Abbott & Costello - The Niagara Falls Sketch ("Slowly I Turned")

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Here is a classic vaudevillian sketch that you have probably seen from more than one comedian or team (The Three Stooges in their short "Gents Without Cents" first comes to mind). Lou finds himself behind bars with a psychopathic jail mate, Sidney "Sid" Fields. Of course, the violent psychotic trigger is the mention of "Niagara Falls". At the end of this clip we also see Sid playing the dual role as their lawyer. This just shows that Monty Python was not the first team to have the same actor playing multiple roles in the same show...or even the same sketch!

Africa Screams: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Max Baer, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser (1949 Movie)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com Africa Screams is a 1949 comedy film starring Abbott and Costello and directed by Charles Barton. Diana Emerson (Hillary Brooke) is in the book department of Klopper's Department store looking for a copy of the book Dark Safari, written by the famed explorer Cuddleford. Buzz Johnson (Bud Abbott) overhears Diana saying that she will pay $2500 for a map that is inside that book. He devises a plan to pass off his friend Stanley Livington (Lou Costello) as a great explorer who accompanied Cuddleford on the expedition described in the book. With claims that he can reproduce the map, the two men go to Diana's home that very night. They agree to accompany her on an African expedition, and when Bud overhears that Clyde Beatty has been offered $20000 to lead the expedition, he feels that the map is worth considerably more than $2500. They travel to Africa, along with Diana's team of explorers, including Harry (Joe Besser), 'Boots' Wilson (Buddy Baer), 'Grappler' McCoy (Max Baer) and Gunner (Shemp Howard), a nearsighted gunman. The boys learn that the true expedition is for diamonds rather than exploration, and Buzz plans to renegotiate the deal. Unfortunately Stanley cannot reproduce the map, as he has never seen it, and the two attempt to bluff their way around the jungle. Eventually the entire expeditionary team arrives at a cannibal village, where the chief offers several diamonds in exchange for Stanley ("Chief have sweet tooth," explains ...

Slowly I turned... Step by step...

The classic skit starring Lou Costello and the incredible Sid Fields. For those claiming that this is a "rip-off" of a Three Stooges bit, it's worth noting that the Stooges did their version in 1944's "Gents Without Cents", the same year Abbott and Costello did the "Poko Moko" variation of the skit in "Lost in a Harem." The skit actually predates all recorded performances, and is believed to have been invented by Phil Silvers' one-time partner and gag-man, Joey Faye. Abbott and Costello's "Susquehanna Hat Company" routine is also based on the same bit.

Abbott and Costello in Jack and the Beanstalk (1952 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Jack and the Beanstalk is a 1952 American family comedy film starring the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. It is a comic revision of the classic Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Mr. Dinkle and Jack look for work at the Cosman Employment Agency. Jack makes advances to Cosman employee Polly, but he is thwarted by the arrival of her boyfriend, a towering police officer. Polly assigns Dinkle and Jack to babysit for Eloise Larkin's brother and infant sister, while Eloise and her fiancé are out for the evening. The babysitting duties are complicated by the fact that Donald is something of a prodigy, as well as a self-proclaimed "problem child". The dullwitted Jack is soon outclassed by the child, and an attempt to lull the boy to sleep by reading the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk (Jack's "favorite novel") aloud fails when Jack stumbles over the larger words. Bemused by Jack's incompetence, Donald reads the story instead -- a role-reversal made complete when Jack falls asleep as Donald reads. In his slumber, Jack dreams that he is the young Jack of the fairy tale. In his dream Jack learns that the Giant, who lives in a castle in the sky, has stolen all of the land's wealth and food. The situation obliges the kingdom's Princess to marry The Prince of a neighboring kingdom, whom she has never met. Jack must also make sacrifices, when his mother sends him to sell the last family possession, their beloved cow "Henry", to the local ...

Abbott & Costello, Joe Kirk, Bingo the Chimp - The Banana Sketch

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Bud and Lou attempt the purchase three bananas for Bingo the Chimp. but Mr Bacciagalupe is using the same trading skills as Bernie Madoff. In real life Joe Kirk was Lou's brother-in-law. Born Ignacio "Nat" Curcuruto, the bulk of Joe Kirk's early film career consisted of playing bit parts, often uncredited, in low budget productions. Typical roles for him were "ethnic" Sicilian-Americans...gangsters, bartenders, bookies, and henchmen. He appeared in several films produced at Monogram Pictures, including "Spooks Run Wild" (1941), "Dick Tracy vs. Crime Inc." (1941), "Mr. Wise Guy" (1942), and "Smart Alecks" (1942). He was occasionally billed as "Joseph I. Kirk", the "I" standing for his birth-name, Ignacio. Through his marriage to Marie Cristillo, the sister of Lou Costello, Kirk secured steady appearances (albeit in small roles) in Abbott and Costello films. His more prominent parts included the pet shop owner in "Rio Rita" (1942), Honest Dan the Bookie in "Here Come the Co-Eds" (1946), the shady real estate agent in "Buck Privates Come Home" (1947) and Dr. Orvilla in "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars" (1953). Kirk continued acting through the late 1950s, with appearances in "The Jackie Robinson Story" (1950), the 1956 Bowery Boys comedy "Hot Shots" and Fritz Lang's drama "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" (1956). He also took small roles in television shows such as "Adventures of Superman", "Sheriff of Cochise" and "US Marshal", before ...

Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd (Preview Clip)

Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd: bit.ly When waiters Rocky and Puddin' Head (Abbott and Costello) accidentally come into possession of a treasure map, they find themselves shanghaied by the notorious pirate, Captain Kidd. Master thespian Charles Laughton was enticed to return to the role he made famous by the prospect of learning how to do proper double-takes from a true master, Mr. Lou Costello. Produced independently by Bud Abbott's production company, the piratical romp was one of the boys' only forays into color. Although the Super Cinecolor process they chose proved to be a far from ideal, this premiere DVD release (remastered from preservation elements created as part of UCLA's 2002 photochemical restoration) is as good as the film has looked in decades. ------ 1000+ Rare films, TV movies, and series on DVD direct from the Studio. www.warnerarchive.com
