Brain injury recovery video

This video was made by my dad, Dr. Veteto. (This is an article copied from the November 2007 issue of Tulsa, Oklahoma magazine "Community Spirit") BEING THANKFUL Cody Veteto: Thankful For Life A 19 year-old Cody Veteto stood at the top of the ski lift, pulled out his cell phone and called his mom to tell her how much fun he was having. ''I'm standing on top of a mountain!'' he told her as he hung up. Minutes later, while snowboarding with a friend through a band of trees, Cody had an accident that could have, probably should have, taken his life. The Winter Park Ski Resort got him down off the mountain and he was airlifted to a Denver hospital. Cody's brain injury was so bad, Doctors were shocked to find out he was actually wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. They gave his father, Dr. Ken Veteto, a Tulsa Internal Medicine Doctor, a very gloomy prognosis. Cody's parents, family and friends gathered around him. Prayer teams immediately formed from churches in Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado, as well as from Abilene Christian University where Cody attended school. Against all odds and reason, the teams prayed with great expectation, planning for and believing in a full recovery. ''I'm sorry God, but having him back halfway is not enough. We ask that you bring him back better than before,'' was the heartfelt prayer of one friend. Two months of coma went by with only glimpses of hope. Doctors struggled to give him time to heal, pulling him through secondary dangers such ...

Brain Injury, Head Trauma, Personality Disorders

Certain medical conditions can activate the narcissistic defense mechanism. Chronic ailments are likely to lead to the emergence of narcissistic traits or a narcissistic personality style. Traumas (such as brain injuries) have been known to induce states of mind akin to full-blown personality disorders. Such "narcissism", though, is reversible and tends to be ameliorated or disappear altogether when the underlying medical problem does. Other disorders, like the Bipolar Disorder (mania-depression) are characterised by mood swings that are not brought about by external events (endogenous, not exogenous). But the narcissist's mood swings are strictly the results of external events (as he perceives and interprets them, of course). Mild Traumatic Brain Injury [5 of 20]: Effects of TBI - Biomechanics and Pathophysiology

Often called America's "silent epidemic," mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects 5.7 million individuals nationwide. Otherwise known as concussions, mTBIs comprise over 75% of traumatic brain injuries. Fortunately, most people recover completely and are fully functional within a few months. In about ten percent of cases, however, and especially where there has been repeated injury, symptoms can persist and profoundly alter the lives of the affected individuals and their families. Cognitive deficits, memory problems, emotional outbursts, impulsive and erratic behavior, sleep problems, headaches, and other issues can make mTBI much more than a "mild" condition. Compounding the problem is the alarming prevalence of misdiagnosis by physicians, which is due largely to the lack of a reliable physical test for mTBI (it often does not register on CATs, MRIs, etc.). This misdiagnosis results in improper treatments, wasted resources, and an untold amount of difficulty, doubt and confusion for the individual who has sustained the injury. This video series, which features expert interviews, informative graphics, and discussions with those affected by mTBI, is intended to educate physicians and other medical professionals, education administrators, coaches and other sports supervisors, disability and human resources departments, and, most importantly, individuals and their families who are adjusting to life with mTBI, about all aspects of the condition - from brain science to ...

A Blow to the Head: Understanding the Full Impact of Brain Injuries

According to URMC expert Dr. Jeffery Bazarian, the key to better treatments is more accurate diagnoses. We'll only be able to truly assess the effectiveness of candidate drugs, he says, if we can first paint a truer picture of who has a concussion, and to what extent their brains have been injured. You can learn more about two new research initiatives that Bazarian has recently undertaken by visiting www.urmc.rochester.edu (Have you or a loved one suffered from a sports-related concussion? Military families cope with traumatic brain injury at West Orange hospital

Its been three years since Scot Noss and Anthony Thompson suffered traumatic brain injuries while serving with the military overseas. Noss, 32-year-old US Army Ranger from Birmingham, Ala., was the worst injured survivor of a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in January 2007. A few months later, Thompson, a 28-year-old Navy medic from Houston, Texas, was serving with a Marine unit in Iraq when his post was blown up by a massive suicide truck bomb. Though they never met before their injuries, the mens lives are now forever entwined. Their wives, RyAnne Noss and Ivonne Thompson, met shortly after they were injured and formed a close bond. Theyve shared hotels and hospital rooms ever since as they navigate the strange and little understood world of traumatic brain injury. Their search for experimental and intensive therapies ultimately led them to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, one the leading research facilities for traumatic brain injury.
