Family Trip to Aleppo, Syria

Six Syrian sites -- Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra, Bosra, the Krak des Chevaliers, Saladin's Castle, and the ancient villages of northern Syria -- are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list and many more are on the agency's tentative list. During our first visit to Syria as a family, we took this bus trip from Damascus to Aleppo on a very hot day back in July of 2008. In a strange way, Aleppo felt like home despite the appearance of chaos in the center of the city, the intense heat and a few other minor inconveniences. Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since the beginning of time. This very ancient city has managed to remain intact despite all the upheavals, the wars and the devastationg earthquakes that befell this great town. Few cities can match the glory of Aleppo and its 6000 year old history. Its great citadel is said by to be of very high mystical value (Ie, a central Spiritual hub, a hangout for saints, an astrological gateway to other planets and galaxies and a major portal or a wormhole used by (Ahlul Khatwa) or (Jumpers) who are depicted in common Sufi lore as being capable of instantaneously teleporting themselves to anywhere on earth or onto other planets. Aleppo has its outwardly wlid night life, cozy bars and exclusive night clubs. But, at it's core, Aleppo has an inescapable feeling of mystical grandeur and a sense of holiness that permiates its atmosphere. The patriarch Abraham spent part of his ...

Halep (Aleppo) PART16

Youtube: Halep: Aleppo (Arabic: حلب‎ Ḥalab [ˈħalæb], other names) is the largest city in Syria[3] and the capital of Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2301570 (2005 official estimate), expanding to over 2.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant.[4][5] For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo.[6][7][8] Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppo is distinct in identity, architecture and culture, all shaped by a markedly different history and geography. Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC.[9] Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC;[10] and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency.[11] Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia. The city's significance in history has been its location at the end of the Silk Road, which passed through central Asia and Mesopotamia

Questions multiply after Aleppo bombings

www.euronews.net Friday's bomb blasts in Aleppo, Syria's relatively middle-class commercial hub, which killed at least 28 people, have raised a storm of speculation. The bombs targetted military and security service buildings, yet no-one has claimed responsibility for them. The Syrian opposition says it may be the government trying to discredit them, while others say it was elements of the opposition punishing Aleppo for not rising up in revolt or supporting them.

The Magic of Aleppo: Dawn to Dusk

Six Syrian sites -- Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra, Bosra, the Krak des Chevaliers, Saladin's Castle, and the ancient villages of northern Syria -- are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list and many more are on the agency's tentative list. My intention behind posting this video is to highlight the spiritual signifcance of Old Aleppo. I captured some of the photos at dawn, on my way to the congregational prayers at the mosque near my hotel. As it turend out, the mosque housed the shrine of Suhrawardi, one of the great mystics of Islam and the founder of the Illuminationist Philosophy (حكمه الإشراق). Before he was died by starvation at the early age of 38, Suhrawardi produced several major works on Hermeticism, Sufism and Platonism. He authored over 50 books and commentaries including "The Shape of Light", one of his best known books, translated into English by the Sufi master Tosun Baba al Jerrahi. Photos of the city's famous covered souq and its narrow alleyways were taken on a friday (the Muslim Sabbath) when the shops were closed. The clip also features the city's grand citadel which houses the shrine of al Khidr, translated as the Green Man, as known in the Islamic World and in England and in some parts of Europe. דמשק., חלב, חומס, סוריה, זכריה Дамаск Алеппо Сирия

Syria - Bomb Blast Rocks Aleppo City

The death toll from Friday morning's bomb blasts in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, has reached 28, with another 235 injured. The attacks are the worst since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime 11 months ago. Syrian state media said two cars laden with explosives targeted a branch of military intelligence and a security force base. TV channels broadcast graphic images of the blast site. A Syrian TV reporter at the scene said both civilians and security officers were killed, and that the attack occurred near a park where children were playing. The state channel blamed the attack on terrorist groups in the city, and called them an attempt to destabilize the country. Meanwhile, initial reports following the attack say a spokesperson from the Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the attacks. Later statements from the opposition appear to contradict this, accusing Assad's regime of orchestrating the attacks to discredit the opposition and to side step anti-governmental protests that had been planned for Friday. One of the injured described how it all happened. "In the morning we were at the barracks and were getting ready to leave when suddenly the explosion happened. When I regained consciousness I realized that I was injured and was in the hospital."
