READ THIS: Dick Cheney's deregulation agenda is the real (underlying) reason / cause behind the US oil spill by British Petroleum (BP) in 2010 off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Deregulation coupled with lax government oversight (lackies appointed by Dick Cheney at the helm) lead to the omission of key safety features and protocols, a free pass for drilling licenses, emphasis on profit over safety, and absolutely NO PLAN for containment of blowouts. In addition, the courts in the Gulf States, are completely stacked with Republican appointees (like Feldman) with major investments in or connections with BIG OIL (see last paragraph). Must read: www.nytimes.com For example, George W Bush and Dick Cheney helped block a 2002/03 Bill that would have required the use of acoustic switches as a means to activate the blowout preventer (BOP). Also, BP did not want to lose an oil well (by activating the BOP); this would have cost them future profit in addition to the costs for exploration and preparation of the well. This is most evident when you look at attempts in the first month and a half: all of the post-blowout efforts have been focused on SAVING the well; it was only after more than a month before BP attempted "TOPKILL", which would have sealed the well. Lastly, US District Judge Martin Feldman, who overturned the temporary drilling ban on June 22, owns investments in Ocean Energy (Houston-based), Quicksilver Resources, Prospect Energy, Peabody Energy <b>...</b>

As the full 2011 results were released, Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley said the year had seen returning operational momentum and strong cash flow generation and 2012 was expected to be a 'year of milestones'. 'BP is on the right path, working to grow value through the 10-point plan we laid out in October. Above all, we have a relentless focus on safety and risk management,' Dudley said. Company executives say it will take up to 24 hours before they know whether it's worked. The environmental disaster began more than six weeks ago, when a BP-operated offshore rig sunk following an explosion.

The US Government says it won't take over oil clean-up operations in the Gulf of Mexico from BP. Washington had criticised the oil giant for being too slow in its crisis management efforts. BP is pinning its hopes of stopping the gusher on yet another technique never tested 1500 metres underwater: a 'top kill' in which heavy mud and cement would be shot into the blown-out well to plug it up. At least 23 million litres of crude oil have spewed into the Gulf, according to a Coast Guard and BP, though some scientists say they believe the spill has already surpassed the 42 million litre 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska as the worst in US history.

BP is about to join the scramble for the tar sands. 'Beyond petroleum' has become 'back to black' as BP's plunge into the most destructive extraction project on Earth makes a mockery of its own PR greenwash. On Fossil Fools day, 2010, London Rising Tide and the London Tar Sands Network decided to help BP with a rebranding strategy to reflect their renewed commitment to environmental devastation and catastrophic climate change. Unfortunately, BP's UK head office didn't appreciate the delivery of the new 'back to black' marketing materials, although they kindly decided not to press charges over the 'criminal damage' caused by the protest.
