"I don't think there's such a thing as a performance-capture or motion-capture actor," Andy Serkis says. "Any actor can do it. I've just embraced it, is all." Indeed he has. The 47-year-old English actor still makes a mark in the occasional "face time" role, starring as rocker Ian Drury in "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" and doing loads of supporting characters on the big and small screen. But he is "the king of performance capture," says David Germaine of the Associated Press. Serkis pretty much invented the sort of acting with his groundbreaking turn as Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" movies. He played the great ape King Kong, has two roles in this winter's performance-capture animated "The Adventures of Tintin," and is reprising Gollum in Peter Jackson's two-part film of "The Hobbit." Mo-Cap Legend Andy Serkis wasn't able to pull of an Oscar nom for his role in 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' but here at HollywoodStreams we wanted to be damned sure his performance was not forgotten. We scoured the film for every tasty acting morsel he melted on the screen with true primate physicality. Actor Andy Serkis is going to be doing much more on the hobbit set than just playing good ole Gollum -- hear what else he's up to next! hey there Hobbit lovers, I'm Chelsea Cannell here with an update on Andy Serkis stepping behind the camera. The actor who will be playing Gollum will apparently also be directing the second Unit on set. The Hollywood reporter has the news about Serki's move behind the camera, something that isn't foreign to him after bouts of directing including performance capture work on a couple video games. Apparently Peter Jackson, the films director of course, asked the actor to head up the second unit via email -- which kinda surprised serkis. But he admits, he knows middle earth well and felt that his director really wanted someone who understood the material and the work ethic needed. The only curve-ball will be the 3D work on this flick -- that is a learning curve for serkis who reveals the use of the dimension will be to help give the film a dramatic point of view. As for Gollum, he says we'll recognize the character who he will be seen in his truest form accodrding to the actor. And its an exciting role to get back in to for Serkis, who admitted that Gollum never really left him!
