Ângela Maria: Babalú

Here is a song (from 1959) performed magnificently in the fashion of Yma Sumac by the great and beautiful Brazilian singer Ângela Maria. Born Abelim Maria da Cunha in 1928 in Conceição de Macabu, district of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ângela Maria is a lot more than a popular singer, she is a myth within the Brazilian popular music. She was a regular at talent shows before turning 20, performing under the name Ângela Maria so that her parents would not find out that she was pursuing a career in music. In 1948, she decided to go for it and moved in with her sister. After a brief period as a crooner in a nightclub, she began peforming on the radio. In 1952, a year after her debut album came out, her recording of "Não tenho você" became a best-seller. She was the most popular singer in Brazil in the 1950's, being regarded as the Radio Queen by her many fans. She specializes in samba-tunes, although she has recorded boleros, tangos and ballads. Ângela has recorded about 50 LPs, countless singles and 78s. From the 1960's on, she recorded less hit tracks. Ten years later, she returned to the spotlight with the beautiful "Tango para Teresa". Between 1978 and 1983, she recorded a more sophisticated repertoire and in 1981, she recorded with soul mate Cauby Peixoto for the first time. They matched so well as a duo that they put out the album "Ângela & Cauby" the next year. She released the album "Amigos" in 1996, selling more than 500 thousand copies. Belô Velloso - É D'Oxum

www.mhznetworks.org Show 2004 - Washington, DC - USA The New York Times - By Jon Pareles - January 29, 1999. "Um Segundo" (Velas, Brazilian import). This young Brazilian singer brings a warm, guileless voice to immaculately graceful pop. The album's dozen pop songs touch on Brazilian styles like bossa nova, forro and pagode samba, and bring a Brazilian subtlety to borrowings from reggae, salsa, funk and nuevo flamenco. The arrangements maintain a light touch while Ms. Velloso caresses the melodies, making the songs seem to come straight from the heart." The New York Times - By Jon Pareles - February 4, 1999. "Elis Regina, who died in 1982 of a drug overdose, was Brazil's Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Linda Ronstadt rolled into one. She discovered and encouraged the finest songwriters in Brazilian popular music, and she taught the next generations of singers the combination of lightness and sensuality, supple rhythms and melting emotion, that has shaped singers like Gal Costa, Marisa Monte and Belo Velloso." The New York Times - By Jon Pareles - October 14, 2004. "Belo Velloso, the niece of the Brazilian songwriter Caetano Veloso, has a supple, airy voice that can caress a melody even when it rides a swaggering sambareggae beat. Many of her songs were about the state where she grew up, Bahia, and as her voice paid tender tribute to landmarks and cultural legacies, she also danced and shimmied the samba, despite her high heels." ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM A Felicidade

Antonio Carlos Jobim and his ensemble interpret "A Felicidade." Jobim's place in the annals of popular music was secured by a single hit song, "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964), which he co-wrote with lyricist Vinícius de Moraes. Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, often known by the nickname Tom, was born in Rio de Janeiro on January 25, 1927. The film Orfeu Negro became an international success, and Jobim's score, featuring guitarist Luiz Bonfá, kicked off a new musical craze that quickly spread beyond Brazil. It was based in samba rhythms, but it featured subtle harmonic shadings drawn from jazz. The new style was given the name bossa nova, meaning "new wave," and the 1958 single "Chega de Saudade" (No More Blues), with music by Jobim, words by Moraes, and guitar by future Brazilian pop star João Gilberto, was the style's first major hit. Both "Chega de Saudade" and the flip side of the original single, Jobim's composition "Desafinado" (Out of Tune), have remained jazz standards. Jobim died suddenly of heart failure at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital on December 8, 1994. Jobim's body was returned to Brazil, he was buried in a tomb near that of Vinícius de Moraes, who had died in 1980. The pair had created two of the icons of twentieth-century culture, Black Orpheus and "The Girl from Ipanema," and the music that came from Jobim's pen lent the music of much of the centuries second half a distinct Brazilian tinge.

