Aristotle Part 1

Aristotle is one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy. He was the first to create a comprehensive system of Western philosophy, encompassing morality and aesthetics, logic and science, politics and metaphysics. Aristotle's views on the physical sciences profoundly shaped medieval scholarship, and their influence extended well into the Renaissance, although they were ultimately replaced by modern physics. In the biological sciences, some of his observations were only confirmed to be accurate in the nineteenth century. His works contain the earliest known formal study of logic, which were incorporated in the late nineteenth century into modern formal logic

Martha Nussbaum on Aristotle: Section 1

In this program, the far-reaching philosophical ideas of Plato's star pupil are examined by noted Brown University professor Martha Nussbaum. Aristotle overcomes Plato's dualism of the intelligible and sensible worlds with his principle of inseparable nature of eternal matter and form. The principles of potentiality and actuality are examined, along with Aristotle's theory of the four causes—material, formal, efficient, and final—which account for changes in all things. These theories of constancy and change are credited with the progress of scientific inquiry over the ages.

Aristotle Politics

The Politics, by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, is one of the most influential texts in political philosophy. In it, Aristotle explores the role that the political community should play in developing the virtue of its citizens. One of his central ideas is that "Man is a political animal," meaning that people can only become virtuous by active participation in the political community. Aristotle also criticizes his teacher Plato, classifies and evaluates six different types of constitutions and political institutions, and describes his vision of the ideal state. Aristotle's views on women and slavery are unenlightened by today's standards, but his work remains enduring and relevant to this day.

Aristotle versus Nietzsche

Dueling Philosophers, "On Guard!" A quote by Aristotle in his "Politics," to which Friedrich Nietzsche responded in his "Twilight of the Idols." A poetic statement of how I see myself: Residing between man and superman, suspended on a rope over an abyss. Or maybe hanging from a bungee cord...? I first came across this quote in: "A Nietzsche Reader," Penguin Classics, 1977. I'd already known the Aristotle bit, then found Nietzsche's rebuttal -- purely by chance -- while browsing through it in a bookstore. It gave me goosebumps! I should still read "Twilight of the Idols," however. ^_^ Music Excerpt: "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky Act II, Scene (Moderato) Orchestre symphonique de Montreal Charles Dutoit Copyright 1992 The Decca Record Company, London. fnord ^_^

Oh, I didn't believe to see you so quickly extinct, o flowers; you have passed away like love that one day only lasted. Perhaps new life my tears will bring to you but to revive love my tears, o no, cannot. O, inconceivable human thought a wave of contentment I am full: In my feelings I can hardly believe you assure me, o my treasure(darling). O, embrace me, and always together, always united in a single hope, of the world, we live in we will make a heaven of love. vkontakte.ru
