Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It's a hard life..... In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. This is a great cook set for anyone looking for options in their camping cook set. a self contained 4 bowl (or 2 bowls/2 mugs) kit that will hold your stove. The 1.8 liter pot is very nice. One of the greatest budget ultralite backpacking mess kits is the walmart grease pot. These have been popular for about 10 years now. They stopped making them for a long time, but are back at it now. They are lightweight aluminum and hold 1.5 quarts of water. Very good item for backpackers and preppers. I keep several of these around the house to be used in bug out bags. At $6 a piece you can equip your whole family for a backpacking trip or any kind of disaster that may come your way. Great SHTF WROL item for prepping.

After a long day outdoors there's nothing like a good hot meal to replenish and refuel the body, mind, and spirit. And one of the best ways to prepare a great meal while camping is over the fire using a dutch oven. Of course it's laughable to imagine us hikers and backpackers hauling a cast iron monstrosity over the many miles of trail we generally travel. I wanted to share with you in this video my method for dutch oven cooking which utilizes the lightweight cook pots that most of us already carry as part of our backpacking gear. You can prepare virtually any meal that you would cook using a standard dutch oven and the list of recipes range from simple desserts to substantial meals. In this video I use a simple muffin recipe as an example, but using these same techniques I've baked everything from cornbread with chili to pepperoni pizza (mmmm). Hope you pick something up here that is useful, and I'd love to hear some of the things that you do on your own trips. As always, thanks for watching!

Yosemite hiking is a very personal experience! There is always a new trail to explore. But many hikers have a short stay in the park and like a quick day hike in the sierras. Hiking is king here!.They also like hikes without a backpack to slow them down. One of these hikes is to Mount Hoffmann. Mount Hoffmann is a peak in the center of Yosemite National Park. It rises above May Lake to a altitude of 10855 ft . Many hikers day hike the 6 miles, each way ( 12.6 miles round trip) from Hwy 120 .The mountain is named after the cartographer Charles F. Hoffmann, who was part of the California Geological Survey of the Sierra Nevada .He helped explore the Sierra Nevada of California, from 1860 through 1870, and 1873 through 1874 May Lake is a lake in Yosemite National Park high country There is also a High Sierra Camp where backpackers can stay in tent cabins located near the lake. I shot this for a friend who asked what I packed when I went backpacking. This was filmed after I came out of Glacier National Park, Montana in July of 2009 and should give you a pretty good idea of what and how I pack, focusing primarily on weight, volume and essential vs non-essential. I also talk briefly about the different types of gear that I bring. Backpackers can be a finicky bunch when it comes to weight and I'll be the first to admit that I tend to pack heavy (went it at 41lbs and came out at 37) but I'm a bigger guy and don't really have a problem lugging around the extra weight.
