Audi's future e-tron models will cover long distances powered by practically silent electric motors. To ensure that pedestrians in urban settings will hear them, the brand has developed a synthetic solution: Audi e-sound. Sound is an especially exciting aspect of a vehicle. Although it can be described in physical terms, there is no substitute for experiencing it firsthand. A car's sound is emotional, not intellectual. Although we consciously register a car's sounds only occasionally while on the road, they are always there -- playing a crucial role in the driving experience. Sounds send signals. Low-range frequencies suggest power and composure, while mid-range frequencies emit sportiness and agility. In a series-production Audi, a combustion engine currently supplies the music. Conversely, the motor in an electric-powered e-tron is not an option, as it is too quiet and its high frequencies are not exactly melodious. Audi's e-tron models will therefore feature a synthetic sound signature. Rudolf Halbmeir teamed up with his colleagues Axel Brombach and Dr. Lars Hinrichsen to create it. The e-sound by Audi may be artificial, but it is authentic. In fact, the e-tron itself generates its sound by the millisecond. Dr. Lars Hinrichsen, the expert for hardware and software, explains: "Data relating to the electric motor's rotational speed, vehicle speed, loads, and other parameters is continuously supplied by the vehicle to the control unit. Audi's first big motor sport program in 1981 was based on the quattro permanent four-wheel drive. After numerous championship wins and the banning of four-wheel drive in FIA circuit-based racing series for the 1998 season, a model from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm with four driven wheels now returns to the race tracks -- the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. Four-wheel drive in an LMP1 sports car: Audi, in its 30 year plus motor sport history, once again makes a pioneering step as the brand with the four rings becomes the first automobile manufacturer ever to field a diesel hybrid at Le Mans. "To develop the hybrid technology for Le Mans is at least as ambitious and challenging as our diesel project was in its early stages," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Test drive of MTM's Amazing Supercharged B7 Audi RS4 Clubsport! The MTM RS4 Clubsport. What praise can we possibly give to the regular RS4 that hasn't already been said? It's simply a phenomenal and highly-capable 4-door unlike anything else available. In stock form it's good enough to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife quicker than any other 4-door sports sedan on the market. It's exceptionally luxurious and well equipped. It also comes with the tried and proven all weather conquering quattro driveline now with a rearward torque bias. It's not perfect to all people though. And so where there's room for improvement MTM steps to the proverbial plate. The centerpiece of the MTM RS4 Clubsport package is the liquid-to-air intercooled, Lysolm-type, belt driven supercharger that resides directly underneath the carbon fiber bulge on the hood and feeds the car with 0.45 bar (6.5 psi) of fresh air. This cleverly designed package sits smack dab between the cylinder heads within the "V" of Audi's 4.2 liter V8 and boosts power levels to a very impressive 535 horsepower and 428 ft-lbs of torque. The engine internals and compression ratio remains 100% stock. A special carbon fiber vent on the hood gives extra clearance to the supercharger and helps keep underhood temperatures checked. The blower assembly completely replaces the stock variable length intake manifold. It's important to note that the RS4 Clubsport is still a prototype, meaning it is quite clearly a work in progress. Audi is developing a production plan for the Quattro Concept as the automaker considers building a limited series of the model, according to a report by Autocar. "We are rethinking standard processes to make it possible. We know how to engineer it already," said Stefan Reil, chief of development at Quattro GmbH, Audi's performance division, in an interview with the British car magazine. The Quattro Concept is based on the RS5 and was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Audi Quattro all-wheel drive system. It is powered by a 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. The 2012 Audi A7 may very well be the best-looking car Audi has ever built. And it's close to being the best Audi built, period. There isn't a weak spot in its design. In person it's sexy from any angle, and the interior is one of Audi's best and most logical. The navigation now uses Google Maps, and that alone makes the system worth the extra money in my opinion. Performance is stout, if not stirring: the A7 uses a 310-hp version of the S4's supercharged 3.0L V6. It goes from 0-60mph in around 5.5 seconds, which is darn quick...but it does it in such a smooth, subdued fashion that I hardly noticed. It's very difficult to keep your freeway speeds under 90mph in this car. There's a well-designed hatchback with lots of tie-downs and a monstrous opening that extends the functionality of the cargo area beyond its nominal capacity of 24.5 cubic feet—six more than a BMW X5! The A7 is fast, fun to drive, and practical with the huge hatch and standard Quattro all-wheel-drive. It's a sporty luxury car you can drive quickly in nearly any kind of weather and get decent mileage doing so (18 city/28 highway mpg). That makes its as-tested price of $66220 seem like a real steal.
