BMW i8 Concept -- emotional, dynamic and efficient. The BMW i8 Concept and the fascinating approach that underpins it embody the vision of a sustainable contemporary sports car brought to life. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept -- fitted over its front axle -- with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car. Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of under three litres per 100 kilometres (approx. 94 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Thanks to its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Added to which, the 2+2-seater offers enough space for four people, giving it a high level of everyday practicality. On December 2nd, BMW i and Dwell took the stage together at the 11th annual Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the most prestigious art events in the world.
Caught wearing sky-inspired blue and white camouflage - as opposed to the traditional black and white getup - the i8 prototype looks virtually identical to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept which debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite the similarities, the prototype has a repositioned third brake light and a revised rear fascia with an integrated diffuser. While the production model is slated to use a petrol engine, the VED concept featured a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel engine and two electric motors that produced 262 kW (356 PS / 351 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. This enabled the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), and averge 3.76 L/100 km (63 mpg US). More importantly, thanks to plug-in hybrid technology, the Vision EfficientDynamics could travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electricity alone. The BMW i8 is scheduled to be launched in 2013 and is rumored to cost approximately £150000 (€175285 / $242680).

The music for the new BMW i brand trailer was especially created by renowned Hollywood composer, Abel Korzeniowski. He became known for his music in Tom Ford's directing debut, "A Single Man", which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Already in the first BMW i brand trailer, the piece "Swimming" from that film can be heard. Korzeniowski's compositions have their own unique style. He creates a sophisticated blend of classical orchestral elements with electronic sounds and modern ambient music. "The whole concept BMW i really inspired me ... you get the impression of a new but familiar technology, not a classic invention concerns, but a very human technology. Just like the message 'Born Electric'." explains the composer Abel Korzeniowski. The exclusive BMW i composition for the new brand film was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London with a full orchestra.

BMW has officially announced the i sub-brand at the company's museum in Munich, Germany. Set to be launch in 2013, the i lineup will originally consist of the i3 (Mega City) and i8 (Vision EfficientDynamics). Details are limited, but both models will be built at the Leipzig plant and ride on the "LifeDrive architecture" which has an aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. Unlike MINI and Rolls-Royce, the new i models will retain the BMW logos - albeit with a blue ring around them. Furthermore, the vehicles will be distinguished by blue grille surrounds, aerodynamic side skirts, "stream flow" C-pillars, and "large but narrow" wheels. Besides the plug-in hybrid and pure-electric technology, BMW i will emphasize "a range of vehicle-independent services." As part of this process, the company has setup an American-based capital investment group called BMW i Ventures. It will primarily focus on smartphone applications such as the MyCity app which provides users with information on public transportation, parking availability, and local entertainment.
