Fallen Army Ranger Sgt. Tanner Higgins Returns Home
April 23, 2012 Greenville, TX at 1100 hours the chartered plane, carrying the remains of Sgt. Tanner S. Higgins, arrived to a Heroes' Welcome. The family and friends were joined by local military active duty personnel, law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue departments, veteran groups, Patriot Guard Riders of North and East Texas. After the plane disembarked a US flag draped wood coffin, family members gathered to welcome their loved one home and held hands while praying. Once the family was ready, members of the 1st Battalion Army Ranger Honor Guard conducted a dignified transfer on the tarmac from the plane to a waiting white hearse, flanked by a squad of US Army Ranger Honor Guard. The procession was led by local police, fire & rescue trucks followed by 200 hundred motorcycles with members of the Patriot Guard Riders from North and East Texas. As the procession left the airfield the roads were lined by citizens from around the community of Greenville, and a short trip on an interstate highway to Sulphur Springs and finally ending in the town of Winnsboro. Along the route the roads were lined with local citizens displaying their respects and gratitude for the sacrifice made on their behalf. It was at times moving and touching. Once the procession made its way to its final destination the honor guard conducted a dignified ceremony as the family and attendees gathered around the entrance to the funeral home where his family received guests. After the Vietnam War, division and brigade commanders determined that the US Army needed elite, rapidly deployable light infantry, so in 1974 General Creighton Abrams constituted the 1st Ranger Battalion; eight months later, the 2nd Ranger Battalion was constituted, and in 1984 the 3rd Ranger Battalion and their regimental headquarters were created. In 1986, the 75th Ranger Regiment was formed and their military lineage formally authorized. The 75th Ranger Regiment, comprising three battalions, is the premier light-infantry of the US Army. It is the deadly combination of special operations and elite airborne light infantry. The Regiment is a flexible, highly trained and rapid light infantry unit specialized to be employed against any special operations targets. All Rangers—whether they are in the 75th Ranger Regiment, or Ranger School, or both—are taught to live by the Ranger Creed. Army Ranger Widow Confronts Rumsfeld Over Lies That Convinced Her Husband to Join Military
DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! speaks with the widow of a US Army Ranger who confronted former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld about her husband's suicide on Saturday. Ashley Joppa-Hagemann introduced herself to Rumsfeld during a book-signing by handing him a copy of her husband's funeral program at a base south of Tacoma, Washington. She says Rumsfeld inspired her husband to join the Army after 9/11, but he later became disillusioned with the reasons for the war. Her husband, 25-year-old Staff Sergeant Jared Hagemann, killed himself ahead of what his wife says was his eighth deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. His body was found on June 28, 2011, at the Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington State. More than 18000 soldiers returned to the Joint Base Lewis McChord from combat tours last year. And while the Army says it is trying to shore up mental health services there, Joppa-Hagemann questions its success. "I want to confront the man whose 'lies' led my husband to join the military and some other soldiers -- so many other soldiers," says Joppa-Hagemann. "That is what I wanted to do and what I did." Merrill near Dahlonega, Georgia by the 5th Ranger Training Battalion. During the Mountain Phase, students are taught military mountaineering and techniques for employing a platoon in combat in mountains. They further develop command ability, and controlling a platoon through planning, preparing, and executing combat missions. The Ranger student continues learning how to sustain himself and his subordinates in the mountains. As with any of the Special Operations units in the US military, to become a Ranger takes endurance, stamina, intelligence and mental toughness. The training is broken up into three phases: Fort Benning Phase, Mountain Phase, and Florida Phase. The Benning Phase is executed in two parts and lasts for a total of 20 days. As with most Special Operations units, the first phase is very physical.
