Great Planes: Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - Documentary

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances. The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord.[4] The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. Liberty Belle B-17 Emergency Landing Fire

The airplane is the B-17 Flying Fortress known as the "Liberty Belle." All seven people on board reportedly escaped and survived this event, without injury, but the aircraft appears to be a total loss. It made an emergency landing and burned in a cornfield at about 10 am, Monday morning, June 13, near Aurora Municipal Airport outside Chicago. The B-17 had departed from Aurora and soon after the pilot reported a fire on board. Several residents said they saw the plane flying low trailing smoke and flames prior to the emergency landing. The field was about five miles away from the airport. The "Liberty Belle" was once owned by the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. The Liberty Foundation of Florida acquired the aircraft in 1992and the aircraft had been flying since 2004. The B-17 was at Aurora to participate in a Salute to Veterans over the weekend.

2010 New Garden Airshow - B-17 Flying Fortress

B-17 Flying Fortress 2010New Garden Airshow New Garden Flying Field Toughkenamon, Pennsylvania Sunday June 13, 2010 IN THIS VIDEO, if you ever thought how a large aircraft like a B-17 can get out of the New Garden Flying Field, this video will show you. Take note of how wide the landing gear is on the bomber and how difficult it was to get the plane from where it was parked to the runway. I do apologize for the takeoff portion of the video, as I was shooting blindly because of the large barrage of Civil Air Patrol cadets at the crowd line by the end of the runway as well as the show aircraft blocking the view of the runway. I'm told the B-17 used all 3600 feet of runway JUST TO GET AIRBORNE! The B-17 did not fly on Saturday for reasons beyond my knowledge, and I was very happy to see it fly on Sunday. If you are interested in purchasing DVDs of specific aircraft and/or of airshows, interested in anything and everything related to airshows (where the jet teams will show up, all airshow performers, airshow reports from airshows I have attended, previews of airshows I will be attending, etc.), a much more easier to navigate "version" of all of my videos, and/or everything there is related to aviation - including spotting guides to my favorite airports and military bases and aircraft factfiles, please take the time to check out Steve's Airshow World at www.stevesairshow.com .

B-17 BOMBER--INSIDE AND OUT

-------Check out this site--- en.wikipedia.org While she was at Riverton Airport we got some nice pictures--many of these B-17's are crashed and still in Wyoming Mountains Probably the most unique accident in Graham County history occurred at 4:30 pm on February 2, 1943, when a B-17 bomber on a routine training flight from Casper, Wyoming, to Oklahoma City crashed and exploded in a pasture seven miles north and one mile east of Bogue. Though a standard crew of a B-17 was ten, it was later reported that there were eleven men aboard, all of whom were killed. Carl McKissen was an eyewitness to the crash. He saw the plane as it broke through the low overhanging clouds, saw it circle once, then watched it strike the ground in his father's pasture and explode. Lee M. Holmes, then sheriff of Graham County, who arrived soon after the crash, said the plane plowed a ditch five to six feet deep, ten feet wide, and around one hundred feet long. Wreckage was strewn over a fifteen to twenty acre area. The B-17 was perhaps the most famous of World War II aircraft, second in size only to the B-29. The wingspan of the Flying Fortress was 104 feet, with a length of 75 feet and a height of 19 feet. The gross weight of the B-17 was 65000 pounds. The fuel tanks held 2780 gallons. When the plane crashed, it still had half of its fuel aboard. Members of the local branch of the American Legion guarded the wreckage through the night of February 2-3, until Army Lt. Eaton and an emergency squad ...

B-17 Bomber Takeoff Training Film

In this video you can visualize how the first B-17 (model 299) crashed on takeoff in 1935. The rudder/elevator gust lock lever and tail wheel lock lever are located next to each other on the floor between the pilot and co-pilot seats. Both levers must be down for flight. When both levers are down the tail wheel is in the lock position and the rudder/elevator are in the unlock position. Unlike in this video, Model 299 did its fatal takeoff with the rudder/elevator gust lock lever up postion, locking the elevator in the down postion and the rudder in the neutral position. Once air borne, by the time the crew had realized the mistake, it was too late. A Boeing test pilot on board this flight as an advisor, lived long enough to tell investigators what went wrong. With this crash came the very first pilot's check list. Capt. Arthur Kennedy who plays the instructor in this video was a Broadway and Movie actor long before joining the Army Air Force.
