Augmented Reality Sandbox with Real-Time Water Flow Simulation

Video of a sandbox equipped with a Kinect 3D camera and a projector to project a real-time colored topographic map with contour lines onto the sand surface. The sandbox lets virtual water flow over the surface using a GPU-based simulation of the Saint-Venant set of shallow water equations. We (the UC Davis WM Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences, www.keckcaves.org) built this for an NSF-funded project on informal science education. These AR sandboxes will be set up as hands-on exhibits in science museums, such as the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) or Lawrence Hall of Science. Project home page idav.ucdavis.edu The sandbox is based on the original idea shown in this video: www.youtube.com The water flow simulation is based on the work of Kurganov and Petrova, "a second-order well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme for the Saint-Venant system."

Mobile innovation company SPRXmobile launches Layar, worlds first mobile Augmented Reality browser, which displays real time digital information on top of reality (of) in the camera screen of the mobile phone. While looking through the phones camera lens, a user can see houses for sale, popular bars and shops, jobs, healthcare providers and ATMs. The first country to launch Layar is The Netherlands. Launching partners are local market leaders ING (bank), funda (realty website), Hyves (social network), Tempo-team (temp agency) and Zekur.nl (healthcare provider). How it works Layar is derived from location based services and works on mobile phones that include a camera, GPS and a compass. Layar is first avaliable for handsets with the Android operating system (the G1 and HTC Magic). It works as follows Starting up the Layar application automatically activates the camera. The embedded GPS automatically knows the location of the phone and the compass determines in which direction the phone is facing. Each partner provides a set of location coordinates with relevant information which forms a digital layer. By tapping the side of the screen the ...

ADmented Reality - Google Glasses Remixed with Google Ads

When I saw Google had somehow forgotten to include any ads in their Project Glass promotional video I just couldn't resist fixing that oversight for them. So here is my slightly more realistic version of Google's augmented reality glasses - now featuring contextual Google Ads! Of course I'm exaggerating a bit here for visual effect to mimic the modern web browsing experience. Google will probably not be this obvious with their interface but there's no question that the company will be gathering a massive amount of extremely personal data based on what you look at and for how long. The company may use this data mining to build even more detailed consumer profiles and/or sell über targeted ads. Because let's face it, Google is really just a massive advertising company at heart. Fun Fact: All of the AdWords used are actual Google ad returns found via Google searches based on the dialog, situation or setting in the original video. Yes "Music, Stop!" does actually return an ad asking if you would like to listen to music. Google really can't be too annoyed at this remix because after all I'm just putting Google Ads overtop of a Google video on Google's owned video hosting service. See the original Google video: www.youtube.com UPDATE: This remix appears to have gone viral with over half a million views in 5 days. I'm happy the video has been part of the changing media story around Google's "augmented reality" product from the initial uncritical view to a slightly more skeptical ...

SAP HANA, the fastest Database technology, presents a conundrum: we can't just animate a pie chart to demonstrate its capabilities. We believe this kind of processing speed will enable and encourage a new kind of Human Computer Interface. Keytree Labs have developed CEO Vision to prove this point. It's called a "Spatial Operating Environment" and it's built using: - Augmented Reality - Microsoft Kinect - And not least SAP HANA You don't need the mouse, the keyboard or a screen to visualise and interrogate huge datasets in real time. TEDxTheWoodlands2011-Jennifer Myers- Augmented Reality

Jennifer Myers - Augmented Reality Jennifer Myers is an adjunct instructor of biotechnology at Lone Star College -- Montgomery in The Woodlands, Texas. Jennifer is also a Ph.D. student in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University. Her specialty is educational technologies, including social media and games. She has a Master's in Teaching from Tufts University and has worked professionally in molecular and cellular biology at Dartmouth College. In addition, Jennifer has worked with Steven Caney Design, assisting with the research and development of Steven Caney's books that promote creative play and learning. Most recently, she was the researcher for Steven Caney's Ultimate Building Book. Her current research investigates the relationship between play and transformative learning, especially as it applies to science education and professional development. Digital games are of particular interest because of the ways this form of play can promote systems thinking, problem solving, self-efficacy, and allow for embedded, authentic assessment. Jennifer hopes that more people will embrace play as an essential component of learning and development.

Augmented Reality Video Games

www.lockergnome.com - Augmented reality has been a dream of geeks for decades. The idea of putting on a set of glasses or having a chip implanted in your head that creates a virtual HUD augmenting everything you see sounds like something right out of science fiction. Until recently, it has been. Now, augmented reality apps are available for smartphones and companies are racing to see which one can create interfaces that can exist everywhere from a set of eyeglasses to contacts you can actually put on your eyes. One of these apps hopes to turn your city into a giant video game. Borglar gives you the ability to see and collect prizes and special deals at stores you are actually near. Collecting coins and medallions as you play will also allow you to win real-world prizes offered by sponsors of the app. Matt Ryan spoke briefly with Dave Sanguinetti, the President of Borglar, to find out exactly what Borglar is and why folks should give it a try. Intel, LEGO, & Metaio Demonstrate Augmented Reality at IDF2011

The concept is simple, we've all been there - LEGO is a wonderful toy, allowing kids to unfurl their imagination & creativity - but the boxes with LEGO inside are only so detailed - they are simply 2 dimensional pictures. So, the quandary is: How to you get a better appreciation for how the final project would look? Sure, a store could have some of the models assembled, but some stores could have as many as 200 LEGO projects on sale. Not only is that a lot of shelf space (which then displaces space for merchandise), but there also the cost & time for the store to assemble the pieces that eat into a store's profitability. And customers still won't be able to see it in "full" 3 Dimensions because the store will likely have to put it behind glass so that people don't pick it up every day, thereby risking breakage or the losing of pieces. So what is a store to do? Riding into the Rescue is: Augmented Reality - as shown in the video, a customer need only hold up the box of the project in question, and then the Augmented Reality system will actually build the project on top of the box, complete with animations, if desired. The customer can then turn the box, to get a feeling for all the angles the final product would have. The customer gets a better appreciating for the project being considered & the store gets a more interactive & engaging shopping experience. Everyone comes out a winner! All thanks to the 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processors ( ark.intel.com ) and work ...

Augmented Reality Encyclopedia

Have you ever heard of the fascinating new technology called Augmented Reality? It allows you to add virtual 3D-content to your real environment - even more - to interact with this 3D-content in your personal space. My video shows an example where we superimposed 3d-content on a classical encyclopedia (a kind of a magic book) Augmented Reality will change to way we use information in the future. You can meet your friends while walking through the street, your virtual buddy walking next to you. You can shop online and try out your favorite products (eg furnitures) in your living room before buying them. Generally speaking Augmented Reality brings to together two worlds: The real world and the virtual world. This will allow to combine every kind of user related content with the personal world of the user. Please feel free to comment on the video or ask questions on the technology behind. UPDATE: 1 year later - thank you very much for all your inspiring feedback and comments. Today this technology is already in use for books and interactive advertisement tools. There is also a live-demo available. For trials please go to www.metaio.com or send us an email to info@metaio.com
