Japanese spacecraft 'Hayabusa' - spectacular re-entry into Earth's atmosphere (viewed at 39000')

After travelling six billion kilometres in seven years, the Japanese space probe Hayabusa (meaning Peregrine Falcon) incinerated on re-entry after jettisoning a capsule expected to contain the first asteroid dust ever collected. The capsule parachuted to Earth near Woomera, the Australian Defence Force facility supporting the western world's largest defence systems test and evaluation range Hayabusa, the $US200 million ($235.74 million) project launched in 2003, landed on the asteroid in 2005 and is believed to have collected samples of material from the surface that may shed light on the solar system's origin and evolution. Scientists hope to study how and when the asteroid was formed, its physical properties, what other bodies it may have been in contact with, and how solar wind and radiation have affected it. Hayabusa was originally due to return to Earth in 2007, but a series of technical glitches -- including a deterioration of its ion engines, broken control wheels, and the malfunctioning of batteries -- forced it to miss its window to manoeuvre into the Earth's orbit until this year. If Hayabusa is indeed carrying asteroid samples, it would be only the fourth space sample return in history -- including moon matter collected by the Apollo missions, comet material by Stardust, and solar matter from the Genesis mission. Venus, Earth and Mars: Atmosphere and the Myth the Habitable Zone

Many have used the concept of the habitability zone to explain Earth's temperate climate and the extreme heat and cold of Venus and Mars respectively. However, analysing the atmospheric make-up of each of the planets, the habitability is not based solely on distance from the sun, but heat retention, another factor helping us understand whether life is in fact common in the universe. Your hands are full of tears, We've been waiting for this time for years. Goodbye astronaut. You're already gone, high up in sky, Where noone can see you now. You're already gone, high up in sky, Where noone can hear you. Don't care for me, I'll be alright, It's just a space. Don't think on me, I can't handle all these thoughts, They're killing me. Are you traveling by the stereo, Through the endless darkness. Listen to completely silence. When are you gonna tell the truth, What has really happened to you. Have you seen outlines of death. I'm not coming home tonight, I'm gonna stay here outside. Oh, god it's beautiful, World so magnificent. I'm not coming home tonight, I'm gonna stay here outside. Atmosphere of SuperEarth GJ1214b - Eliza Kempton (SETI Talks)

SETI Talks archive: seti.org Astronomers currently know of over 500 planets orbiting distant stars beyond the confines of our solar system. Of these 500 "extrasolar" planets, most are large gas-rich planets, similar to Jupiter or Saturn. However, more recently, due to improvements in discovery techniques and instrumentation, astronomers have started to discover much smaller extrasolar planets, which are only slightly larger (or more massive) than the Earth. This new class of planets, which have masses of 1-10 times that of the Earth, have come to be known as super-Earths. Super-Earths are particularly interesting because planets in this mass range are not present in our solar system, and they therefore represent a fundamentally new class of planets for astronomers to study. Recently, the first observations of a super-Earth's atmosphere were obtained. They reveal a unique planetary atmosphere that may bear some similarities to objects in our solar system but requires further study. In this talk Dr. Kempton will begin by presenting an overview of extrasolar planet research, focusing in on what we know about super-Earths. She will then move on to describing what we know about extrasolar planet atmospheres. She will finish by revealing the first observations of the atmosphere of a super-Earth, and she will explain some of the challenges to interpreting these observations.

The 4-year prime mission would include a two-year Saturn tour, a 2-month Titan aero-sampling phase, and a 20-month Titan orbit phase. The Titan Saturn System Mission (TSSM) was officially created in January 2009 by the merging of the ESA's Titan and Enceladus Mission (TandEM) with NASA's Titan Explorer 2007 study, although plans to combine both concepts date at least back to early 2008 TSSM was competing against the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) proposal for funding since then, however in February 2009 it was announced that NASA/ESA had given EJSM priority ahead of TSSM, although TSSM will continue to be studied for a later launch date, probably sometime in the 2020s. Detailed assessment reports of the mission elements as well as a specific concept for the lake landing-module called Titan Mare Explorer (TiME) have been released in February and October 2009 ...