Lemon Tree (Peter, Paul & Mary cover)

Words and music: Will Holt (1960) The music of this song is based on the Brazilian popular song "Meu limao meu limoeiro". It's been covered by artists like Peter Paul & Mary, Trini López, Sandie Shaw, Roger Whittaker, etc. The Illustrations of this video come from the great artist Laurel Neustadter: laurelneustadter.blogspot.com Lyrics: When I was just a lad of ten, my father said to me, "Come here and take a lesson from the lovely lemon tree." "Don't put your faith in love, my boy", my father said to me, "I fear you'll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree." Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat. Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat. One day beneath the lemon tree, my love and I did lie A girl so sweet that when she smiled the stars rose in the sky. We passed that summer lost in love beneath the lemon tree the music of her laughter hid my father's words from me: Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat. Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat. One day she left without a word. She took away the sun. And in the dark she left behind, I knew what she had done. She'd left me for another, it's a common tale but true. Brazil Carnival Salvador 2011, View From Camarote Ondina!!!

The people from Bahia, are known in Brazil as those who most love parties. Almost every event is reason for a party, which should last as long as possible. Baianos do not deny this fame. The Brazilian carnival had strong influence from the Africans, All the samba schools in Rio must have a block composed only of baianas, women from Bahia. So, it is not a surprise that Salvador has one of the best carnivals in Brazil. According to Guinness, with 2000000 people (including 800000 tourists), Salvador has the largest street carnival in the WORLD. While in Rio most of the carnival happens in ball-rooms and in the Sambadrome (which require people to pay to participate), in Salvador most events happen in the streets and beaches, and are free for all. As a consequence, the carnival in Salvador goes on, non-stop, for nearly ten days. Small groups called "blocos" pop up everywhere in the city, and they are soon followed by locals and tourists. A tradition of the carnival in Salvador are the "trios eletricos" (electric trio). Back in 1950, two persons, Dodo and Osmar (who today are legends of Brazilian carnival), put high power speakers on top of a Ford 1929 and drove around town inviting people to follow the rythm; it was a massive success. In 1951, the electric duo was joined by Temistocles Aragao, and the first Trio Eletrico was formed. Ever since, several trios were formed in Bahia, with much more sound power, on top of much bigger trucks; to follow a trio eletrico, just join the ...

Dalva de Oliveira, brazilian tango, lencinho querido, el pañuelito, Francisco Canaro

Dalva de Oliveira (1917-1972) was a very popular and artistically influential singer of the brazilian radio days. A beautiful mulata with green-blue eyes and a nice soprano voice, she started to sing with her father, received education (sung in operettas) and later, for her career in popular music, received advice by Villa --Lobos, the composer who armoured the brazilian music. Marchinhas, choros, samba, samba-canção baião, bolero, tango composed her repertory. Her life was a popular issue and novel. Press and people used to call her the brazilian nightgale, the queen of the voice or the queen of the radio. In 1957 she recorded in Argentina a record with tangos in brazilian lyrics. Francisco Canaro and his flamboyant orquestra tipica (legends of the genre) accompany her. In this record we find ´´lencinho querido`` (cherished handkerdhief). A tango composed by Juan de Dios Filiberto in 1917. It was instrumental according to the habits but in 1920 Gabino Coria Peñaloza added the lyrics (insipid in my opinion). The same guys gave us Caminito. At that time El pañuelito (handkerchief in spanish) was quite popular. Though, it vanished from the repertory but it found another time of glory with the voice of Dalva who brings it to us today. The brazilian lyrics were invented by Maugeri Neto and have more punch than the argentinian. By the way, the first tango in south America was composed in Brazil in 1871. Argentinian friends remain calm: it used a rythme very close to the ...

Brasileirinho Trailer

Brasileirinho is a documentary about Choro, the first genuinely Brazilian urban music. It was back in the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro when Brazilian musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the melancholic interpretation of the Brazilian Indians music to create Choro. Choro is credited as being the first musical expression of Brazils melting pot and had a prominent place in the development of Brazils cultural identity. Choro remained a major popular music style until the 1920s, leading directly into Samba and later to Bossa Nova. After a slight decline in popularity, Choro music has made a remarkable comeback over the past few decades. The film remembers the history but shows, above all, a colourful picture of Choros vitality today. Buy the DVD: shop.dogwoof.com

