Ray Mears Bushcraft - Choosing and Using an Axe

This is a short, free excerpt from Ray Mears' website. This is a small example of the bonus features which come along with purchasing the Ray Mears Bushcraft Survival Series 2 DVD. The DVD can be purchased from Ray Mear's website, www.raymears.com , along with many other top-notch instructional videos. Apologies for the bad quality! It can be found in a much higher quality version on Ray Mears' website. Here, Ray shows three axes, all made by Gränsfors Bruks of Sweden. Smallest to largest, he shows the Wildlife Hatchet, the Small Forest Axe, then my personal choice, the Scandinavian Forest Axe. He then shows some techniques on how to use an Axe. I highly recommend all of Ray's DVD's. They all include Ray's thorough wilderness wisdom for numerous types of environments across the world. Many of the videos also include short stories / reenactments of people in real survival scenarios, where Ray points out what they did right, what they did wrong, and what they could have done. Great stuff.

Making a Feather Stick - Bushcraft Basics

Today we look at making a Feather Stick for fire lighting. Feather sticks help us in numerous ways; if your a little low on tinder making a feather-sticks allows you to turn what would otherwise be larger fuel into a tinder allowing you to start your fire. It's also a handy skill to know if it has been raining a lot and a lot of the dead wood is wet (on the outside) feathersticking allows you to access the dry inner wood and can provide the tinder, kindling & fuel to get your fire started. It is a skill worth practicing and can be enjoyable to do.

bushcraft skills: the swedish torch/stove - my way

a day out into the woods after some serious rain, presenting the swedish torch - my way: you don't need to cut and split big logs, and you can do it with your sak saw (although i preffer my fiskars). i cheated a bit, using a mini-bushbuddy burner (made from a tea candle) to light the torch.

Bushcraft Machete (10 of 13)

Machetes come in all shapes and sizes and can be very specialized tools. In the bush, where I have to clear trail, clear camp, harvest and shape natural materials, as well as prepare foods, cut water vines and clean game, (just to name a few) I like a machete that is a jack of all trades. By making a few simple modifications to the blade I get a variety of edge types located in the right places to optimize their usefulness and application to a wide range of tasks. This is what I call a "Bushcraft Machete". It is a machete that is not just the right choice for one task but rather a blade that finds it's way into just about everything I do in the bush. This video covers some of the uses and applications of the scandi edge I place at the base of my blade as well as the squared spine I use for making shavings. These various edges have wider application than what is shown in the video. If you would like to put some of these mods on your machete then feel free. I even have a tutorial up that shows you how with simple hand tools. Their application, or how you use them is up to you. If your machete is intended exclusively for clearing land or cutting trail then I recommend a full length convex. If your machete is much longer than 16 inches you will probably find using the scandi base awkward. For a bushcraft machete that will ride on your belt and touch on everything you do in the tropics this size blade with these mods has been working moe for many years. It just might work for ...
