Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 2 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate. The climate in Belgrade is a moderate continental one, with an average daytime temperature of 11.7oC. Belgrade is in the Central European Time (CET) zone (GMT+1 hour). Summer time (GMT+2 hours) lasts from the end of March until the end of October. The official currency is the dinar (RSD), but Euros can be exchanged freely. The Belgrade area code for domestic calls is 011 and for international calls ++381-11.

Existing for 8 years, it is the most successful group in the country and has become widely known on the international stages. The music is a unique blend combining the Byzantine past, through Eastern Orthodox church music, with a rich gamut of ethnic rhythms. The instruments played are typical for the area where the group comes from and dwells in, s uch as kaval (flute), gajda (bagpipe), and tapan (drum), but modern technology like computers, samplers, synthesizers, etc. is also used. ANASTASIA has made numerous music scores for movies, theater performances, and TV programs. Its last album, the original soundtrack for the movie "Before The Rain", bearing Polygram label, has been sold in thousands of copies worldwide. Ihr kleines Baby lässt sie auf dem Rücksitz des Fahrzeugs zurück. Der Taxifahrer Gavrilo, ein abgebrühter Bosnienflüchtling, der seit Jahren keinerlei emotionaler Bindung zu irgendeinem Menschen hatte, fühlt sich unerwartet für das Baby verantwortlich. Der Apothekerin Biljana wird durch die plötzliche Tat der jungen Frau schlagartig bewusst, dass sie ihren Freund gar nicht heiraten will. Kurzerhand steigt sie bei strömendem Regen aus dem Auto und läuft davon. Die Lehrerin Anica wird ebenfalls Augenzeugin der Tat und durchlebt augenblicklich noch einmal den schrecklichsten Tag ihres eigenen Lebens, wird aber auf der Stelle wieder aus ihrer Melancholie gerissen, als die völlig durchnässte Biljana einfach zu ihr ins Auto steigt. Mitten im Stau werden diese drei Menschen durch das Erlebnis auf schicksalhafte Weise miteinander verbunden ... Die Strecke Belgrad Sarajevo ist wieder in Betrieb. Seit dem Bosnienkrieg war sie für 18 Jahre unterbrochen. Jetzt soll sie verbinden, was der Krieg einst auseinanderriss. Belgrad - Sarajevo - das ist wohl die historisch wichtigste Verbindung auf dem Balkan. Entsprechend komfortabel war der Zug vor dem Krieg ausgestattet. Jetzt sieht er etwas zusammengewürfelt aus: Der Speisewagen ist serbisch, die beiden anderen Waggons stammen aus Bosnien.

The Beograd - Bar Line
A trip along one of the most fascinating railroad lines in Europe. Built only in the 1970s it connects Belgrade in Serbia with the Montenegrinian cities of Podgorica and Bar at the Adriatic coast. It already is very scenic at the Bosnian border with numerous tunnels and tall bridges, but as the border to Montenegro is crossed it gets downright spectacular. Sometimes you are that far above the valley ground, some people say you think you are flying. The whole trip culminates in the crossing of the tallest railroad bridge in the world (?), Mala Rijeka Bridge before the line descend towards the plains of Podgorica and Lake Shkoder. The last part of the video shows a visit to Mala Rijeka bridge on the next day.
