www.TravelsWithSheila.com Very glad we had two days in Collioure, France. The weather never gets really cold along this area of the Meditteranean and the sun was shining. Many visitors on weekends, and we spent the day walking around the town, eating (how can a person resist all the wonderful food) and enjoying this vibrant town. We've been visiting France for 30 years and the majority of the French people have always been warm, hospitable and gone out of their way for two Americans who speak extremely poor French. An excellent day.

Almost in Spain, painters were attracted to this small town and proceeded to immortalize it in their paintings. Derain, Braque, Matisse and Picasso were just a few. We were here to walk from small town to town both in France and across the border into Spain. But first, two days spent exploring just Collioure.

The Royal Castle of Collioure - flyby jets - Patrouille de France
The Royal Castle of Collioure in France. In the Pyrénées-Orientales department of southern France, by the Spanish border, there is a gem. That is the lovely, quaint harbor town of Collioure and it's still in use, fortified royal castle! Legends have it that the Knights Templars brought back the Holy Grail, right to this very Château Royal de Collioure, as they call it in French. This is the Catalan region of France and rich with history, but the Templar legends that stem right from this place are many. To a large degree, they lead to Rennes le Chateau and the mystery Dan Brown so very publicly fictionalized in the novel, The Da Vinci Code. Check out the castle, it's fortified tunnels and we even see a fighter jet show all of a sudden break out! Like the French Blue Angels. They are called the Patrouille de France and put on an amazing airshow in the back-drop of this equally smashing Royal Castle of Collioure. Fascinating town Collioure in French Catalonia has a difference. Beautifil landscape, an old templiers's fortress with labyrinths, blue sea, colourfull houses and little shops make the town very attractive. But I couldn't see much tourists, what made Collioure very relaxed.
