40 years ago today, one of the greatest tragedies that our nation has faced occurred at Kent State in Ohio. I have committed half the video to pics of Kent State and half to pics of CSN&Y, the group that wrote this song. RIP for those that died. No copyright infringement intended.

I made this for a Global Insights music project '08-'09. Enjoy.

Wikipedia: Young wrote the lyrics to "Ohio" after seeing the photos of the incident in Life Magazine. On the evening that CSN&Y entered Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles, the song had already been rehearsed, and the quartet with their regular rhythm section recorded it live in just a few takes. During the same session they recorded the single's equally direct b-side, Stephen Stills's ode to the war's dead, "Find the Cost of Freedom." The record was mastered with the participation of the four principals, rush-released by Atlantic and heard on the radio with only a few weeks delay. (This was despite the group already having their hit song "Teach Your Children" on the charts at the time.) In his liner notes for the song on the Decade retrospective, Young reported that "David Crosby cried when we finished this take." Indeed, Crosby can be heard keening "Four, why? Why did they die?" and "How many more?" in the fade.

This is a montage of sorts of clips from the summer and fall of 1969 i believe. The fist set is from their home studio in Laurel Canyon California. The songs that they jam on here, in order, are Crosby's "Song With No Words", Stills' "Black Queen", "Find The Cost of Freedom", and Crosby's "Laughing". There are some interesting, and candid moments of humor and conflict. Stills' flipping out on a most likely high Crosby is especially funny, as he quotes Crosby's own lyrics about not giving in an inch to fear... The second part is from the Dick Cavett show the morning after Woodstock. Join Mitchell is in the green dress and she is surrounded by the Jefferson Airplane: Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Jack Casady, Jourma Kaukonen, Marty Balin, and Spencer Dryden. Then Stephen and David come in and talk a bit about woodstock, and it ends with Stephen playing 4+20.

"If you smile at me, I will understand, cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language"..this is definitely an anthem of an era for me..I make these videos to bring honour to a great classic and the artist...to spark a memory or even better introduce it to someone for the first time... The trio's first album, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, was released in May 1969 and was an immediate hit, spawning two Top 40 hit singles. Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are a folk rock supergroup made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by occasional fourth member Neil Young. They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on music and culture. With Graham Nash's 2010 induction as a member of the Hollies, all four members of CSNY have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, though Young's multiple inductions were for work not involving the group. Initially formed by the trio of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, the genesis of the group lies in two 1960s rock bands, The Byrds and The Hollies, and the demise of a third, Buffalo Springfield. Friction existed between David Crosby and his bandmates in the Byrds, and he was dismissed from the Byrds in the autumn of 1967.[1] By early 1968, Buffalo Springfield had also disintegrated over personal issues, and after aiding in putting ...

LYRICS: It's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore, and I am sorry. Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud, 'I am not lonely.' I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are, you make it hard. Remember what we've said, and done and felt about each other, oh babe, have mercy, mercy. Don't let the past, remind us of what we are not now - no way, I am not dreaming. I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are You make it hard (4x) Friday evening, Sunday in the afternoon, what have you got to lose? Tuesday morning, please be gone, I'm tired of you what have you got to lose? Can I tell it like it is, listen to me baby- it's my heart that's a suffering, it's a-dying and that's what I got to lose. Chestnut brown canary, ruby throated sparrow, sing a song, don't be long, thrill me to the marrow. Lacy, lilting lyric, losing love lamenting. Change my life, make it right, be my lady ( Scat )........................

Crosby, Stills Nash and Young came together in 1969 each of the members of this new harmony infused group had previous experiences in other popular bands, David Crosby had been kicked out of The Byrds Graham Nash had been ousted out of the Hollies for butting heads with Hollies lead singer Alan Clarke, Stephen Stills and Neil Young came from the dissolution of Buffalo Springfield. Out of all these breakups came one of the most potent supergroups of the early seventies who recorded one of the most anticipated sophmore albums of all time. The album called Dejavu is a strange mix of pschydelic sounds, catchy country rock , and ear shattering hard along with softer more melodic rock. The album also has a theme of optimism as well as a need for social revolution a notion that was prevalent in the latter half of the sixties and was carried over into the seventies by artist such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and of course the band whom I am referring to right now Crosby Stills Nash and Young. 1. Carry On- Melodic four part harmonies " carry" ( pardon the pun) this song about learning to cope with the hardships of life and learning to see past your self imposed prejudices of people and love everybody for who they are . The pschydelic guitar and bouncing rhythm section of this song make it an instant " Hippified" classic . 5/5. 2. Teach your Children- We have reached a shift my friends! I don't mean a shift in the message just a shift in the music. Teach your Children ...

HD and updated with additional photos from previously posted video, this song always reminds me of the country farmlands where I grew up. Most of these pictures I took in the Bear Lake and Cache Valleys of Idaho and Utah. Anyone who has been there, or that is from there will really appreciate the beauty of these wonderful places. BIG SUR Calif. 1969 A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Combs Sisters. Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival. The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude. Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day".

The concert was organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, spurred on by Bob Dylan's comments at Live Aid earlier in that year that he hoped some of the money would help American farmers in danger of losing their farms through mortgage debt.[1] The first concert was at University of Illinois' Memorial Stadium in Champaign on September 25 before a crowd of 80000 people. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, BB King, Roy Orbison, among others,[2] and raised over $9 million for America's family farmers.[3] Nelson and Mellencamp then brought family farmers before Congress to testify about the state of family farming in America. Congress subsequently passed the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 to help save family farms from foreclosure. Today, Farm Aid is an organization that works to increase awareness of the importance of family farms, and puts on an annual concert of country, blues and rock music with a variety of stars. "Teach Your Children" is a song by Graham Nash. Although it was written when Nash was a member of The Hollies, it was never recorded by that group, and first appeared on the album Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released in 1970. The recording features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. Released as a single, the song peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts that year. Nash, who is also a photographer and collector of photographs, has stated in an interview that the immediate inspiration for the song came from a famous photograph by Diane Arbus, "Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park." The image, which depicts a child with an angry expression holding the toy weapon, prompted Nash to reflect on the societal implications of messages given to children about war and other issues. In 1984, Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale used the song in a campaign commercial on arms control. In 1994, Crosby, Stills & Nash re ...

This song, originally released on the CSN box set in 1991, was slated to end up on the still-unreleased CSNY album Human Highway. 1. First Things First (Stills) (live recorded CSNY version) First Things First is a typical lighthearted Latin influenced Stephen Stills rocker (including some Spanish lyrics), almost bringing good old Buffalo Springfield back to memory. During performances of the song on the 1974 CSNY tour, Stills would switch from guitar to perform a virtuosic conga solo. This live recording is from the September 8 CSNY gig in Westbury. A studio version later showed up on 1975's Stills, featuring Crosby & Nash on vocals. 2. Carry Me (Crosby) (studio recorded CN version) In the midst of a prolific songwriting period, David Crosby premiered several new songs in acoustic renditions on the 1974 tour. One of them was the happy sparkling Carry Me. Despite the very lighthearted sound, it's a plaintive ballad referencing the death of Crosby's mother in 1973 and his relationship with Debbie Donovan. Carry Me ended up on the 1975 Crosby & Nash record Wind On The Water, featuring delightful acoustic guitar work from James Taylor. 3. Human Highway (Young) (studio recorded CSNY version) It has to be said that Neil Young was on a creative high during this period. He wrote and played more songs than anyone on the huge 1974 reunion tour. Among them was Human Highway, which Young, tired of waiting, eventually cut for 1978's Comes A Time in a countrified version.
