Microsoft 2011 BUILD Developer Conference Steven Sinofsky Presentation Part 1

Go to www.technomicon.com for our full article on the BUILD conference. In this first part of Sinofsky's keynote at the BUILD conference, he presents an overview of Windows 8. Windows 8 features the new touch-enabled Metro interface, a dramatic departure from the traditional desktop user interface. Metro makes extensive use of dynamically updating tiles similar to Windows Phone 7, and is optimized for touch screens, although it can be used with a keyboard and mouse. MS is betting that touch screens will be universal for both desktop and mobile devices, in contrast with Apple. Windows 8 is something of a one-size-fits-all approach, in which all hardware platforms, desktop, laptop, and tablet, are required to support the full Win 8 OS, with built in support for the conventional Windows desktop. It remains to be seen whether this is really viable for ultra low power ARM devices, which don't have the computing power of even Intel Atoms. ARM development for Win 8 appears to be lagging, and most of the demos were run on Intel based systems.

Go to www.technomicon.com for our full article on the BUILD conference. Steven is joined by Antoine Leblond for a demonstration of application building using the new Visual Studio tools for Windows 8. Along with a new API architecture, Visual Studio allows developers to create apps using HTML 5 and javascript. Visual Studio also provides automatic compatibility with all platforms supported by Windows 8, Intel or ARM. This doesn't include Windows 7 Phone, however, but code is very portable since Win7P also supports app creation using HTML 5 and JavaScript.

This hardware includes desktops, all-in-ones, tablets, both Intel and ARM based. Win 8 ARM development appears to be lagging however, as most of the demonstrations were on Intel processors. Towards the end of the presentation, they announced the give-away of 5000 Samsung tablets to the developers, running Win8 developer preview and equiped with a full suite of developer tools. Once again, this tablet ran a second generation Intel Core i5 processor.

Microsoft 2011 Financial Analyst Meeting (FAM) Steve Ballmer Presentation Part 1

Go to www.technomicon.com for our full article on the FAM. First half hour of Ballmer's presentation at the FAM. This year's FAM, combined with the BUILD developer conference is mostly about Windows 8 and the slick new Metro touch-based interface. Metro is combined with a more traditional Windows desktop, allowing Win8 to work on both tablets and desktops, using Intel and ARM processors. Microsoft (and Ballmer) are betting that users will want touch everywhere, not just on tablets, and maybe they will. But just as Metro is on all Win 8 installations, so is the traditional Windows desktop capability (mouse and keyboard) and burdening low power ARM tablets with the capability to run the normal Windows desktop may not be a good idea. ARM development for Win8 seems to be lagging, and most of the demos were on Intel based machines.

Agile Connect 2011 - Keynote: Software Design in the 21st Century

www.agilejournal.com - Over the past decade or so we've seen important new ideas added to the mix of software design practices to help us produce better software. Design Patterns help us capture the design solutions and reveal a rationale for using them. Refactoring allows us to improve system design after the code is written. Agile methods—and in particular, Extreme Programming—provide highly iterative and evolutionary development methods that are particularly well suited to fast changing requirements and rapidly evolving hardware and technology environments. Martin Fowler—a leading voice in understanding, honing, practicing, and promoting these approaches—offers up a suite of short talks on his recent thinking about how these design practices have changed software development. Join Martin to explore what's new on the horizon to support the design and development of new, more complex, interconnected systems than the world has ever known.

Mii Prototype Development History [From NES to Wii] GCD 2007

www.unseen64.net "The development and history of the Mii avatar was a long and arduous process, taking about 20 years to reach fruition. Famed video game developer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed information regarding such a process during his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference in 2007. He stated that the current Mii design is based on traditional Japanese wooden dolls (known as "Kokeshi"), and also highlighted several stages of the Mii's development process. The idea first appeared for the Famicom Disk System, but confusion over how the idea could be a game halted development. The idea appeared again with the Nintendo 64DD, where the player could edit a 3D character with a wide variety of clothes. Again, however, the project was never furthered. With the release of the Nintendo GameCube the idea was incorporated into Stage Debut, an unreleased game which planned to make use of the e-Reader and a camera attachment, but this idea was also canceled, as those at Nintendo feared there was not really a game to make out of it. The build Miyamoto showed during his conference showed a virtual Miyamoto dancing with some Pikmin upon a stage. Around the time of the development of the Wii, a separate team at Nintendo were working on a friend registering software for the Nintendo DS. Within the software they were also developing a program where, in a manner similar to the Japanese puzzle game Fukuwarai, the player had to place the different parts of the face onto a drawing of <b>...</b>

Microsoft OS Cloud Windows Azure Data Center - Google and Amazon battle

www.cloudtweaks.com Microsoft has unveiled a cloud computing service, in which data and applications will not be stored on individuals' computers. The new platform, dubbed Windows Azure, was announced at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles. The platform was described by Microsoft's chief software architect Ray Ozzie as "Windows for the cloud". The framework will be offered alongside the next Windows release, Windows 7. The move sees Microsoft taking on established players like Google and Amazon in the rapidly growing business of online software. The aim is to allow developers to build new applications which will live on the internet, rather than on their own computers. Microsoft believes consumers will also want to store far more of their data - from letters to photos to videos - on the servers in its "cloud" of giant data centres around the world, so that it can be accessed anywhere, from any device. http
