Tom Crean ~ Irish Seaman & Antarctic Explorer
Tom Crean was involved in three major British expeditions to the Antarctic in the early 1900's. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15. He took part in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904), the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) and the Endurance Expedition (1914-1917). He was awarded the Albert medal, 2nd Class for his bravery during the Terra Nova Expedition. He retired from the Navy in 1920. He returned to Annascaul and opened a small pub which he called 'The South Pole Inn'. After his retirement he never spoke about his Antarctic adventures. He died in 1938 at the age of 61.
