Burma's Road to Reform

Burma's fast paced road to reform within the last year has stunned the world, and observers question the authenticity of its changes. The announcement of Hillary Clinton's visit to Burma is a welcoming gesture by the US, to Burma's latest actions of reform. Although the US has taken notice of Burma's growing changes, many other international leaders are pressing the Burmese government for real political reform- including the release of political prisoners in the country.

Flooding in Burma

Hundreds of people are thought to be dead or missing after severe flooding in central Burma. As floodwaters disperse the scale of the destruction in Burma's Magwe division is becoming clear. In Pakokku more than 1700 are still in temporary shelters, many have lost their homes, their livelihoods and their loved ones. In the early hours of October 20th flood waters surged into the area, uprooting trees and houses while many were still sleeping. Domestic news are quoting the official number of dead and missing at 215. But as bodies continue to be recovered some estimate the actual death toll could be far higher. And 3 days after floods hit, towns such as Kyaukse, home of Burma's former dictator Than Shwe, are still submerged. Those who have lost their homes and families in the flood say they didn't receive any warnings that the floods were coming One woman told DVB reporters that she had seen her family swept away by the flood waters right in front of her, and said they had not been warned floods were coming by authorities. While some have been able to salvage part of their homes, swamped by the sands, some monastries and homes have been swept away completely. And although some local charities have begun a rescue effort, collapsed bridges, destroyed roads and disrupted power lines are causing difficulties. This normally dry and sandy land, thrown into turmoil in the wake of the floods, is likely to take time to rebuild. With some too distraught to return to work, and many ...

CIA Archives: Buddhism in Burma - History, Politics and Culture

thefilmarchive.org Buddhism in Burma (also known as Myanmar) is predominantly of the Theravada tradition, practised by 89% of the country's population It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Adherents are most likely found among the dominant ethnic Bamar (or Burmans), Shan, Rakhine (Arakanese), Mon, Karen, and Chinese who are well integrated into Burmese society. Monks, collectively known as the Sangha, are venerated members of Burmese society. Among many ethnic groups in Myanmar, including the Bamar and Shan, Theravada Buddhism is practiced in conjunction with nat worship, which involves the placation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. With regard to "salvation" in the Buddhist sense, there are three primary paths in Burmese Buddhism: merit-making, vipassana (insight meditation), and the weizza path (an esoteric form of Buddhism that involves the occult). Merit-making is the most common path undertaken by Burmese Buddhists. This path involves the observance of the Five Precepts and accumulation of good merit through charity and good deeds (dana) in order to obtain a favorable rebirth. The vipassana path, which has gained ground since the early 1900s, is a form of insight meditation believed to lead to enlightenment. The third and least common route, the weizza path, is an esoteric system of occult practices (such as recitation of spells, samatha meditation ...

US Envoy visits Burma

New US envoy to Burma, Derek Mitchell has spoken positively of his visit to Burma, describing talks with government officials as beneficial. On Wednesday, in a press conference held at Rangoon airport at the end of his 5 day trip, he told journalists that: "I consider this a highly productive visit" This is Mitchell's first trip to Burma since he was newly appointed as the first US coordinator for policy on Burma last month. During his visit he met with several senior officials in Naypyidaw, including Foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin and Labour minister Aung Kyi. Although an audience with the country's president, Thein Sein was not on the itinerary, Mitchell still had an opportunity to raise concerns about human rights violations, with almost 2000 political prisoners currently detained in the country, he also highlighted the lack of transparency surrounding the government's relationship with North Korea. "As I suggested, we had very candid dialogue on the subject. There was no absolute commitment on anything. But we had a very productive on the subject. So, I don't think there's anything further that I can say," Earlier in his trip Mitchell also visited opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in Rangoon. Details of their meeting were not disclosed, but Michell revealed they had discussed American policy approaches. When asked about the future of her party, whether the country's reforms equated real change and on the release of political prisoners Suu Kyi responded ...

Ten more companies are owned under the group in Singapore by Law's wife, Cecilia Ng. The Myitsone Dam site is located just 2 miles below the confluence and about 24 miles away from Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State. The length of the dam is about 499 ft (152 m) and the height is about 499 ft, equivalent to the height of a 50-story building. The surface area of the reservoir is about 295.8 sq mi (766 sq km), about the size of New York City (301 sq mi). A maximum water depth of the reservoir will be about 950 ft (290 m), approximately the height of a 66-story building. Burma Stops Sino-Invested Myitsone Dam Project

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Burmese President Wu Dengsheng recently announced that construction of the Myitsone Hydroelectric Dam Project, jointly developed by Burma and China, would be suspended. China's Foreign Ministry responded on Oct. 1, claiming that the issue is being handled through ongoing negotiations. Burmese President Wu Dengsheng said in a statement that construction of the Myitsone hydropower project was against the will of the Myanmar people and will be suspended during his term of office. Wu said, "The government of Burma is democratically elected. We must care about the people's wishes, and are obligated to focus on solving people's fears and concerns." China's Foreign Ministry's initially responded by saying that they'll need to verify the news. However, 24 hours later, it claimed that the Myitsone hydropower station is a joint venture between the two countries, and as such, everything will be handled through negotiation. The US$3.6 billion Myitsone Dam is Burma's largest and most high-tech hydropower plant. The power station is located in Burma's northern mountains, along the Irrawaddy River, about 200 kms (124.27 miles) away from Tengchong County, in Yunnan Province, China. The dam is capable of generating of 600 million kilowatts of electricity. Burma Democratic Concern (BDCs) Demand China to Stop Building Irrawaddy Dams

Protest against China building mega-dams at the Burma's Ayeyarwaddy river confluence in front of the Chinese embassy China is pumping billion of dollars building the mega-dams on Ayeyarwaddy River. People of Burma oppose the building Chinese dams especially at the confluence of the rivers, Mayka and Malika. Burmese people argued that it will affect adverse affect on the lives of the people, Burma environment and future of Burma. The concerns over the Myitsone Dams started when people of Burma learnt that previous junta agreed building the dams at the heartlands of the Kachin's culture, heritage and religious beliefs. Ecological change to the Ayeyarwaddy would impact all those whose lives are linked to the great river, from the ethnic peoples in the northernmost state of our country to the rice-growing delta of Burma. If dams were finished, stored the water and produced the electricity, then the river's water flow will dramatically slowing down and water level will be low leading towards dying the river. At the upstream of the river especially in the dams water will be contaminated with chemical and water will be polluted which will threaten very seriously the very existence of the nation's biodiversity as well as environmental crisis. Ayeyarwaddy dolphins are the fresh water endangered species of its kind and they will be one of the very first species which could be extinct due to the negative impact of building dams at the confluence of the Ayeyarwaddy River.
