We take a look into the training camps of Anthony 'Million Dollar' Crolla and 'Dirty' Derry Mathews as they prepare to face each other on April 21 in a Manchester v Liverpool, Northwest Derby fight for Crolla's British lightweight title. It will be Crolla's second defence of the belt he won by beating Mathews fellow Liverpudlian John Watson last year. The Manchester champion will have the luxury in this one to be fighting on home turf at at the Oldham Leisure Centre, after fighting on the road in his last few fights. Crolla is in great condition and his training camp has gone better than ever. He has been beating all his previous best times in coach Joe Gallagher's competitive monitored gym, road and track sessions and he is determined to hang onto the belt he deeply treasures. www.britishboxers.co.uk - @britishboxers - Inside Boxing: British lightweight champion Anthony "Million Dollar" Crolla takes on Liverpool's Derry Mathews at Oldham Sports Centre on April 21 in a domestic title fight that has been characterised by mutual respect on both sides. The only bone of contention came when scheduled referee Marcus McDonnell praised Mathews on Twitter. The BBBoC moved quickly, replacing McDonnell with Steve Gray in a bid to stave off any criticism. Although there was no question whatsoever that McDonnell, a top class ref, displayed any bias by Tweeting his respect for the former WBU titlist. As Mathews states in this interview, the official became yet another victim of social media, but his reputation is beyond reproach. As is the reputation of both fighters, they have spoken about each other in glowing terms in the build-up to this one yet are likely to produce a thriller come Saturday. Derry Mathews pre fight Interview and training reel before he meets Anthony Crolla
Current English lightweight champion Derry Mathews believes he will beat British title holder Anthony Crolla tonight when the two Northwest lightweights meet at the Oldham leisure centre in what promises to be one of the fights of the year. Locked away in camp with Danny Vaughan, Mathews has trained like never before. He has spent this training camp working in Liverpool with Vaughan, going back with his original coach after a successful stint with Oliver Harrison in Manchester. In between his home gym sessions Derry has spent time in Scotland running the hills and sparring with top fighters there, including Alex Arthur. The camp also spent two weeks in Lanzarote in the sun, pushing Mathews to the limit, for his first shot at Lonsdale belt. In our 'Inside Boxing' series we go inside camp with Mathews and to speak to him exclusively in the ring and hear how he believes destiny will see him become British champion by dethroning the vastly improved Anthony 'Million Dollar' Crolla on Saturday April 21 and prove all the doubters wrong. Jimmy Lewis has run the Fox ABC in Manchester for over 30 years in which time he has had a host of boxing talent win National title, schoolboy championships, ABA titles and some have gone on to make their name in the professional ranks after learning the game with Mr Lewis. Current British lightweight champion Anthony Crolla came through with Jimmy and now helps him train the lads 3 nights a week. As well as Crolla, who won an ABA title with Jimmy himself, there are many other star names to train with Jimmy at the Fox. Boxers such as Joey Jacobs, Michael Brodie, Craig Watson. Karl Place, Terry Flanagan and their coach Stephen Maylett all started out at the Fox when it was in Ancoats. Other names over the years are too many too list, Jimmy remembers Eric Noye and Kevin Taylor who fought for England at the Olympic games. Jimmy started the original gym above the Fox pub in Blackley in 1978, they then moved to Ancoats in the old Police station. That gym got burned down and so Jimmy moved to Bradford Rd. When they were forced to leave them premises too. Anthony Farnell offered Jimmy the use of his gym on Oldham Rd to train the amateurs at night. We caught up with Jimmy at Arnies gym where he spoke to us about his time in boxing, how it began for him, some of the names who have passed through and current right hand man and British champion Anthony Crolla. Crolla was in training for his fight with Derry Mathews at the time and Jimmy gives his verdict on the fight.

Manchester's 'Million Dollar' Crolla became the New British lightweight Champion on February 12th 2011 beating Liverpool's John Watson at the Olympia, Liverpool. Crolla who was the English super featherweight champion was offered the opportunity to move up to the lightweight division to challenge for the vacant Lonsdale belt, one that Crolla jumped at, putting on a career best performance to knock Watson out in round 9 in what could well go down as one of the best British fights of 2011.
