Barroso sees future growth in Greece

www.euronews.com The people of Greece can look forward to economic growth. How much weight do those words carry? Recent figures underlined some of the problems the country is facing. Just over 21 percent are jobless, twice the average number in the eurozone. Yet the President of the European Commission told MEPs in Strasbourg there is a way forward. "The Greek people have been accepting extremely difficult sacrifices and I think now, if there is a real commitment to implement all the programme, these sacrifices will be remunerated, creating conditions for growth and jobs in Greece," said José Manuel Barroso The message was clear. It was now Athens' turn to deliver on the deficit-trimming and economic reforms linked to the financial aid. For that to happen one MEP believes its politicians who must implement financial changes. "The two main political parties in Greece paid themselves 29 million euros of taxpayers' money to start the campaign on May 6. I find it a scandal, and that's my last word Mr President that Greek citizens have to make sacrifices that European partners have to continue to pay while most Greek politicians simply continue their bad practices of the past," opined Guy Verhofstadt MEP, Liberals and Democrats. The Greek election is being held in the first week of May. Faith in the EU is waning. In one poll 30 percent said they would not vote for any politician supporting the EU/IMF rescue package. Barroso warns Hungary it needs to comply with EU laws

The European Union will make sure that Hungary complies with all the bloc's laws, the head of the bloc's executive promised on Thursday. Hungary's conservative government is under fire for a series of new laws and constitutional amendments which critics say unduly concentrate powers on a range of matters - from finances to election law - with the administration. 'Some of that legislation may indeed by in violation of European laws and European principles,' European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in Copenhagen. 'So we will use all our power to make sure that Hungary complies with the principles and values and the rules of the European Union, and I am confident that we will achieve that,' he added. Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who hosted Barroso, and whose country hold the EU's rotating presidency, chose to remain silent on the Hungarian issue. On Wednesday, the commission postponed to next week its final response on whether Hungary's laws - notably one that seems to affect the independence of the central bank - breach EU norms. Euro zone leaders agreed in December to push forward by one year the launch of their permanent bailout fund, the 500 billion euro European Stability Mechanism (ESM), which is to replace the temporary 440 billion euro European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) in July 2012, rather than 2013. Presentation by His Excellency Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission

His Excellency Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, gives this presentation at The Australian National University on 6 September 2011. The world is experiencing a great rebalancing of power, mostly centred around the Asia-Pacific. However, the rise of this region does not mean the demise of Europe. The European Union is and will remain a global player, as the largest integrated economic area in the world, the biggest trading block, and a centre of research and technology for the future. President Barroso addressed the new approaches to external relations for the EU and its Member States demanded by these new realities, from the starting position that the EU sees Australia as a key global partner.

Barroso vows to present 'options' on euro bonds soon

The European Commission will present options soon for the introduction of euro area bonds, its president José Manuel Barroso said on Wednesday (14 September), urging a decisive move towards greater economic integration to drag the euro zone out of the debt crisis. An initial European Commission proposal to double the research budget to 100 billion euro for seven years has already been lowered to 80 billion. A member of the European Parliament, Maria Da Graça Carvalho, familiar with the negotiations, on Thursday told the Paradiso-FP7 conference that Germany has indicated it's willing to support a budget just below 80 billion for the seven-year period starting in 2014. That still would be a significant increase over the current seven-year budget of 50 billion euro which is ending in 2013. The current round of ICT research funding is known as FP7, or the Seventh Framework Programme. It's the type of research money that has helped for example develop the GSM mobile phone technology that now is in use globally. Also speaking in this report are: - Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Digital Agenda. - Catherine Trautman, Member of the European Parliament and Governor of the European Internet Foundation - Anna-Maria Darmanin, Vice-President of the European Economic and Social Committee - Ziga Turk, former minister for Growth in Slovenia - Zoran Stancic, Deputy Director-General, DG INFSO, European Commission.

Monti tells Barroso Italy is committed to deliver

Italy's Prime Minister, Mario Monti, on Tuesday reassured the EU that Italy is on the right track to achieve the commitments agreed during Euro Summit talks on 26th and 27th of October. After a meeting with president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, the Italian Premier said his new government can push ahead with bigger reforms than his predecessor. However, Monti also told journalists in his first visit to Brussels that his meeting with Barroso wasn't focused on weather Italy can achieve the economic reforms by 2013, but rather on potential institutional reforms in Europe as a whole. When asked about fiscal policies in Italy, Monti stated that all technical details will be discussed with Olli Rehn, European Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, on Friday in Rome. For his part, president Barroso expressed his full support to Monti's determination of tackling the Italian problems. "In these times of crisis and despite huge economic head-winds, Italy is determined to tackle its enormous challenges once and for all", Barroso said.
