The M1 is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of US military forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. It is a well armed, heavily armored, and highly mobile tank designed for modern armored ground warfare.[5] Notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing in at close to 68 short tons. The M1 Abrams entered US service in 1980, replacing the 105 mm gun, full tracked M60 Patton main battle tank.[6] It did, however, serve for over a decade alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. It is the principal main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and since 2007, Australia.

M1A2 Abrams Battle Tank: 1/24 Scale RC Tank
This is the first test of my new RC tank. It shoots Airsoft pellets, but I really don't need that feature. The M1A2 Abrams tank is the most sophisticated battle tank in the world. With its combination of electronics and conventional firepower, it is a most deadly adversary. The first version of this tank went into service in 1980, it replaced the old M60 tank. In addition to its main cannon which is a 120 mm smoothbore, it has three machine guns ranging from .50 cal to the M240 7.62 mm machine gun. What is probably most impressive about the Abrams tank, is its power plant. This tank is powered by a 1500 horsepower multi fuel turbine which is governed to a top cruising speed of 45 mpg, and ungoverned can easily reach speeds of 60 mph; not bad for a tracked vehicle weighing between 60 and 70 tons. Equally as impressive, is the multi fuel capability which allows it to run on just about any fuel it can find on the battlefield. It can run on any grade of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel such as JP4 or JP8, or kerosene. The award honors Mr. Abram for his steadfast commitment to safety and the prevention of eye injuries. An estimated 2.5 million eye injuries occur annually in the US, with 50000 people suffering significant vision loss as a result. Half of these injuries happen in and around the home, in common places like the workshop, garden or garage.
