One of the first films to be filmed on location in Birkenau. The opening scene of the train approaching Birkenau is exactly the view we got when we marched with "March of the Living 2011" on May 2, 2011. Branko Lustig, the creator of the series, was one of the speakers this year, and, at 80 years old, he had his Bar Mitzvah in front of the block in Auschwitz where he was a prisoner. Survivors who have seen this scene say it was eerily close to how "selection" really worked at Birkenau. One flick of the thumb determined whether the person would be dead within the hour or live to see another day. The scene following this one shows the gas chambers and crematorium - this is a MUST SEE series (available on Netflix).

This gas chamber killed around half a million people in 1943-1944 reaching a peak during the deportation of people from Hungary in May - June 1944. More people were killed at this spot than anywhere else on the globe. Unfortunately as can be seen it is not protected against the elements although suggestions have been made to put a canopy or something similar over it. Gas chambers two and three were made in a mirror image of each other at the head of the rail line which was laid to bring people due to be murdered directly to the point of death. Previously they had been unloaded at a siding around 2.5km from here and brought to this point either on foot or in lorries. Prior to the construction of the gas chambers, people had been murdered in two houses located just outside the barbed wire fence called the red house and the white house. I have placed many films of the holocaust on this site including interviews with witnesses. Those interested should see also the films on Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor, Chelmno nad Ner and Majdanek. These camps are much less known that Auschwitz although they account for nearly twice as many Jewish deaths. Liberation of the camp complex in January 1945 by the advancing Russian forces. Only a few thousand remained too sick to join the many thousands that walked on a death march to Bergen-Belsen in Germany. They only remained because the skeleton SS staff did not have enough time to shoot them before the Russians arrived.

Auschwitz is universally recognized as the ultimate symbol of evil the worlds largest death factory. It is estimated that approximately 1.1 million people were murdered there, of whom a million were Jews. From a single camp in 1940, Auschwitz was transformed into a massive complex, including 3 main camps and 40 sub-camps. The establishment of the Auschwitz complex was a project that lasted years, and was never completed. In the course of the planning phase, SS draftsmen prepared hundreds of drawings and plans of the construction sites and the various buildings. Auschwitz Birkenau was the largest of the german concentration camps killing more than 1 million people here. Many groups of people were killed here but it was many Jews almost 90% of the deaths were that of Jews. The word Holocaust literally means "Completly Burnt" The Nazi germans were led by Adolf Hitler, the holocaust was from 1940 - 1945 and is one of the GREATEST known stories in history, what happened in Auschwitz will never be forgotten and haunts the world even today. Auschwitz Birkenau has now been made into a museum for people to visit and pay respect to the thousands that died there at the hands of the nazi germans. This video was made to remind people about the horrors and truth about what really happened to these people, the things these people had to do you will never believe. If you wernt gassed to death you were shot or made to work. Workers would have to carry out dead bodies from the gassing chamber and put there bodies into the furnace to be burnt, these jobs were not nice. There were some resistences durning the holocaust but not many escape attemts succeded, if you were caught in this act you would be shot. This video is also in memory of the millions of people who died duruing the Holocaust and that we will never forget what hitler and the Nazi's did to them. What can be said about Auschwitz and Birkenau that hasn't already been said? What can be photographed at those sacred places that haven't already been photographed? As I thought about what had occurred there I wondered how any human could do such inhumane things, and then I recalled "The Mysterious Stranger" by Mark Twain. In this story a young boy named Seppi is talking to Satan about a man who had brutally beaten his dog. Seppi declared that this man's actions were inhumane and Satan responded: "No, it wasn't Seppi; it was human - quite distinctly human." Satan goes on to point out that no other animal on the planet would treat another this way, except humans. I had not intended to photograph during my tour of the camps but after being there a few minutes, I felt compelled. With every step I wondered about the people whose feet had walked in exactly the same footsteps. I wondered if their spirits still lingered there today. And so I photographed ghosts.

"My Lodz No Longer Exists" - The story of Yosef Neuhaus This film chronicles the Jewish community in Lodz, Poland, through the story of Yosef Neuhaus. Yosef was born in Lodz in 1924, to Tova and Zvi Hirsch. In May 1940, he was forced to enter the Lodz ghetto along with his parents and younger sister Sofia, where they lived for four years until their deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau. All of Yosefs family members were murdered in the camp. Yosef survived and was imprisoned in several other camps. In 1946 he immigrated to pre-state Israel, fought in Israels wars including the War of Independence and started a new family. This touching film documents the major turning points in Yosefs story, his persistence in choosing life, and his contributions to the State of Israel. This is a photostory of my visit to The Auschwitz in Oswiecim, Poland in 2005. This was one of the main concentration camps used by Hitler for purpose of work camps, slavery, and the eventual attempted and failed extermination of the Jewish race, homosexuals, and people with disabilities. Among these millions of victims were several other beautiful souls from diverse backgrounds that gave or had their lives stolen in the events of WWII. The Auschwitz-Birkenau is probably the most well-known of all the concentration camps. A short bus ride from Krakow on a snowy,winter's morning in December 2004. A few of the older pictures are taken from various sources to show comparisons between "then" and "now." All obviously "new or current" photos were taken by myself. This may be graphic for some, PG-13 rating due to WWII photos of the atrocities that took place here.
