Beowulf - "Opening Lines"

One of Europe's greatest epics, the story of King Hrothgar, the monster Grendel and the hero Beowulf has been passed down in written form for hundreds of generations. In this remarkable one-man tour de force, Benjamin Bagby (co-founder and director of the Sequentia ensemble for medieval music), accompanying himself on an Anglo-Saxon harp, delivers this gripping tale — in the original Old English — as it could have been experienced more than 1000 years ago. Bagby has been performing the great epic Beowulf at major festivals and venues around the world since 1990. Now we have his remarkable performance on DVD, beautifully filmed by award-winning Swedish director Stellan Olsson. For more information, go to: www.britishdvdcollection.com www.kochvision.com

Beowulf & the Anglo-Saxons (Part 1)

Miraculously preserved over the centuries, its artistic importance was unrecognized until an essay by JRR Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings) revealed its unity and multi-dimensional structure. Beowulf is now regarded as the most important manuscript the Anglo-Saxons have handed down to us, of immense linguistic as well as poetic value. This program sets out to trace the origins of the tribes that brought this epic into being, the war-like Northmen from Sweden, Denmark and Germany who were to conquer and settle regions of a more clement and fertile island that would become known as England, named after the tribe of the Angles. Using 3-D animation, location footage, archive materials and interviews, the Beowulf epic is examined in the light of the civilization that created it. It investigates their religious beliefs as well as their everyday life, and suggests that, old as the poem is, it may have roots in an even more ancient fertility cult.

Hey Beowulf

For lyrics click (more) below: Hey Beowulf - written by Mickey, Jon, Barry, and Alex. Long, long ago on a stormy day just like this there lived a fabled and legendary man. Come closer, come closer to the light and listen to the story that I have to tell. No, child, do not be frightened by my leprosy. Come and bathe in tales of the past. SO! Our story begins with a gigantic and perilous beast that was indeed...that was indeed...a big monster. Please turn to page 25 lines 340-347. "We are retainers from Hygelac's band. Beowulf is my name. If your lord and master, the most renowned son of Halfdane, will hear me out and graciously allow me to greet him in person, I am ready and willing to report my errand." Hang in there Beowulf. Listen what I say-owulf. Times make look hard, but do it for Hrothgar. Hey Beowulf, no day but today-owulf. You put your life out on the line, then get drunk from all the wine...I mean mead. Hey Beowulf. A great demon had descended from Cain's clan, Grendel was his name. He thrashed about and killed many of King Hrothgar's soldiers. Though it would appear that Grendel was a yellow-belly, he slaughtered them in their sleep while they slept sleeping in their beds. Grendel dare not touch the king himself, though, for that throne was protected by God and God is wrathful...wrathful as sin. And this is indeed where our hero sets sail, quite literally, on the sea to aid the king in his plight. Beowulf was his name, Beowulf the Great...no actually just ...

The Ultimate Lego Beowulf

Before you ask, yes. This was for a school project. For those of you who don't know the story of Beowulf, here's a brief summary: The Danes are doing well, so the king (Hrothgar) builds a great hall to celebrate. Then a monster (Grendel) attacks it. Beowulf, a Geat, comes to save the Danes from danger and kills Grendel. Then Grendel's mother comes and kills one person. Beowulf follows her to her home (underwater, in a lake), and kills her. Then, Hrothgar dies. and Beowulf becomes king of the Danes. Then, a new dragon shows up and starts devouring peasants. Beowulf goes to fight him, but dies in the process.

BEOWULF: Hurdy-Gurdy & Theremin

This is a short excerpt from the 8th century epic tale of BEOWULF. The instrument I am using to accompany myself is called a hurdy-gurdy , a popular instrument of medieval Europe. The hurdy-gurdy in this video was made for me by Alden and Cali Hackmann of Olympic Musical Instruments in Indianola, Washington, and is a fully equipped electro-acoustic instrument with a built-in sound console. Hurdy-gurdy players, like bagpipe players, cannot control the volume of their instruments which makes it difficult to use for accompanying the human voice but the intensity and sheer volume of the instrument also made it ideal for great halls and public places in ancient times. One advantage that it has is that it is a complete instrument, able to play melody, harmony and rhythm. The hurdy-gurdy in this video is plugged into an RSP Technologies Intelliverb processor which I control with a MIDI Ground Control foot switch. The only other instrument used in this video is a Moog Ethervox theremin. The original Beowulf epic was written in Old English which is no longer spoken and cannot be understood by English speakers today. I used a modern adaptation of the words for this video. For anyone who is interested, I have posted the text to my website, along with some closeup photos of the hurdy-gurdy. You can also hear a stereo mp3 of the song just as it was performed, without the YouTube distortion. www.PeterPringle.com

Beowulf LEGO Edition

The English epic Beowulf animated with LEGOs starring my dwarf hamster, Alice 90, as the monster Grendel. If the former Miss Sulewski is showing this to her English classes, thank you! Took a few days of animation and video editing, but its worth it. My english class just read an abridged version of the story, so I decided to make my own version for extra credit. No animals were harmed in the making of this film, but several LEGO dudes were mutilated...

This is the first time 2 shoot it. I wanted to shoot my old toilet. I've put 245 grain to 700 grain bullets through it. It is accurate, it's hard to get three shots inside a dime, lolol I've tried. Can only get them inside a nickle.
