The Face of Eleanor of Aquitaine (Photoshop Reconstruction)
*Project requested by user/WinefrideofWales She was one of the most powerful women of the Middle Ages. As the daughter of the Duke of Aquitaine, the duchess (born 1122?) received a first-class education and was brought up in one of Europe's most aristocratic courts. The duchess became an heiress at the age of 15 after the death of her only brother and her father in 1137. Eleanor married Louis VII of France that same year and in the course of time bore him two daughters. Despite this, their marriage was fraught with problems, which was compounded by the fact that Louis was determined to have a son as an heir. Five years after Louis's failed crusade to Constantinople and Jerusalem, he and Eleanor divorced in 1152. Surprisingly rapidly (at least to modern eyes) Eleanor married Henry of Anjou only two months after the divorce to Louis VII. Henry was soon crowned King of England in 1154, and with Eleanor at his side became father to three daughters and five sons in all over the next 20 years. Eleanor was very much involved in the running of Henry's empire, making frequent trips between their estates in England and France. Disaster struck in 1173 when two of Eleanor's sons involved her in a scheme against their father, Henry, which Henry caught onto and had Eleanor subsequently imprisoned. She had to wait until Henry's death in 1189 for her son, Richard I, to order her release. Afterwards, Eleanor continued to embroil herself in government matters, even though she was in her <b>...</b>

Aquitaine (Occitan: Aquitània; Basque: Akitania), archaic Guyenne/Guienne (Occitan: Guiana), is one of the 26 regions of France, in the south-western part of metropolitan France, along the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees mountain range on the border with Spain. In the Middle Ages it was a kingdom and later a duchy, with boundaries considerably larger than the modern ones. It comprises the 5 departments of Dordogne, Lot et Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes and Gironde.In 781, Charlemagne decided to proclaim his son Louis King of Aquitaine within the Carolingian Empire, ruling over a realm comprising the Duchy of Aquitaine and the Duchy of Vasconia (Et 3 Calend Augusti habuit concilium magnum in Aquis, et constituit duos filius sans reges Pippinum et Clotarium, Pippinum super Aquitaniam et Wasconiam). He suppressed various Vascon uprisings, even venturing into the lands of Pamplona past the Pyrenees after ravaging the Gascony, with a view to imposing his authority in the Vasconia south of Pyrenees too. According to his biography, he achieved everything he wanted and after staying overnight in Pamplona, on his way back his army was attacked in Roncesvaux in 812, but didn't suffer defeat thanks to the precautions he had taken. Seguin (Sihiminus, Semen...), count of Bordeaux and Duke of Vasconia, seemed to have attempted a detachment from the Frankish central authority on Charlemagne's death. THE LION IN WINTER 'Eleanor's Arrival' - John Barry
Behind the great stone walls of an English castle, a powerful empire is in crisis. Three sons struggle to win their father's favor - as well as his crown. King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his queen, Eleanor (Hepburn), engage in a battle of royal wits that pits elder son Richard (Anthony Hopkins) against his brothers, while the cunning King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) takes advantage of the internal fracturing in his bid to destroy their kingdom. Katherine Hepburn is on Oscar-winning form and sparring verbally with Oscar-nominated Peter O'Toole in this adaptation of James Goldman's play. John Barry's beautiful, melancholic score also won an Oscar. In 'Eleanor's Arrival' the chorus is used to sing Latin text with the orchestra - a very beautiful track and quite different from the rest of the score. Here there are some thematic oboe and trumpet solos and a wonderful interplay between female and male chorus.
