover the stolen items in time, they may be able to solve both problems. The made-for-TV movie boasts top stars (including Vanessa Redgrave and Jon Voight) and Jim Henson's Creature Shop's nifty special effects. Although children younger than 10 may find the complex narrative confusing and the implied violence scary, Jack and the Beanstalk is an inventive retelling that adds new life to an old story
