Appleby Fair is an annual gathering of travellers & gypsies from around the UK & Ireland, it is the largest such event in the World. Of the many thousands of travellers that attend "The Wingate Crew" are great ambassadors of horse dealers & traders from County Durham, Northern England. This film is only a short insight of my two visits to their world, we hadn't ever met before but everyone was friendly & amicable as I filmed there journey & life, with the minimum of intrusion, I even helped yoking up a couple of the horse's, when the lads were short of helping hands. They had camped for the evening at Canney Hill / New Coundon roundabout in County Durham & had utilised a nearby playing field, as grazing for the twenty four horses with them. In the film we see them run the gauntlet of traffic to get to the grazing. Next morning by the time that I had arrived at 7.30am a couple of bow tops had already departed for the next camp site, but I still manage to capture some of the friendly rivalry between the travellers. One thing that surprised me was just how organised everyone was when the time came to move camp, from shunting the caravans to the next camp site, bringing the horses in, to start yoking up, there was even a couple of blacksmith amongst the men and we see one cold shoeing a horse. But most of all these people loved their horses and the baby, and young boys instantly became men when they knew that it was time to get moving once again. The wagon train footage is <b>...</b>

The first day of Appleby Horse Fair 2010 in Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, England. It's a warm, sunny start to the fair which opened at 4am, June 3, 2010. Appleby Fair was first held in 1685. It is the largest horse fair in Britain and amongst the oldest in Europe. By far the busiest days are from the Friday to the Sunday. The event attracts around 10000 Gypsies and travellers and over 30000 other visitors to Appleby. It transforms the town of Appleby for the week, as it normally has a population of around 2500. The Fair has its primary connection with Fair Hill, which is in the ownership of Appleby Town Council.

It's like the aristocracy, the gypsies will be so nice to you, they will treat you with exceptional manners, but you will never be one of them. If you see yourself on the video and would like an image, please contact me on the email address at the beginning of the video. Appleby Fair runs for a week in June, ending on the 2nd wednesday in June, but these days most of the activity for spectators is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. It is probably the best known of the horse fairs attended by Romany families travelling to meet up with old friends and conduct business. It is world famous, the largest of its kind in the world, and attracts a huge gathering. It has existed as a fair for horse trading since 1685, under the protection of a charter granted by James II. The field on the outskirts of Appleby originally known as Gallows Hill, due to its usage in earlier times is now called Fair Hill and looks over the town of Appleby. During the Fair, horses may be found everywhere - in the river, on its banks, along the roadsides or tethered outside hotels and shops. Young people wash the horses in the River Eden and are then ready to show them off. The tradition of racing and trotting the horses along Flashing Lane takes place throughout the day. Appleby is best known of all the horse fairs in the UK. For Romany & travelling families to meet up with old friends and do business. The largest of its kind in the world, and attracts huge visitors to Cumbria It has existed as a fair for horse-trading since 1685, under the protection of a charter granted by James II. Lee Fair is held in the Parish of Woodkirk, otherwise known as the Township of West Ardsley. Woodkirk, the parish church, is dedicated to St. Mary and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, when West Ardsley was part of the Manor of Wakefield. Between 1121 and 1127, the church was given by the Lord of the Manor, the second Earl of Warren, to Nostell Priory, about 9 miles away on the far side of Wakefield. It became a small monastery with a few resident canons. Before his death in 1135, King Henry I had given the Priory a Royal Charter for fairs at Woodkirk, though some may have been held earlier.
