Missouri was one of the Iowa-class "fast battleship" designs planned in 1938 by the Preliminary Design Branch at the Bureau of Construction and Repair. She laid down at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on 6 January 1941, was launched on 29 January 1944 and commissioned on 11 June with Captain William Callaghan in command. The ship was the third of the Iowa class, but the fourth and final Iowa-class ship commissioned by the US Navy. The ship was christened at her launching by Mary Margaret Truman, daughter of Harry S. Truman, then a United States Senator from Missouri. Missouri's main battery consisted of nine 16 in (410 mm)/50 cal Mark 7 guns, which could fire 2700 lb (1200 kg) armor-piercing shells some 20 mi (32 km). Her secondary battery consisted of 20 5 in (130 mm)/38 cal guns in twin turrets, with a range of about 10 mi (16 km). With the advent of air power and the need to gain and maintain air superiority came a need to protect the growing fleet of allied aircraft carriers; to this end, Missouri was fitted with an array of Oerlikon 20 mm and Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns to defend allied carriers from enemy airstrikes. When reactivated in 1984 Missouri had her 20 mm and 40 mm AA guns removed, and was outfitted with Phalanx CIWS mounts for protection against enemy missiles and aircraft, and Armored Box Launchers and Quad Cell Launchers designed to fire Tomahawk missiles and Harpoon missiles, respectively.

Je to třetí loď třídy Iowa.Missouri byla poslední bitevní lodí postavenou v USA. Na její palubě byla 2. září 1945 podepsána kapitulace Japonska, která ukončila druhou světovou válku.Missouri byla objednána v roce 1940 a dokončena v červnu 1944. Během Války v Tichomoří ve druhé světové válce se účastnila bitev o Iwodžimu a Okinawu, kde odstřelovala japonské ostrovy. Byla také nasazena do bojů v Korejské válce od roku 1950 až 1950. V roce 1955 byla vyřazena do rezerv amerického námořnictva. V roce 1984 byla modernizována a zúčastnila se jako podpůrná loď Války v zálivu v lednu/únoru 1991.Missouri obdržela celkem 11 hvězd (vyznamenání) za službu ve druhé světové válce, v Koreji a ve válce v Zálivu. Vyřazena byla 31. března 1992, ale zůstala v registru amerického námořnictva až do ledna 1995, kdy byla vyškrtnuta ze seznamu. V roce 1998 se za přispění USS Missouri Memorial Association stala muzeem v Pearl Harboru na Havaji.

This short newsreel, produced for the home market, shows the final events of World War II, including the development and testing of the atomic bomb, the atomic bombing of Japan, the Japanese surrender, and the US occupation of the Japanese mainland including Honshu, and the arrival of the US Third Fleet in Tokyo Bay. The film not only includes the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay, the celebration in Manhattan's Times Square, and a parade in Red Square Moscow. Some of the people shown in the film include: Admiral William Halsey, Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, Stalin, Lt. Gen. Kawabe, Lt. Gen. RK Sutherland, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces Gen. The entire external hull of the ship was documented in January 2010 while in dry-dock by team headed by Smart GeoMetrics, a division of Smart Multimedia, Inc. for the USS Missouri Memorial Association. Three Leica laser scanners were used over a 4 day window between scaffolding being removed and the ship returning to the water.
