Buddy was born in Darlington, SC, later moved to New York and became a classically trained pianist, but in his heart it was all about blues. He toured Europe during WWII with the Cotton Club Revue and after this show was expelled from Nazi Germany, he returned to New York and formed his own nine-piece orchestra which would ultimately become the sensation of the Savoy Ballroom. Buddy used his sister, Ella, as his female vocalist (and later Arthur Prysock as a male vocalist), and they performed and recorded for most of the 1940's into the '50's even doing a concert at Carnegie Hall. The Buddy Johnson Orchestra truly defined the notion of "Stompin' at the Savoy". Buddy also was a noted songwriter, penning among others "Since I Fell For You" which his own orchestra recorded in 1945 with Ella doing the lead vocal. This song became a signature hit later for Lenny Welch in 1963. Don't even try to look up "obdacious" in the dictionary. You won't find it since it's not a word although it is thought to be the derivative for the more modern word "bodacious" which can mean "remarkable", "sexy", or even "voluptuous" depending on the context of its use. "It's Obdacious" is sung here as a duet by both Buddy and Ella with his orchestra backing them.
