Top Gear: Britten V1000 Racing Motorcycle

Found this on an old VHS tape and thought it far too important not to share. I should mention that this was filmed before the loss of John Britten who sadly died from a form of skin cancer on the 5th September 1995 aged just 45 years old.

Benjamin Britten - Flower Songs, Op. 47

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Flower Songs, Op. 47 fo chorus I. To Daffodils (0:00) V. Ballade of Green Broom (1:33) IV. The Evening Primrose (3:44) III. Marsh Flowers (6:17) II. The Succession of Four Sweet Months (8:45) In the early part of 1951, Benjamin Britten composed a set of Five Flower Songs for unaccompanied chorus, in honor of Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst on the occasion of their 25h wedding anniversary. The Five Flower Songs were first performed at Dartington Hall on July 23, 1950, under the direction of Imogen Holst. Holst, the daughter of the famed English composer Gustav Holst, was a musical assistant to Britten from 1952 until 1964. This piece was composed during a busy time for Britten. He had begun working on his opera based on the Herman Melville novel Billy Budd in 1949, which was finished in late 1951. In addition, the well-known Spring Symphony (1949), a work for full chorus and orchestra, was composed while Britten was waiting on more of the libretto for Billy Budd to be completed. During the last months of 1949, Britten, along with tenor Peter Pears, embarked on a recital tour of North America. After this trip, Britten set about writing a number of smaller pieces to fulfill promises or to present to friends. Prior to Five Flower Songs, Britten composed Amo Ergo Sum, a wedding anthem written for the marriage of a publisher's daughter. Immediately after the Five Flower Songs came Lachrymae, for viola with piano accompaniment, composed in anticipation ...

Janine Jansen is internationally recognised as one of the great violinists and a truly exciting and versatile artist. Her London debut in November 2002, with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy, was quickly followed by invitations from some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony and Mahler Chamber orchestras, as well as the ...

Peter Pears & Benjamin Britten discuss "Die Winterreise" - 1968

Video footage of this great couple who brought so much understanding to everything they approached. Amazing ensemble... amazing love! This brief sampling from Schubert's great cycle "Winterreise", D. 911, includes "Frühlingstraum", "Im Dorfe", and "Der Leiermann". From 1968. Here is a link to many wonderful rare recordings and performances with Peter Pears: www.youtube.com XI. "Frühlingstraum" (Dream of Springtime) He dreams he is wandering through meadows full of flowers and bird-song in May: he heard the cock's crow and opened his eyes, but it was a raven calling in the cheerless darkness. Who could draw the flowers of ice he can see on the windows? He dreams again, of love, and a maiden's kiss, and the joy and bliss of love, but again the crowing wakes him and he sits up alone. He tries to sleep again: when will the leaves at the window be green - when will she hold him in her arms again? XVII. "Im Dorfe" (In the Village) People are asleep in the village and the dogs are barking. They dream of many things and have their rest. Let the dogs drive him away so that he does not rest with them - he is finished with all dreaming. XXIV. "Der Leiermann" (The Hurdy-Gurdy Man) At the end of the village he finds the old barefoot hurdy-gurdy man, winding away his tunes, but no one has given him a penny, or listens, and even the dogs growl at him. But he just carries on playing, and the poet thinks he will cast in his lot with him.

The all-male opera with a libretto co-written by EM Forster, is based on the battle between pure good and blind evil, and is set on a British man-'o-war ship. Michael Grandage, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, chose this work to make his long-awaited operatic debut. Sir Mark Elder returned to conduct the production, marking the 100th opera production in his illustrious career. Arvo Pärt (born 11 September 1935; Estonian pronunciation: [rvo pært]) is an Estonian Classical composer and one of the most prominent living composers of sacred music. Since the late 1970's, Pärt has worked in a Minimalist style that employs a self-made compositional technique called tintinnabuli. His music also finds its inspiration and influence from Gregorian Chant. Pärt was born in Paide, Järva County, Estonia. A prolonged struggle with Soviet officials led him to emigrate with his wife and their two sons in 1980. He lived first in Vienna, Austria, where he took Austrian citizenship, and then re-located to Berlin, Germany. He returned to Estonia around the turn of the 21st century and now lives in Tallinn. One Man's Dream: The Britten Bike Story

Motorcycle enthusiasts the world over have always talked of designing the ultimate "Super" bike. New Zealander John Britten did more than talk about it. He went ahead and built it -- at home and by hand! This is his amazing true story. From the backyard workshop to the screaming action of Daytona and the Isle of Mann, this fascinating video captures all the drama -- the dreams and the nightmares, the triumphs and the tragedies. It is the legend of the man from "Down Under " who dared to challenge the might and wisdom of the world's great motorcycle production factories and captured a nations imagination en route. And it is the tale of the revolutionary bike that confounded the critics and took the world by storm. The film has been remastered, and there is additional, never seen before footage included as special features on the disc. Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Op. 31: Prologue 0:01 Pastoral 1:25 Nocturne 5:07 Elegy 8:35 Written in 1943. ClassicalRecords is a Youtube channel where I upload some excellent performances from the LPs in my collection. I'm uploading these LPs because they are either not available on CD, out of print on CD, or just difficult to find. Pastoral The day's grown old; the fainting sun Has but a little way to run, And yet his steeds, with all his skill, Scarce lug the chariot down the hill. The shadows now so long do grow, That brambles like tall cedars show; Mole hills seem mountains, and the ant Appears a monstrous elephant. A very little, little flock Shades thrice the ground that it would stock; Whilst the small stripling following them Appears a mighty Polypheme. And now on benches all are sat, In the cool air to sit and chat, Till Phoebus, dipping in the west, Shall lead the world the way to rest. Charles Cotton (1630-1687) Nocturne The splendour falls on castle walls And snowy summits old in story: The long light shakes across the lakes, And the wild cataract leaps in glory: Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, Bugle blow; answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. Britten - War Requiem - Agnus Dei

Playlist of all four parts of War Requiem: www.youtube.com The War Requiem, Op. 66 is a large-scale, non-liturgical setting of the Requiem Mass composed by Benjamin Britten in 1962. Interspersed with the traditional Latin texts are pasted, collage-like, settings of Wilfred Owen poems. The work is scored for soprano, tenor and baritone soloists, chorus, boys' choir, organ, and two orchestras (a full orchestra and a chamber orchestra). The War Requiem was commissioned for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral on May 30, 1962 after the original fourteenth century structure was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid on the night of November 14, 1940. As a pacifist, Britten was inspired by the commission, which gave him complete freedom in choosing the type of music he would like to compose. He conceived of setting the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead interwoven with nine poems about war by the English poet Wilfred Owen. Owen, who was born in 1893, was serving as the commander of a rifle company when he was killed in action on 4 November 1918 during the crossing of the Sambre-Oise Canal in France, just one week before the Armistice. Although he was virtually unknown at the time of his death, he has subsequently come to be revered as one of the great war poets. en.wikipedia.org Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei (chorus) interspersed with "One ever hangs" (chorus; tenor solo) One ever hangs where shelled roads part.
