
In Kenya thousands were on hand for Olympic team trials over the weekend. In the popular 10000-meters, it was Moses Masai, Martin Irungu Mathathi, and Micah Kogo who rose to the occasion. They look to answer the challenge of an Ethiopian team that may include Haile Gebrselassie who decided against the marathon in pollution-choked Beijing. Meanwhile, steeplechase defending Olympic champion Ezekiel Kemboi placed first ahead of world champion, Brimin Kipruto, and African champion, Richard Mateelong. And now, in New York, for a sport of a different sort, as Nathan's Famous hotdog contest took place on Coney Island. In epic fashion, 6-time winner Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi from Japan came up just short in his bid to reclaim the title he lost to Joey "Jaws" Chestnut of San Jose, California. From the beginning the American held the lead, but was overtaken midway by Kobayashi at about 40 dogs downed. But by the ring of the ten minute bell, they were tied at fifty-nine, needing an "eat off" to crown Chestnut the winner by a single bite.