don omar=lambada

original kaoma Lambada is a dance from South America(BRASIL) for couples. The dance became internationally popular in the 1990s, especially in Latin America and Caribbean countries. It has adopted aspects of dances such as forró, salsa, merengue, maxixe and the carimbó. Lambada is generally danced with arched legs, with the steps being from side to side, turning or even swaying, and in its original form never front to back, with a pronounced movement of the hips. At the time when the dance became popular, short skirts for women were in fashion and men wore long trousers, and the dance has become associated with such clothing, especially for women wearing short skirts that swirl up when the woman spins around, typically revealing 90s-style thong underwear. Origins Carimbó dance From the time that Brazil was a Portuguese colony, Carimbó was a common dance in the northern part of the country. Carimbó was a loose and very sensual dance which involved many spins by the female dancer, who typically wore a rounded skirt. The music was mainly to the beat of drums made of trunks of wood, thinned by fire. Carimbó involved only side to side movements and many spins and hip movement, and became the basis of the Lambada. The word Lambada After a while, a local radio station from Belém (Pará's capital city) started to call these new type of music "the strong-beated rhythm" and "the rhythms of Lambada" (lambada meaning "strong slap" or "hit" in Portuguese; cf. Antonio Carlos Jobim's - Desafinado (sing João Gilberto)

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (born January 25, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil December 8, 1994 in New York City), also called Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, arranger, singer, pianist and perhaps the greatest legend of bossa nova. Jobims compositions, many performed by João Gilberto, gave birth to the genre in the early 1960s. Jobims roots were planted firmly in the works of Pixinguinha, a legendary musician and composer who, in the 1930s, began the development of modern Brazilian music. He was also influenced by the music of French composer Claude Debussy and by jazz. Jobim found prominence when he teamed up with writer and poet Vinicius de Moraes in providing part of the music for the play Orfeu de Carnaval (1956), that later gained wide recognition in the film Black Orpheus. The lyrics for his most popular songs were written by de Moraes. American jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra prominently featured Jobims songs on their albums Ella Abraca Jobim (1981) and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967), respectively. Jobim is recognized the world over as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His first album, Sinfonia Do Rio De Janeiro, was recorded in 1954, with Billy Blanco. Jobim was buried in the Cemitério São João Batista in Rio de Janeiro. The International Airport of Rio de Janeiro is now named in his honor. Baden Powell - Manhã da Carnaval

"Manhã de Carnaval" ("Carnival's Morning"), is the title of the most popular song by Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Maria. It appeared in the 1959 Portuguese-language film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), by French director Marcel Camus and based on a play by Vinícius de Moraes. In the USA, the song is also known as "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Carnival", "Theme from Black Orpheus", or simply "Black Orpheus". In France, the song is also known as "La Chanson D'Orphée." Ivan Lins - Iluminados from Cantando Histórias [ HD | HQ Audio ]

Click 'watch in HD' for high definition video (720p). Ivan Lins, a major Brazilian songwriter, is a master of harmony with heartfelt songs. Many of his songs have been considered as Brazilian standards. He has become one of Brazil's most recorded composers whose albums are regularly nominated for both Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards. This song came from the album "Cantando Histórias", recorded live in Rio de Janeiro in 2004 to mark a thirty year partnership between Ivan Lins and one of his long-standing lyricists, Vitor Martins. This particular arrangement of the song Iluminados is the most elegant, moving and touching. Kindly listen to his subtle vocal, the depth of emotions, and sensible keyboard playing. Just beautiful. I presented the portuguese lyric, accompanied with the indonesian language lyric. Enjoy and be illuminated by this song. ILLUMINATED O, love that made things That despite God's doubts Already cured undeceived Already healed much wounds O, love that joins pieces As a heart breaks As if it's steel strength As if it's rock hard One that is so healed None says it's been pieced together It was thus made in me It was thus made in us This illuminated love One that is so healed None says it's been pieced together It was thus made in me It was thus made in us This illuminated love

RADAMES GNATTALI plays RADAMES GNATTALI Vaidosa (VERY RARE)

Radames Gnattali (1906-1988) was one of the most important brazilian composer. He criated a kind of music that seems to be Jazz, popular music, folcloric music. Maybe Gnattali was so important then Villa-Lobos and Camargo Guarnieri, Mignoni and others. He studied piano with Guilherme Fontainha but didn´t dedicated himself to a pianist career. I noticed that the canadian pianist HAMELIN use to play his works and apreciate his music. The most exquisit and sophisticated interpreter of him is the brazilian excellent pianist Fernanda Chaves Canaud. Because of his dedication to the ¨popular¨music too, he was discriminated and there are some people that asks if his works were Jazz or classical musics (the same hapenned with Gershwin)
