Tampa's City Council wants Governor Rick Scott to pass an executive order banning concealed carry rights to coincide with protests at the Republican National Convention later this year. "The thousands of protesters expected at the Democratic and Republican national conventions can come armed with a lot more than signs and slogans: State law in Florida and North Carolina allows concealed weapons, including guns," reports the Sacramento Bee. "The Tampa City Council wants Scott to issue an executive order, preventing people with concealed weapons permits from carrying guns." The executive order is required because according to Florida law, local officials are prohibited from pre-empting state gun statutes. This move represents yet another effort to turn a right into a privilege and creates the pretext that fundamental liberties can be revoked by local bureaucrats when the mood takes them. We've seen a similar assault on free speech rights with protesters being forced to ask the authorities for permits to exercise rights already guaranteed under the First Amendment. Indeed, authorities in Tampa are already set to designate a "Clean Zone" where protesters are allowed to demonstrate. On December 21, Ramiro Diaz was arrested for selling eight cans of Four Loko to an undercover agent from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Diaz faces up to a year in jail for the offense, but just a few months ago Four Loko was perfectly legal. What happened? The drink had been the subject of many media reports which suggested that Four Loko's mixture of alcohol and caffeine causes young people to engage in risky behavior. The drink was even dubbed "Blackout in a Can," and the story soon moved from newsrooms to Congress, where officials like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanded that it be pulled from shelves. "We must protect children from the severe and deadly consequences of drinks like Four Loko," declared Schumer. The Food and Drug Administration agreed, and in November federal regulators banned Four Loko. The company promised to yank it from shelves by December and replace it with a decaffeinated version. So do drinks like Four Loko pose a unique danger to America's youth or is this episode more proof that that mixing media and politics can be hazardous to your freedom? As we documented last week, during a climate change conference in London which promoted the idea of forcibly imprisoning humans in ghetto prison cities for the good of the earth, Norgaard presented a paper in which she characterized doubts about anthropogenic climate change as both racist and a "sickness" for which individuals need to be "treated". The video, which can be viewed above via Blip.tv, contains a clip from Infowars Nightly News in which Alex Jones gives Professor Norgaard the coveted 'Skeksy Award', which is reserved for only the most ardent promoters of tyranny and authoritarianism. After Rush Limbaugh also directed scorn at Norgaard's work, the University of Oregon had to back down and claim the inclusion of the word "treated" in the press release describing Norgaard's paper was a mistake. More than 1000 people protested outside Dolce & Gabbana's elite Tsim Sha Tsui flagship, demanding an apology for alleged discrimination against locals banned from taking pictures of its storefront display. The Italian luxury fashion brand shut its doors before 3pm as the crowds gathered, and other shops nearby were also forced to shut. About 20 police stood on guard outside. The company issued a short, unsigned statement last night - without an apology - saying: "We wish to underline that our company has not taken part in any action aiming at offending the Hong Kong public." This came after camera-laden protesters descended on the store taking pictures and carrying placards denouncing the store's actions. Angry protesters chanted "Shame on you, D&G" and "Snapping pictures is our right. Banning is not your right" as passing motorists sounded horns. "Open the door. I have money and I want to do some shopping," said one protester, holding a fistful of hell banknotes. The protest was organized on Facebook, with the site drawing more than 15000 "likes" since Thursday.