Hayabusa's Fiery Homecoming Ends Seven-Year Journey

A team of astronomers and scientists from NASA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and other organizations had a front row seat as the Hayabusa spacecraft made a fiery return to Earth's atmosphere on June 12, 2010. Special cameras and other imaging instruments aboard NASA's DC-8 airborne laboratory captured the Japanese spacecraft's high-speed re-entry over an unpopulated area of central Australia. Hayabusa completed a seven-year journey to return a sample of the asteroid Itokawa. Scientists aren't sure a sample was obtained; if they do find one, it'll weigh no more than a gram.

Their controls would freeze up, their planes would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, seven hundred and fifty miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the sound barrier. (from the movie "The Right Stuff" - 1983) Fly me to the stars. Who now is knowing this famous song from Frank Sinatra? You can do this inside of your dreams, but also you can do it as a reality. In the last 10 years we used some jets to do high altitude flights (MIG-25, MIG 31), but currently one jet in the world is there with whom you can fulfill your dream The Russian MIG-29. You will fly on an altitude max. 23 km (75000ft) and you will be (beside your pilot) the highest flying human on the day of your flight. So, if you dreamed so long about that, stop it now! 40 % OZONE loss Rt. after nuclear power planet. Japan Earthquake 4/11

Bible books I meant to state where MICAH NAHUM HABAKKUK Not a look read. By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press John Heilprin, Associated Press -- Tue Apr 5, 11:55 am ET GENEVA -- The protective ozone layer in the Arctic that keeps out the sun's most damaging rays — ultraviolet radiation — has thinned about 40 percent this winter, a record drop, the UN weather agency said Tuesday. The Arctic's damaged stratospheric ozone layer isn't the best known "ozone hole" — that would be Antarctica's, which forms when sunlight returns in spring there each year. But the Arctic's situation is due to similar causes: ozone-munching compounds in air pollutants that are chemically trigged by a combination of extremely cold temperatures and sunlight. The losses this winter in the Arctic's fragile ozone atmospheric layer strongly exceeded the previous seasonal loss of about 30 percent, the UN's World Meteorological Organization in Geneva said. It blamed the combination of very cold temperatures in the stratosphere, the second major layer of the Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and ozone-eating CFCs from aerosol sprays and refrigeration. "This is pretty sudden and unusual," said Bryan Johnson, an atmospheric chemist who works in the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. news.yahoo.com california radition level testing www.youtube.com 'No way out of waste water dumping to keep core cool at Fukushima' www.youtube.com MILES ...

NASA | ATREX Studies Earth's Ultra-High Super Wind

High in the sky, 60 to 65 miles above Earth's surface, winds rush through a little understood region of Earth's atmosphere at speeds of 200 to 300 miles per hour. Lower than a typical satellite's orbit, higher than where most planes fly, this upper atmosphere jet stream makes a perfect target for a particular kind of scientific experiment: the sounding rocket. Some 35 to 40 feet long, sounding rockets shoot up into the sky for short journeys of eight to ten minutes, allowing scientists to probe difficult-to-reach layers of the atmosphere. In March, NASA will launch five such rockets in approximately five minutes to study these high-altitude winds and their intimate connection to the complicated electrical current patterns that surround Earth. First noticed in the 1960s, the winds in this jet stream shouldn't be confused with the lower jet stream located around 30000 feet, through which passenger jets fly and which is reported in weather forecasts. This rocket experiment is designed to gain a better understanding of the high-altitude winds and help scientists better model the electromagnetic regions of space that can damage man-made satellites and disrupt communications systems. The experiment will also help explain how the effects of atmospheric disturbances in one part of the globe can be transported to other parts of the globe in a mere day or two. The five sounding rockets, known as the Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX), will launch from NASA's Wallops ...
