Carnival / Black Orpheus - Jazz piano

A much better quality video is at http:web.newsguy.com/dougmck along with a PDF file of the Transcription and the midi file (if you want to try to do this yourself!). I took a midi file I had created, IMPORTED it into 'Band in a Box' as a midi file. The notation and piano views were captured using a screen capture program. The leadsheet in this key is in the old Real Book Page 49 as 'Black Orpheus' With this I wanted to get that loose sort of latin feel, with the bass and drums playing more freely than the typical repeating 2 bar pattern on drums, or the constant and predictable root and 5th style on bass. Ifyou have a fast connection and want to see this in high quality video to see the notes clearly(and the audio in stereo), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.

PLAYLIST www.youtube.com Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro in Portuguese) is a 1959 film made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus. It is based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes, which is an adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, setting it in the modern context of Rio de Janeiro during the Carnaval. The film was an international co-production between production companies in Brazil, France and Italy.

Black Orpheus (ocarina)

By Luiz Bonfa. This is a bossa nova jazz standard, from the 1959 Brazilian film of the same name. I gather from a commenter that it's also known as "A Day in the Life of a Fool." That's the Mountain C hardwood inline ocarina that I'm playing, and the reverb setting is "medium room warm." The backing track is from jazzbacks.com, a great source for jazz standards, although many of their tracks are in keys that work better on sax. Mp3 at dl.dropbox.com

CASSANDRA WILSON Black Orpheus

Album " Loverly " , ( 2008 ) A day in the life of a fool A sad and a long lonely day I walk the avenue Hoping to run into The very sight of you coming my way. I stop just in front of our door But you're never there any more So back to my room And here in the gloom I cry tears of goodbye Til you come back to me That's the way it will be Everyday in the life of a fool
Black Orpheus (Manhã de Carnaval)

Alfredo came over with his congas, and we had a terrific jam session, plus he brought several CD's of Chucho Valdes, who is one of my favorite piano players. This tune is called Black Orpheus (in english), after the 1959 Brazilian movie by the same name. The song was a big part of the popularization of samba in the US in the early 60's, and has become a jazz standard. The recording of the piano and congas was done with a Rode VideoMic, which attaches to my camera. I added the bass and clave later. When I layered the video, there was a blank patch on the bottom left, so I added the cartoon to fill the space. I get a kick out of that cartoon.

Improvisation on "Black Orpheus" by Richard Metzger

This tune was composed by Luis Bonfa, second in bossa nova fame only to Antonio Carlos Jobim. The song was used as the title track of a movie by the same name, but is also known as "A Day in the Life of a Fool." "Black Orpheus"-jazz chord substitutions & Jam Track

This video features jazz chord substitutions and extensions played over the basic changes to "Black Orpheus" by Luis Bonfa(a lead sheet is included). I apologize to the jazz purists for getting Luis Bonfa's name wrong. I've also included chord diagrams for all the chords played in the video clips. There is a "Jam Track" played on a nylon-string guitar at the end of the video section. As a bonus there are scale diagrams from my "Guitar Visualizations" book. The audio from the video clips is straight from a Flip HD camera so the sound is a little thin but audible. This video is jam-packed with chord voicings and scales that should be useful to the aspiring jazz guitarist. There are downloadable pdf files of all the chord voicings from the video at - www.mickdennisguitar.com Also check out my video - Black Orpheus-Solo Guitar - available at www.youtube.com Website: www.mickdennisguitar.com

"Black Orpheus" AKA "Manhã de Carnaval" or "Day in the life a Fool" on Tenor Sax

Three alternate titles for one of the nicest tunes on the planet.... The theme from Black Orpheus or Orfeu Negro (two titles again!!), the great 1959 film set in Rio, Brazil. The tune was composed by Luiz Bonfa and Antonia Maria. Lots of subtone on the sax here, using my selmer reference 36 with an otto link HR7 mouthpiece.
