Arturo Gatti v Gabriel Ruelas

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v Gabriel Ruelas. 04/10/1997. Junior Lightweight Title (3rd defense of Gatti) Location: Caesar's Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Ruelas warned in Round 1 for a low blow. Ruelas warned again in Round 3 for a low blow. Ruelas was staggered by an overhand right early in the 4th Round. Gatti hurt by a tremendous left uppercut from Ruelas at 2:35 into Round 4. Ruelas down at 2:03 into Round 5 from a left hook as both fighters traded punches. He did make it to his feet, but referee Benji Esteves chose to call an end to the bout. Gatti suffered a cut under his left eye. Fight was named Ring Magazine Knockout of the Year and Ring Magazine Fight of the Year for 1997. The announcers labeled the 5th Round as a "battle of uppercuts" as both fighters walked forward and traded clean shots. Pernell Whitaker entered the ring after the fight to congratulate Gatti.

Arturo Gatti v Angel Manfredy

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v Angel Manfredy. 17/01/1998. Convention Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. Ringside doctor stops fight due to a Gatti cut. Gatti was knocked down in the 3rd round. On Saturday night, Arturo Gatti looked as if he had stepped out of one of those grainy, black and white 1950's B movies on boxing. A gaping gash above his left eye was streaming blood, his other eye was a slit visible through a puffy pillow, and Gatti was still slinging punches at Angel Manfredy. Finally, the referee, Wayne Hedgepeth, and the ring physician, Dr. Domenic Coletta, had seen enough by the eighth round and stopped the lightweight fight. For Gatti, who lives in Jersey City, the only thing that distinguished this fight at the Atlantic City Convention Center from almost all his others was that he lost. In the brutal and painful business of boxing, Gatti, 25, is the ultimate warrior, and his face usually pays the highest price. Gatti (29-2) skipped the post-fight news conference on Saturday night and went to the Atlantic City Medical Center to have his eye treated. At the hospital, Gatti ran into Manfredy (23-2-1), who was there to have X-rays on his right hand, which he broke in the fifth round. Of course, they agreed that they want to fight again as soon as their wounds heal. It took 20 stitches (13 outside and 7 inside) to close the wound over Gatti's eye. And Manfredy's broken hand will keep him out of action for 90 days. Some people wondered whether the Reyes ...

Arturo Gatti v Floyd Mayweather. part 1 (Build up to Fight)

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather. Super Lightweight Title (3rd defense of Gatti) 25/06/2005. Location: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. This bout had been in the making for over a year and a half. Gatti and Mayweather were both stars in thier respective weight divisions and after Gatti won the WBC title in January of 2004 Mayweather was the WBC #1 ranked contender. Gatti had requested several voluntary defenses from the WBC before finally agreeing to fight Floyd Mayweather. The fight between the two fighters was billed as a superfight. It would be the first time that Floyd Mayweather headlined a PPV event. Before the fight there was plenty of trash talk between the two fighters and Floyd had repeatedly referred to Gatti as a "C" fighter. When it came to fight time, Mayweather's handspeed was simply overwhelming as he landed three and four punch combinations at will. Gatti was down in the first round and took a vicious one-sided beating for the next five rounds before his cornerman, James (Buddy) McGirt, decided to stop it after the 6th round. Before the fight, HBO analyst Max Kellerman called it the biggest Pay-Per-View mismatch since Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson.

Micky Ward talks about Arturo Gatti

Arturo Gatti v Micky Ward I. part 1.

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v "Irish" Micky Ward. 18/05/2002. Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut. Not much left to say about this fight that hasnt already been said. By Jack Dutton: Who would've guessed, that on a May Saturday night, 2002, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Ct, in which no championship belt was up for grabs, we would observe a display of heart, courage and shear tenacity not seen in a handful of title fights which have occurred in the past decade. The fight, as any true boxing fan should know, was the start of the Gatti-Ward trilogy and that Saturday night in May would become heralded as not only candidate for fight of the year, nor decade but bout of the century. Commentators immediately claimed the fight to be a throwback to the bouts of the 1940s and 1950s fights, the slugfests often the golden age where the non-heavyweight divisions were ruled by the likes of LaMotta, Graziano and Robinson (who was much more of a puncher than people think -- just look at his 108 knockout record!). Back then fights like Ward-Gatti were seen on a monthly, if not weekly, basis, and it was this glimpse back to when boxing was at its best which warms us to the three bouts fought by the two fighters. Quite why this fight, and the two that followed were so similar to this long gone age of the 40s and 50s can be seen not only in the fighters' refusal to give up but many other aspects that offer a strange sense of déjà vu whilst watching them. What stands out clearly was the ...

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v Wilson Rodriguez. 23/03/1996. Junior Lightweight Title (1st defense of Gatti) Location: MSG Theater, New York, New York, USA. Gatti was down in round two. After losing a point for low blows in round 5, Gatti floors Rodriguez with a hook to the body during the last minute of the round. After landing many borderline body blows in round six, Gatti knocks out Rodriguez with a left hook to the head. It would take more than a minute for Rodriguez to get off the canvas and reach his corner. By the end of the fight, Gatti was sporting a knob-like puff under the right eye.

Arturo "THUNDER" Gatti vs. Tracy Harris Patterson II. (2nd meeting) 22/02/1997. Junior Lightweight Title (Gatti's 2nd defense) Location: Convention Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Patterson put Gatti down with vicious left hook to the body in 1st round, but referee Rudy Battle ruled that punch as a lowblow. Gatti penalized 1 point in the 8th round for repeated low blows. Gatti scored a knockdown in the 9th round, though replay clearly showed it was a slip. Gatti was puffed under each eye, and bled in a bruise under his left eye. He did puff up both of Patterson's eyes.

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v Christino Suero. 20/6/1993. Location: Harrah's Marina Hotel Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Weights: Gatti 130 lbs., Suero 132 lbs. Fight was on the under card of Tony Thornton vs. Frank Minton and on the same night that the Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns to claim their 3rd consecutive NBA Championship. Suero took a knee at 1:41 of Round 3 after being hit with a left hook to the body. Grimacing in pain, he did not make it to his feet prior to the 10 count. Despite his losing record, Christino Suero was a game fighter. He was active and also showed sound defensive skills against the favored Gatti. In the 3rd Round, however, Gatti began to land more solid power punches. Prior to the left hook to the body, Gatti also landed a solid right uppercut that likely contributed to Suero taking the knee.

Arturo "Thunder" Gatti v "Irish" Micky Ward II. 23/11/2002. Location: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. All great fights deserve a rematch, and that saying is no more solid than in this fight. This time around, like most rematch's they will not live up to the first encounter. Though it won't be far from it. Gatti has to drill box, box, box inside his head before instinct takes over and he's fighting Mickys fight. Arturo won't want to relive Wards body attacks that crippled him in pain in round nine, making him take a count. This was the round that judge Richard Flaherty controversially scored 10 - 7 giving the fight to Ward by one point. Had Flaherty scored the round 10 - 8, along with the other judges the fight would have been a draw. Gatti runs a greater risk if he fights Micky on the inside. Ward's plan will be to go right at Gatti and draw him into this style of fight, he knows Arturo's reputation and he will be hoping bravado will spark Gatti's "Thunder". This is very much a mental battle as well as physical as each fighter looks to create the rhythm. Ward has trouble against fighters who Box him and this was clear when Arturo took the Boxers approach. Micky is a come forward fighter who loves to fight up close.
