TWO IF BY SEA Pelelui and Angaur Release Date: March 8, 1953 ... (Episode #18) In September of 1944, the Island Hopping campaign continued on in to the chain of islands known as Palau. The American forces led by the Marines attacked both Peleliu and Angaur on the way towards the liberation of the Philippines. Peleliu was supposed to be a quick victory for the Americans as they landed on the tiny island on September 14th. Strong dug-in Japanese forces gave the Americans all they could handle as they would die almost to the final man. In the end, the Americans would clear the islands of all Japanese personnel as over 10000 Jap soldiers would lose their lives in the impossible task of defending the islands. Peleliu and Angaur are just two more islands that the Americans had to take in order to help liberate the people of the Philippines. Even a small convoy of 13 naval boats and barges could not stop the Americans as the Japanese tried to reinforce their troops. Thanks to both the 81st Infantry Division and the 1st Marine Division, victory was won in both Peleliu and Angaur.

It was co-produced by the US Army, US Navy, and the US Marines, and directed by a series of combat cameraman — of whom nine became casualties of the battles they were filming. The film is especially noteworthy for its praise of the fighting abilities of Japanese soldiers (a rarity for American propaganda during World War II), and its fast-paced editing. The Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate, was fought between the United States and Japan in the Pacific Theater of World War II, taking place between September 15 and November 25, 1944. The US Forces, consisting of the 1st Marine Division and the Army's 81st Infantry Division, fought to capture an airstrip on the small coral island. US Commander William Rupertus predicted that the island would be secured within three days, but due to Japan's well-crafted fortifications and stiff resistance, the battle lasted for over two months. The battle remains one of the war's most controversial, due to its questionable strategic value and high death toll. When considering the number of men involved, Peleliu had the highest casualty rate of any battle in the Pacific War. Bombardment of Angaur by USS Tennessee, cruisers, and Dauntless dive bombers from USS Wasp began on 11 September 1944. Six days later on 17 September, the US ...

African Americans in World War II: A Legacy of Patriotism and Valor - Part 5 (1997)

1997 www.amazon.com Watch the full film: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com The Mariana and Palau Islands campaign was an offensive launched by United States forces against Imperial Japanese forces in the Mariana Islands and Palau in the Pacific Ocean between June and November, 1944 during the Pacific War. The United States offensive, under the overall command of Chester Nimitz, followed the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign and was intended to neutralize Japanese bases in the central Pacific, support the Allied drive to retake the Philippines, and provide bases for a strategic bombing campaign against Japan. Beginning the offensive, United States Marine Corps and United States Army forces, with support from the United States Navy, executed landings on Saipan in June, 1944. In response, the Imperial Japanese Navy's combined fleet sortied to attack the US Navy fleet supporting the landings. In the resulting aircraft carrier Battle of the Philippine Sea (the so-called "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot") on 19--20 June, the Japanese naval forces were decisively defeated with heavy and irreplaceable losses to their carrier-borne and land-based aircraft. Thereafter, US forces executed landings on Guam and Tinian in July, 1944. After heavy fighting, Saipan was secured in July and Guam and Tinian in August, 1944. The US then constructed airfields on Saipan and Tinian where B-29s were based to conduct strategic bombing missions against the Japanese mainland until the end of World War II ...

Entry from: Koror, Palau Entry Title: "Wow! Palau!" Entry: "Palau was AMAZING! I cannot wait to go back! I recommend this trip to EVERYONE! The diving was phenomenal, the people were great, and the beauty of the island was breathtaking. We were lucky enough to get a package deal with the airlines to stay at the Palau Pacific Resort. What a gorgeous luxurious spot! Palau is one of the most extraordinary diving spots on this planet. Far to the southwest of Micronesia the Republic of Belau (the traditional name) consists of an archipelago of 343 islands, spread north to south over 100 miles form the atoll of Kayangel to the island of Angaur plus five tiny islands, known as the southwest islands. Palau's profuse, unspoiled reefs offer a wealth of marine life, coral formations and wrecks. Dives begin in knee deep water and plunge straight down to depths of 1000 feet and more. Blue holes, huge caverns and an immense variety of rare and exotic marine species are easily accessible in clear water with visibility exceeding 200 feet. Vast numbers, not found anywhere else in the world, of large pelagic predators, sharks, turtles, dolphins and many species of migratory fish gather here at a unique crossroads of three of the world's major ocean currents. SAN DIEGO - KLAUD SURPRISE AUNTIE TESSIE-MITSKO

My ship arrived into San Diego for a 5 day port call and I decided to rent a car and drive to Poway to surprise my aunt (my dad's youngest sister). My cousins and my brother Brendon (at the sink washing plates) helped me out. She's like a mom to me because she was there to me and my brother's lives help raising us and my grandma. I love her very much and you gotta try her cooking... No one can beat mom's home made cooking, ESPECIALLY her fresh coconut bread of Angaur. I hope someday for aunty Tessie-Mitsko and the family to return to Guam or Palau.
