Kenyan troops fighting al-shabaab militants in Somalia are advancing towards Afmadow town that is controlled by the militant group. The Kenyan troops are teaming up with french naval forces and soldiers from the transitional federal government of Somalia in preparation for the battle for Afmadow and Kismayu that are seen as key to the success of the operation linda nchi. It is emerging that a change of tact by the Al-Shabaab militia is what has slowed down Kenya's operation Linda Nchi. The Kenyan military says plans to capture the Al-Shabaab havens of Kismayu and Afmadow are being delayed as the militants shed their military garbs and seek to blend with civilians. This has in turn posed a challenge to the Kenyan forces, who are keen not to occasion heavy civilian casualties in combat activity. This comes as the police gave amnesty to about 30 Kenyan youth believed to have been indoctrinated by the Al Shabaab militia in exchange for information on their operations in the country. The consignment was destined for Nairobi but was intercepted by police and customs officials at the Mombasa port.
