"Samba is a Brazilian dance and musical genre originating in African roots. It is recognized around the world as a symbol of Brazil and the Brazilian Carnival. Considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions, the samba has become an icon of Brazilian national identity. The Bahian samba de roda (dance circle), which became a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity in 2005, is the main root of the samba carioca, the samba that is played and danced in Rio de Janeiro. The modern samba that emerged from the beginning of the century rate is basically 2/4 tempo and varied, with conscious use of the possibilities of chorus sung to the sound of palms and batucada rhythm, and which would add one or more parts, or offices of declamatory verses. Traditionally, the samba is played by strings (cavaquinho and various types of guitar) and various percussion instruments such as tamborim. By influence of American orchestras in vogue since the Second World War and the cultural impact of US music post-war, began to be used also as instruments trombones and trumpets, and the influence choro, flute and clarinet." This short feature film depicts Brazil and entertainers from the early 1940's. This is a one of several shorts that are spliced together on a 60 minute reel of film. This is one of ten I purchased at an estate sale for only 25 cents each a few months ago. One is a full length b/w motion picture. The others range from British war films, foreign dancers, American war related entertainment. I also have many other 16mm films containing close to 100 soundies, which are 3 minute movies of popular orchestras and singers. Soundies were made for scopitone jukeboxes in the 1940's that showed music videos instead of playing records, similar to the music videos we have today. They are several reels over an hour running time with 3 minute music videos. The flicker in the film is caused by the mismatched timing of the projector and the camcorder. This is not present when viewing the film directly from the projector.

FOR STEREO, click here: vimeo.com "Águas de Março" is a Brazilian song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim wrote both the English and Portuguese lyrics. The lyrics do not tell a story, but rather present a series of images that form a collage; nearly every line starts with "É..." ("[It] is..."). In both the Portuguese and English versions of the lyrics, "it" is a stick, a stone, a sliver of glass, a scratch, a cliff, a knot in the wood, a fish, a pin, the end of the road," and many other things, although some specific references to Brazilian culture (festa da cumeeira, garrafa de cana), flora (peroba do campo) and folklore (Matita Pereira) were intentionally omitted from the English version, perhaps with the goal of providing a more universal perspective. All these details swirling around the central metaphor of "the waters of March" can give the impression of the passing of daily life and its continual, inevitable progression towards death, just as the rains of March mark the end of a Brazilian summer. Both sets of lyrics speak of the water being "the promise of life," perhaps allowing for other, more life-affirming interpretations, and the English contains the additional phrases "the joy in your heart" and the "promise of spring," a seasonal reference that would be more relevant to most of the English-speaking world. The inspiration for "Águas de Março" comes from Rio de Janeiro's rainiest month. March is typically marked by sudden storms with heavy rains and strong ...

"Forró is a kind of Northeastern Brazilian dance that developed from European styles of folk music such as "Chula" and "Xotis" (term that originated the derivate "Xote"), as well as a word used to denote the different genres of music which accompanies the dance. Both are much in evidence during the annual Festa Junina (June Festival), a part of Brazilian traditional culture which celebrates some Catholic saints. The most celebrated day of the festival is known as São João." (Wikipedia)

Brazilian Soul Crew's (BSC) talented trio of Claudio Mansur, Edground and Alexandre Zee emerges to spread the vibe of quality music and its referential sub-genres of contemporary to vanguard, Brazilian, nu jazz, chill beats, r-grooves, Latin-Afro beats, deeply-jazzy and soulful house, all in the framework of their unique signature groove-laced harmonies. The seed of Brazilian Soul Crew roots bore fruit when Claudio, Edground and Zee met in Taubaté, a small historic city in the Paraíba valley, eighty miles North-East of São Paulo, Brazil. Edground, the Dj extradoinaire, and well read journalist who counts one of his blessings as ownership in world-respected Grooveland Music, a label exposing the soul of Brazil and its many intra-ethnic connections. Claudio "the radio show" man, did just that in the 90's, when his infectious live mixes were heard on three radio stations. Zee, the technical brain of the trio, stems from the world of drivers, patches, workarounds, software and glitches. His religiosity to details gives us the fresh, crisp and warm Brazilian flavors that embodies each of their productions. Since formalizing their relationship as a group, they have released original gems on Conya Records and Symple Soul. Delicious deserts in the form of remixes are audio delicacies on labels such as Soundmen On Wax, Abicah Soul and Seed, just to name a few. Creative soul-centered music is the forward-looking path this trio now travels a path that leads to the center stage of ...

Top Mundi is a show from MTV Brazil, hosted by VJ Didi, where the music video's rankings are voted by the viewers, through a poll on MTV's Brazil website. The network publishes a list with music videos from all over the world, escaping the usual Brazil-USA, seeking variety and presenting European, Asian, Latin American and others artists. The show has been receiving attention from the Asian music fans, and it has become customary to see famous artists from Japan and Korea on their weekly ranks. The last show broadcasted on May, reserved a pleasant surprise for the fans of the South Korean group, Big Bang, once their music video of "Love Song" received an expressive amount of votes from the netizens, getting the first place on the last 27th (reruns on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th of May). Besides that, VJ Didi spoke about the voting happening on the official page of Big Bang on Facebook, regarding a possible global event, and asked the viewers to 'like' Brazil, that way they could bring the group to Brazil. That shows that Brazil not only has a massive audience for the Asian music in general, but reaffirms the big numbers of Big Bang fans in Brazil. Source: www.mtv.com.br bigbangbrazil.com.br
